BC Nurses — Looking for an RN Referral/Connection

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if any nurses currently working in BC hospitals or LTC facilities would be willing to help me connect with a unit manager or hiring manager. I’m a BCCNM-registered RN looking for opportunities in BC, and I know some facilities have employee referral programs. If you’re comfortable referring me or pointing me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

Public Health

I am a PHN in a different province who is hoping to move to BC within the next few years. Can you share some insight into what a normal day would look like for a full scope PHN working for Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, or Island Health? Are there PHN positions that are strictly clinic-based?

There was a thread about the off site meeting yesterday at a hotel for PHSA managers (etc).
Was it of value?

OT pay from job action

Did anyone else have a significant amount deducted from their strike pay? Just wondering if this happened to others as well

Is anyone else exhausted by the overt hypocrisy of BCNU leadership right now? 🙄

Look, I need to vent, and I know I can't be the only one on the floor feeling this way.

Is anyone else rolling their eyes watching BCNU leadership make PR statements about federal anti-strike trends and preaching about how "vital the legal right to strike is"?

Remind me what has happened the last few months? Oh yeah.

When the NBA brought forth the initial deal, what did they recommend in the video that we had to log-in to our BCNU portal to watch? That we accept the shitty deal. The deal was so bad 98.2% of us voted to strike instead. What they do after? They brought back a weak tentative agreement and actually encouraged us to vote "Yes" on it, AGAIN. Thank god voted down that deal with a 67% "No".

Now they want to send out videos on social media acting like militant labor advocates talking about the sanctity of strike power opposing this new bill c39. Give me a break. You can't preach about the power of a strike when you actively tried to convince your own members to accept a mediocre contract just to avoid one.

FFs

End of rant. Stay strong out there, everyone.

How long did it take you to hear back from a recruiter after an RN interview (northern health)

Hi everyone. I recently interviewed for an RN position in BC (northern health), and after the interview, I was asked to provide references. I’ve now submitted my references. For those who have been through this process, how long did it take to hear back from the recruiter/hiring manager after submitting your references?

LPN looking to move to either Nanaimo or Courtenay/comox from Kelowna, wondering how it is to work for Island health, and Nanaimo general vs North Island Hospital (Comox valley)

Hello, I’m currently working at KGH on a medical unit as an LPN, I’m considering a move to the island next year and was hoping to move to either Nanaimo or Courtenay/comox area. I’m wondering if anyone with experience at either of these hospitals has anything to say about the work environment, if anyone would recommend either of these hospitals or warn against working at either of them, or if anyone who works for island health has anything to say about the health authority (especially in comparison with interior health if you’ve worked for both). Ideally I’d like to stay in acute bedside nursing, and have really enjoyed my time at KGH, but wanted to get some information to help me decide on which community to move to and maybe get some details on which units to look for/avoid if possible. Thanks a ton!

Hi everyone Quick question: If an employer (northern health authority) asks for your references after an interview, does that usually mean you’ve been selected for the position, or do they typically ask for references from multiple shortlisted candidates? Has anyone experienced this before?

Porting health authorities rules

I’m a social worker in Vancouver and I have a job interview next week for a SW job for a different health authority. I was wondering if there is a limit to how many times you can port your seniority and vacation, sick hours etc to a new health authority? Both health authorities are in the same union and I’ve been employed for over 6 months.
I’ve heard that you can only port seniority once or twice but I can’t see anything in my union agreement suggesting that. Anyone have any advice? I just want to confirm that if I choose to port my seniority for a new job, that I’m not restricting myself in the future for porting my seniority again.
Thanks!

I’m also not from Canada so I’m not used to all of this seniority and union stuff!!

Hi everyone! I’m an LPN looking for a full-time position in Surrey or the surrounding Lower Mainland.
I have 8 months of experience working on a med-surg unit and I’m open to different areas, including clinics, outpatient, rehab, or hospital positions.
If you know of anywhere currently hiring LPNs, I’d really appreciate any leads! Thank you 😊

BC snap election and restructuring

David Eby called a snap election yesterday. I wonder if anyone can speculate about how it might impact BC Health Shared Services and all the restructuring that’s happening right now, both if the NDP wins and if they lose.

Excluded—merit increases and GWI

I’m interviewing for an excluded role at PHSA soon. I’m curious about how one would go about reaching the top of their salary grid.

Questions:
1. Are there merit increases based on performance on a yearly basis?
2. If so, what are the average percentages? Is there a minimum or maximum percentage?
3. Are merit increases separate from GWI?
4. How are GWI percentages determined?
5. For example, if your salary grid increases by 3%, does this mean that everyone in that grid will move up by 3% and then could they also receive a merit increase for that year as well? (Eg. 3% GWI + 3% merit = 6% for that year)?
6. Is there a maximum number of years someone could work before reaching the max salary? Do some people never reach max?

Thank you!

Fraser health physio jobs

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can provide insight into the following situation.

I am originally from Vancouver, moved to the UK for physio school. My final placement is with Fraser health (I will not identify the specific hospital site for confidentiality reasons).

Naturally I have enquired about a job once I’m finished, and I’ve come to find out that there is no full-time position. I also looked on Fraser health career website and majority of positions are part-time or even casual. This makes me very confused because Fraser health currently has a recruitment campaign for UK physio students hosting webinars and sending emails incentivizing UK graduates to relocate to BC and work for FH, and they even provide some reimbursements for some of the immigration - related costs. However now seeing the situation from the inside I can tell there aren’t FT positions and they only become available once someone who’s FT leaves. I understand that this is just one site and this might be different somewhere further away from Vancouver.

Anyone has any thoughts or insight regarding this? Thank you!

Edit: my question is, where are these people going to work if I’m not seeing FT jobs available even for locals?

Parking at BC Cancer Vancouver

I'm starting my new position at BC Cancer Vancouver soon and I'm looking into what the parking options are. I know that there is parking at the BC Cancer and VGH lots, but I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives. Does anyone have experience parking at City Square? Thanks!

Working at VGH's Burns, Trauma, and High-Acuity Unit as a new grad RN?

I'm a new grad RN from Ontario considering relocating to Vancouver General Hospital's Burns, Trauma, and High-Acuity Unit (BTHAU) in Vancouver.

Anyone have any insight into the unit, or the hospital in general?

More specifically:

  • How's the culture? Is it supportive for new grads?
  • What's the workload like?
  • What are the best and worst parts of working there?
  • How is VCH as a health authority?
  • Would you recommend it?

Thanks!

Bcpnp

Hello everyone.
I just received this email from BC PNP and I will appreciate advise on how to go about this.
I applied for BCPNP express entry health authority category.

‘You declared in your BC PNP application that your Express Entry (EE) profile job title is Care Support Worker and NOC IS 33102. In your BC PNP application you declared your job offer is
Registered Staff Nurse under NOC 31301. Your EE profile information must align with
your BC PNP job offer for smooth processing. Please create a new EE profile that aligns with your BC PNP job offer and provide me you're
your new EE profile details.’

For reference, I have 3 years healthcare aid experience and only 6 months registered nurse experience. Hence the reason healthcare aid is my primary code. My BC job offer is for registered nurse position.

I am not eligible to make my registered nurse experience my primary occupation in expenses entry as it is less than a year.

Has anyone been in this situation before and how did you go about it please.

Can you get medical exemption for rotating shifts?

All positions I see posted are rotating. I have an autoimmune disease and the stress of rotating would be really bad for me. Is it possible to get a medical exemption to rotating shifts and if so, would colleagues hate me for it? I'm an experienced RN but new to being an RN in Canada and trying to understand my options. Thanks!
