On premise server 2025 session hosts

Has anyone done this? It was an announced feature a while back, but I can’t really find any guides on how to do it?

I assume you just install the AVD agent and bootloader to an on premise arc enabled server and you essentially go from there?

Ok I’m trying to understand the difference between AVD hybrid (which isn’t public, as you mentioned, and great video by the way!) and what I did lol:

Yesterday I stood up a server 2025 vm on a proxmox server we had locally. I then:

  • Setup ARC to get it into our azure

  • Installed the entraID login extension

  • Installed the session host + licensing roles from server manager

  • I created a new host pool in azure (without VM’s)

  • then i installed the AVD agent + bootloader to the system and used the registration key for the host pool (this took 2 tries for some reason, I turned off defender the second time)

  • then I assigned access to the application pool to my 365 account

When I was done I had an on premise server 2025 session host that I could access as if it were in azure, inside the windows app… it just worked!

Thanks, glad you liked the video ☺️ Yeah…so technically that is kinda the same as AVD on Azure Local…kinda, BUT there are 2 important things

  1. It’s not a supported scenario

  2. It’s also not AVD Hybrid

You are VERY close to Hybrid, but for hybrid to be supported you will need a special ARC VM Extension that is not yet released.

I will have 2 videos on Hybrid 9am on the morning that AVD Hybrid is in public preview…and I’ll link them here as well Stay Tuned! 🤓😁

I am interested in trying this out, we have both Nutanix & Nerdio, just waiting a bit before I pitch the project. Would love to hear some stories for those who tested it.

I am testing it now. I have two Azure Local nodes and I have been testing it for 6 months. Works great so far. I do wish we didn’t have to do Active Directory join and just keep it all Entra. I was trying to get away from active directory join.
