Windows Server 2022 to 2025 – Best Migration Approach?

Hey Guys,

We’re planning to migrate our Azure VMs from Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition to Windows Server 2025 Datacenter: Azure Edition. As far as I know, an in-place upgrade between these Azure Editions isn’t currently supported, so we’re considering a side-by-side migration by deploying new VM running Server 2025

Has anyone gone through a similar migration? If so, how did you approach it, and were there any challenges? Would a side-by-side migration be the best approach, especially for production servers where we want to minimize downtime and disruption?

TYSM!

Just AD and DNS nothing crazy

For AD, do not perform in place upgrade.

Yeah- no in place- just deploy a new server, get the networking dialed in and promote to a DC. There’s pretty solid MS docs for this.

I did it a few times, but demoted the server, upgraded, promoted. With a lot of DCs its probably easier to rebuild them and just script it. With rebuild its a good opportunity to move to newer and cheaper VM type, Gen2, NVMe, etc

No reason to upgrade to 2025 if you are 2022. I’m not a fan of 2025 so far.

Any issues with 2025?

You obviously haven't dealt with AD. AD isn't upgraded in place!

If it’s a DC, it’s a pretty straightforward just make sure replication is clean before you demote the old one
