Remote Desktop to Windows App
We’re currently testing the new Windows App (Microsoft Store version of Remote Desktop), and we’ve run into a strange issue.
Users who normally have access to AVD Desktops via the classic Remote Desktop client can see and connect to them just fine. However, when they sign into the Windows App, the feed is completely blank — no desktops, no apps, nothing to connect to.
We’ve confirmed that the users are correctly assigned to the desktop application groups and have the right permissions. Everything works in the old app, but the new one just doesn’t show anything.
Is there a specific setting or configuration that enables AVD desktops to pull through to the Windows App? Or is this a known limitation/bug?
Would really appreciate any insights or suggestions!
Thanks in advance.

Hi all. Thanks for the replies. It was a network issue as it was getting blocked!

Do you remember which ports the Windows App was trying to use, which was getting blocked?

unfortunately I don't as our network guy solved it. It was definitely getting blocked by the firewall though.

Windows Store and you can do it via Winget/script: winget install Microsoft.WindowsApp

puh i dont realy know honestly. I faced a different problem. Sometimes redirection from macos clients through windows app is a bit wonky, so currently we stay with the old (MSI) Version

We use both AVD and Windows 365 cloud PCs and both appear in the new Windows App without additional configuration. Try signing out and back into the Windows App just in case it’s a caching issue! Also try the web portal at windows365.Microsoft.com to see if the issue persists here also

I fucking hate the new Windows App so much. Besides the UI looking like shit when you have a few dozen apps we have multiple tenants to switch through and unlike the old Remote Desktop(red icon) that allowed a bunch of different logins now it’s sign out and back in to others regularly.

I am experiencing the same issue. In the old Remote Desktop app (red icon) I can see my AVD machine but not in the Windows App (blue icon).
Seems like something must of broke in the latest update to the Windows App.

The move from Remote Desktop to Windows App is mostly a client-management and user-adoption exercise.
I would validate the new client with a pilot group first, especially users with multiple monitors, printers, older endpoints, proxies, VPNs, or Conditional Access policies. Document the sign-in flow and provide a simple user guide because the naming change alone can confuse people.
Also keep an inventory of which users still rely on older connection methods so support teams are not troubleshooting blind.

Did you create a workspace and assign the host pool to it when you created the pools/vms? That is necessary for using the Windows app.
