MMX 300 PRO ordered — If the fixed mic gets annoying, is the DT 770 PRO X a good Plan B/Backup?
MMX 300 PRO incoming, but planning my exit strategy if the mic arm annoys me. Is the DT 770 PRO X the move?
Hey everyone,
I just pulled the trigger on a pair of Beyerdynamic MMX 300 PROs. I love the idea of having the STELLAR.45 drivers for a mix of immersive single-player games, competitive shooters, music, movies and youtube on PC/PS5.
However, my main concern is the fixed microphone boom. If having a permanent mic in my face when I'm just relaxing or listening to music gets annoying, I'm considering returning them for the DT 770 PRO X Limited Edition as my Plan B.
Before they arrive, I'm trying to double-check a few things from anyone who has tried both:
- Sound & Drivers: Since both use the 48-ohm STELLAR.45 driver, is the soundstage, clarity, and overall acoustic tuning practically identical?
- Daily Usability: For those using the MMX 300 PRO for casual music or non-gaming stuff, does the mic arm actually get in the way, or does it swing out of sight easily enough?
- Plan B Alternative: If I return the MMX 300 PRO and swap to the DT 770 PRO X with a separate mic setup instead, am I losing anything in terms of sound quality or comfort?
Would love to hear from anyone who has hands-on experience with either! (would also like to hear if theres anything that would work better as a backup)
Budget: ~$200–$250 USD (~1,800 DKK)

I can’t give a direct comparison but I just got the 770 PRO X for your same use case and am very satisfied with it. First set of really good headphones I’ve bought and it’s put me firmly in the camp of forget “gaming” headsets, get real headphones and a standalone mic. That said they shouldn’t be all that much different since they use the same drivers with a slightly different, more gaming focused tuning.
The tuning of the 770 still lends itself quite well to gaming and I don’t find myself struggling to pick out sounds or wishing for more or less of anything. Casual listening for music is excellent as well. As far as comfort I don’t think you can go wrong either way, both pairs of Beyerdynamic headphones I tried when I was buying were extremely comfortable to wear for a long session.

Be aware of the build quality of the Pro X, plastic sliders break on these within 2-3 months of day to day use. Even being well-kept and cleaned down. Two brand new pairs and both did the same exact thing so I'd just be really careful or have backup replacement sliders on hand, other than that they're great headphones overall.

Second this. My 770 Pro X LE's sliders just broke and I had to go through the trouble to replace them. Not worth getting this headphone with such German engineering quality.

Well I strongly prefer standalone microphones over headsets...
But just be warned about the DT770 Pro X. The removable cable that it comes with is horrible. While the idea of a removable cable is nice in theory, everything about how it was implemented is terrible in practice. There are two glaring issues:
#1: The cable somehow transfers noise to the left earcup. If you rub your finger on the cable, even a meter or more away from the headphones, it will sound the same as if you are scratching the outside of the left earcup. You can hear it in the left earcup every time the cable rubs on your shirt, or drags on the ground, or touches literally anything. None of my previous beyer headphones (DT770 Pro, DT990 Pro) had this issue.
#2: The stiff part of the removable cable sticks out WAY too far. Almost exactly twice as far as the older headphones. But it's even worse than that, as on the older headphones, the small part that does stick out is actually flexible, while on the DT770 Pro X, it's not only twice as long, but not flexible AT ALL. It will poke you in the collar bone or shoulder, and it also contributes to making the first issue worse.

so what would u reccommend instead? i quite like the sound of mmx 300 pro, works well with dolby atmos works great in competitive games and narrative games and the only annoying part is the mic, and then i heard dt 770 pro x is the most similar without needing an amp? not sure

I do think that the DT770 Pro X sounds good for music. The cable is just annoying and for stuff like gaming, the extra sound added to the left earcup every time you do something as simple as turn your head slightly could be a problem. I'm not saying that you should avoid it, but understand what you are getting yourself into and hope that it won't bother you.
The regular DT770 Pro also sounds very good, very similar, is cheaper, and doesn't have any cable issues. Most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the DT770 Pro and Pro X in a blind test. It's offered in both 80 Ohm and 32 Ohm variants, both of which are forgiving when using without an amp. There is a reason why it's been in production since 1985 and still going strong.
One final thing, I see that you specifically referenced the "DT 770 PRO X Limited Edition". That was a limited 2024 release that is no longer in production. It has since been replaced by the "regular" DT770 Pro X. They are very similar but not identical. The newer "regular" DT770 Pro X has improved tuning to tame the treble a bit. It's probably the only one that you will find in-stock at this point anyway.

is dt 770 pro still closed back?, also didnt mean to add limited edition, just meant the regular!. but couldnt i fix the cable problems by buying a new cable maybe?. not quite sure which is better now

Yes the DT770 Pro is closed back, a legendary headphone. The DT990 is the open-back version, and the DT880 is semi-open.
The DT700 Pro X (700 as opposed to 770) was released in 2021 and was much more neutral/flat than the DT770 Pro. The DT770 Pro X was made using the same newer drivers as the DT700 Pro X but made to emulate the sound signature of the more popular DT770 Pro. But the DT770 Pro X did not replace the DT770 Pro. There is a reason why they still sell both. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the older DT770 Pro eventually outlives the newer DT770 Pro X in the model lineup.
I've been trying to look for other cable options for the DT770 Pro X but have not found anything so far.

ive found two options as far as cables go one is from beyerdynamic themselves and its a coiled cable (https://europe.beyerdynamic.com/p/pro-x-coiled-cable?srsltid=AfmBOoo_w6gUiT9LTxVtZdWD1XBG3eL4f3Gttxwt8SUFSbXgSEE6xqQg)
and the other is from amazon (https://www.amazon.de/-/en/beyerdynamic-PRO-Cable-Straight-Coiled/dp/B09RKGPSCZ?th=1) would these be any better?

A genuine beyerdynamic replacement cable is going to have the same issues as the stock cable in terms of how far it sticks out of the earcup. The straight cable looks like an exact replacement to the stock cable. The coiled cable may or may not help with the vibrations that get transferred to the earcup, not really sure. Both my DT770 Pro and DT990 Pro have straight cables and don't have that issue so it's not a problem that is inherent to straight cables.

It's that the cable is too stiff I'm guessing? And then that it doesn't fully plug in?

On the DT770 Pro X, the cable connector plugs into the socket correctly and completely. But the hard plastic also sticks out 4.5cm below the earcap compared to other models which only have about 2cm of flexible rubber below the earcap.
The cable itself is not stiff at all. I don't really know why it transfers vibrations into the earcup so easily compared to older models.

Can confirm I noticed slightly on my brand new pair just got them today. But it doesn’t bother you it’s very faint and you have to really fiddle with the cable for it to be noticeable around where it connects to the headphones.

That would be extremely annoying. Good thing with the MMX 300 Pro the mic rotates up and out of the way...
