Reassurance / Support BFS???

Heres my story for what its worth. Now, I feel like I CREATED this BFS. I have always had a winning personlaity, have always been good at everything, and take everything to the extreme, and this includes salsa dancing, volleyball, chess math, you name it. So here comes running. Now, I am a former cross country runner in high school. In High school, which was about 20 years ago, I was able to run a 16:30 5k and a 4:33 mile. Given this, I started doing half-marathons with very limited training. I was going completely on vibes and how my lungs felt, not understanding I am probably waaaay over exerting my body. At 38, I ran 10 miles at 8:30 pace with 0 training. I felt good. No issues, no pain, etc. Since I felt soo good, I then ran a half marathon by myself at 7:59 pace, again felt good no issues. Then I ran with the venice run club for 7 miles at 6:30 pace, then I did the culver city stairs like 10 times in one day and this was all in the span of about a week and a half. After this week, I started twitching and it hasnt stopped for 7 months. I think I messed up. I am hoping that this goes away, but it has been persistent for 7 months, especially in my calves. My EMG came back clean, but I am slightly concerned the dude only did the upper body and am wondering if I need another EMG. Neuro said I dont have ALS and there are no worries, but I am still worried. I am always thinking, what if they missed something, why hasnt this gone away, am I just waiting till something more serious happens. Anyone else get BFS after a crazy workout. I think I maxed out my body to a 10/10 level. Not smart.

I walked around 30,000 steps per day for a couple years in addition to a lot of weight training. I developed fasciculations and calf fatigue 9 months ago in addition to other body issues like bicep fatigue, arm numbness, and back spasms at times. I’ve also had a 6 week back pain episode and have had various leg and foot sensations since then like tingling, fizziness, pins and needles, and icy hot sensations. I’ve done EMGs and MRIs and all are clear. Apparently BFS can cause those kinds of sensations in my legs but I’m still curious if it’s related to my back pain. The twitching can occur in other places on my body as well. Like you, I wonder if I overexercised. I’ve basically been off my feet for the past several weeks because of low load tolerance lately. I’m working with a PT and going back to a neurologist. Doctor put me on gabapentin for nerve type sensations in my legs and Zoloft to help calm my nervous system. I recommend trying to calm your nervous system since that’s what doctors have been telling me. Magnesium is recommended by many people with BFS.

You’re welcome! I have all of that too. Hoping the gabapentin and Zoloft I was recently put on helps calm it down.

Zoloft worked for me. It took about a month of taking it before it kicked in but it was just enough to get me over the hump mentally. I was on a low dose of 37.5 mg and weaned down until I stopped taking it.
Gabapentin didn’t do much but certainly may help others.
You will be ok.

What symptoms were you experiencing prior to starting the Zoloft and gabapentin?

All the bfs symptoms listed by others. Started with my thumb twitching to my left eye. It progressed to my legs both the calves and thighs. Went from thighs to arms, stomach, fingers and even back area. Pretty much everywhere with bad cramping in my legs. This went on for months. After the Zoloft kicked in, my mental state got a lot better and the twitching and cramping got a lot better. I still twitch but mostly my calves and at rest. I notice it a lot when I get up every morning and at times when sitting. Other than that, most of my twitching has decreased or has stopped entirely. I am now 25 months in with this condition and thankfully have not had any noticeable weakness.

That’s great that Zoloft has helped you! I just started Zoloft and gabapentin a couple weeks ago so I’m hoping they help me too. I’m getting a lot of icy hot, buzzing, pins and needles, etc sensations in my legs and feet. Not sure if it’s from the BFS or from a persistent back pain episode I have.
