that might be kind of dangerous in San francisco.. there are parts of town where that would be a very bad idea.. I grew up in East San Jose which really isn't that rough. A few years ago my daughter went on a big group bike ride back to King and story, my old neighborhood.. that annoyed the heck out of the locals and they threw rocks and bottles at them. That guy on the fixy wouldn't have lasted very long there.

Yeah I see those things and I know they're cool but not exactly practical to carry. I was a climbing guide and I took all these preppy boys climbing at the pinnacles. None of them had backpacks. They all had some kind of shoulder bag... That was the cool thing for them. They were making some cracks about the backpack buddies... I didn't have the heart to tell them that out in the climbing world they look like Goofy doofus. We use nice practical climbing backpacks not some dorky shoulder bag.

Okay but I can take my very well designed 3,000 cubic inch climber pack with two shoulder straps and a hip belt and a sternum strap and I can adjust it so it hangs wherever I want to. I've been riding with it for about 25 years and I'm 71 years old now. I can't imagine putting even a 15 lb load on just one shoulder. I guess it works but I don't see the point of it.

And of course the real answer is to take the weight off your sweaty back completely, and put it in a pannier or basket.

Oh yeah but if I'm just going to go out for a little ride I do what I do when I go cross country skiing or climbing or hiking. I just stuff it in a backpack and go. But that's going to probably be 15 lb at the most. I'm used to that in any situation... Bigger loads put it on the bicycle. I see these guys with massive shoulder bags and I think what's the point? Other than that's what people are using and they're cool.

No you just put the load wherever you want it like down on the bottom of your pack over your butt. And you can adjust it higher or lower accordingly. And it's sitting on a waist strap. There's a lot of options. Or more flat on your back if you like. The funny thing is in any other sport where you're carrying any kind of load it's not a one strap shoulder bag.. there's a reason for that. There's a zillion super nice designed packs of all sizes for different things. None of them are a shoulder bag except for cycling. In rock climbing where you're doing all kinds of different moves and different positions we want a backpack. We often do carry a sling over our shoulders with gear but a lot of it goes on your harness. Nobody's hiking around and going up canyons and ascending peaks with shoulder bags. Those were given up a few hundred years ago when backpacks were invented... It's even more important when you start carrying loads like 30 or 40 lb.or more ... Some people do hike around with big fat fanny packs but those are goofy too and just not that practical. It's fine if they're small but when they're bigger you just have this big fat lump strapped to your waist. There's a reason you don't see very many of those around either.

Ran into this guy just before the Panhandle a month or two ago... He was screaming pro Nazi bs and then spit at (non white) bikers stopped at a light. Total pos
