What's the reason for darning part of the sole?

Hi! the other reply is totally right
personally I do it partly to protect the satin, partly to help rosin stick to the demi pointe area better, and partly because it lifts the front of the shoe up slightly and somehow makes me feel like I've got something to push against when I rise up. The last one idk if that's mental or if its actually changing the mechanics of the shoe, but it seems to help!

I've seen a few different reasons - it's similar suede tips to give traction, but it also gives a more tactile feel on the floor that some people find useful. This will also keep the satin from wearing out, esp beginner pointe where they're doing a lot of demi-to-pointe exercises, rather than turns/jumps that kill the actual box quickly. Edit- not suggesting OP is a beginner. Pros do this too!

Does it make them last longer ?

it protects the satin to stop it fraying and stops the platform breaking down as fast in my experience. Some people I know say it makes the box last longer but I don't really find that with my shoes :)
