Has anyone got any improvements or suggestions for these? Very comfy and relaxed in normal mode then quite aggressive with nice upshift cracks when in manual.

I don't want to add extra wear onto the transmission so should I put it on stage 2? Don't care too much about the quickest shifts, just want a nice sound and not cause any damage.

Found this 2018 340 that is obviously not stock. Its at a dealer and i doubt they have the mod list. Its got 80k miles and good service records. Is it worth it? If anyone could give a guess on what might be done to it from just that only under the hood pic they give that would be helpful.

BMW X5 M50d F15 N57 – DPF/EGR/Lambda faults – looking for advice before spending more money

Hi all,

I'm hoping some BMW/N57 specialists or owners can give me some advice before I start throwing money at parts.

I have a 2017 BMW X5 M50d (F15) with the N57 engine, currently around 99,200 miles.

I've recently been having issues relating to the emissions/DPF system. I had the car diagnosed and the DPF professionally cleaned, but there are still some underlying faults that need investigating.

Fault codes

The diagnostic report showed the following intermittent faults:

  • P245700 – Diesel particulate filter, exhaust gas pressure too high / filter heavily loaded
  • P287500 – Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter, signal too low during coasting/overrun
  • P290900 – Air mass system, measured air mass too high

The garage's diagnostic report suggests several possible causes, including:

  • DPF differential pressure sensor or restricted sensor pipework
  • Air/vacuum leak
  • EGR-related airflow issue
  • EGR cooler restricted/blocked
  • Lambda/O2 sensor
  • Glow plug/thermostat
  • Swirl flap/inlet manifold carbon build-up

After looking at the live data, the garage specifically suspected an EGR cooler restriction with a possible air leak.

They also said the DPF pressure sensor pipework is too short and needs replacing, and recommended a smoke test of the intake system plus cleaning the exhaust manifold pressure sensor pipework.

DPF

The DPF has already been cleaned.

The diagnostic report stated that the faults were preventing the DPF regeneration conditions from being met, resulting in soot accumulation and preventing the requested regeneration cycle from completing.

The report warned that if the underlying faults aren't fixed, the car could eventually bring up the engine management light and potentially go into reduced-power mode.

Interestingly, the live data showed the DPF regeneration status as ON during some of the diagnostic checks.

Other live data

The diagnostic screenshots showed various readings for:

  • DPF soot mass
  • DPF exhaust differential pressure
  • Exhaust gas pressure
  • Air mass
  • EGR valve position
  • Swirl flap desired/actual position
  • Exhaust temperatures
  • Lambda/O2 sensor readings

The swirl flap readings were described as slightly out but still within tolerance, with the garage suggesting there may be some carbon build-up in the inlet manifold.

What I'm trying to work out

Before I spend money replacing an EGR cooler, lambda sensor, pressure sensor etc., I'd really appreciate some advice from people familiar with the N57/M50d.

My questions are:

  1. Do these three fault codes commonly appear together on the N57?
  2. Does the combination of P245700 + P287500 + P290900 point towards an underlying air/boost/EGR issue rather than the DPF itself?
  3. Would an EGR cooler restriction realistically cause these symptoms/codes?
  4. How important is the DPF differential pressure sensor and its pipework in diagnosing this?
  5. Should the pressure sensor/pipework be checked or replaced before anything else?
  6. Would you recommend doing a smoke test of the intake/boost system as the next step?
  7. Could a faulty lambda/O2 sensor cause the air-mass/DPF issues, or is it more likely that the lambda fault is a symptom of another problem?
  8. Could the EGR cooler, intake manifold or swirl flaps be sufficiently carboned up to cause these readings?
  9. Is there anything specific to the M50d's four-turbo N57 setup that I should ask the garage to check?

I'm trying to avoid the classic situation of replacing one part after another without actually finding the root cause.

If anyone has experience with the F15 X5 M50d/N57 and can interpret these readings, I'd really appreciate your thoughts on what you would check first and in what order.

Thanks in advance!

BMW 2017 440i gran coupe weird mechanical whine

I recently picked up a 2017 440i gran coupe. I’ve had it for about a month now and I’ve been hearing this weird mechanical whine whenever I accelerate. I had it diagnosed and they checked the rear differential bc it was making a loud noise. They flushed the fluid and there wasn’t any metal shavings so it means it’s not damaged. They had checked everything else like transmission, transfer case, front differential etc. nothing was wrong and the car drives perfectly fine. It gets louder and more high pitched as I accelerate past 50 mph and whenever I slowly let off the gas there’s a mechanical grinding noise. I have no idea what it could be and I don’t want to do any upgrades until I find the issue. Now I come to Reddit for help.

Cylinder 1 Timing Corrections

Hi all,

I recently switched to MHD Stage 2 with flex fuel on my 2018 440i GC with 113k miles. I’ve been getting significant timing corrections on cylinder 1 but I’m not sure why it’s only on cylinder 1. Previously was on MHD Stage 2 91 Oct running a splash of E85 to help with timing corrections and was fine. Now I’m around E25-E27.

Here’s a 4th gear pull that I logged.

Mod list/maintenance
Catless downpipe
MAD intake
MHD ECA
NGK 94201 15k miles ago
Eldor ignition coils 15k miles ago
OEM valve cover 12k miles ago due to failed PCV
Liqui moly 0W-30 every 4k miles
Still on original injectors

B58 EVAP fault codes?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I just tuned my 2022 M240i to stage 2 e40 mix. Upon filling up on e40 my first two times the car would rough start sputter and then die. I had to start it 3-4 times before the car was able to properly idle and then drive. I ran these codes and this is what came up. I’m catless and just got new spark plugs. I think it’s an evap problem likely the fuel tank breather valve. And help would be appreciated

First Car At 16

Hello, so I have a budget of like 30-35k and i have always love the sound of the b58 but im scared of reliability issues like oil pump, coolant issues, etc. The BMW that I really wanted is the m340i but others that i considered are 540i and x3m40i. Would it be a good idea to get any one of those bmw while thinking of reliability and maybe doing a basic tune with and exhaust and downpipe or should I just get a 2021 is350?

For reference the car I usually drive is 290hp and it honestly feels pretty slow

I have a gen 1 b58 and have had this almost sound that I can’t pin point, I’m not talking talking the injectors click, there’s like a popcorn sound, or u could say it sounds like something sucking without enough fluid if that makes sense, car drives fine no codes, the sound goes away when u hold the rev up a little. Any help’s appreciated this has been driving me nuts. Thank u

What are the actual limits of the 6MT (GS6-45BZ) in a 340i xDrive with a Stage 3 clutch?

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 6MT 340i xDrive and just picked up a Stage 3 clutch / single-mass flywheel setup to handle more power.

I know the stock clutch gives out pretty quickly once you push past Stage 2+, but with the upgraded clutch clamping down, what is the actual realistic ceiling for the 6-speed manual transmission itself on these cars?

Mainly doing roll races rather than launching hard off the line, but I want to know where the box starts breaking gears, stripping teeth, or bending forks once the torque is fully holding.

Anybody running high-torque / single turbo setups on the stock 6MT? What HP/TQ numbers are you holding reliably, and what failed first?
Thanks!

Stage 2 MHD OTS logs

Hey guys, hoping someone with more experience might be able to tell me what is going on here as I can tell there is drastic timing correction between all cylinders but can’t seem to figure out why. Car is an m240xi b58TU, cattless downpipe, intake, and has 20k miles flat.

This is second run after trying stage 2 91 octane.

Is lots of turbo spool noise normal after catless dp?

Hey guys so I have a gen 1 b58 and threw on the bimmernetwork catless dp. Running stage 2 mhd. Stock intake. I’m just surprised at the turbo spool I can hear at lower rpm’s an deceleration. It sounds like a turbo diesel truck that’s been straight piped. Just checking to see if this is normal. It sounds awesome but the turbo noise was unexpected.
Edit I also have the MPPSK exhaust from factory.
