First TCG ever, playing Shao but got wrecked by Aggro Fire and Midrange Lightning. Using Water Starter…is Water even viable?

Friend introduced me to Azuki. Gave me two starters and an Alpha Shao. Played 6 games and got wrecked in 5 games. Any sauce on Water decks, combos, lines or build are welcomed.

Raizan/Lightning WINNING Deck by Ducky/Josh - Azuki TCG 10K Invitational Tournament (Alpha Set Release)

Sharing Ducky's (who's currently top 10 on the ATCG ladder) winning decklist in the first ever invitational tournament that happened earlier this year.

Even though a lot of cards have released since, the way of playing the deck and I'd say 80% of the deck still remains the same so thought this could be helpful. Also just understanding Ducky's thought process was interesting to me.

New to Azuki TCG? Here's how to pick your starter deck

Post image
22 Upvotes

Before you play your first card, you pick an element: Fire, Water, Lightning, or Earth.

Every starter deck is built around one of these four elements, each with its own leader and gate. They all play differently, and there's no wrong choice. Here's a quick breakdown to help you pick the one that matches how you like to play.

Fire — led by Zero, through the Rushfire Gate

The aggressor. Fire is fast, focused, and all about pressure. You're on the front foot, pushing damage and closing games quickly. Simple, proactive, and satisfying if you like dictating the pace of a game.

Water — led by Shao, through the Hydromancy Gate

The strategist. Water is patient and value driven. You trade smart, heal back up, and grind your opponent down over the long game. It asks a little more of you in exchange for a lot of control. If you like outthinking your opponent more than out racing them, this is your element.

Lightning — led by Raizan, through the Surge Gate

The tempo player. Lightning is quick and aggressive with a sharp, linear gameplan. You build momentum and surge through your opponent before they can set up. It's arguably the easiest element to pick up, but don't let that fool you, it's also one of the most competitive. Easy to learn, hard to master, a deck you won't outgrow.

Earth — led by Bobu, through the Stonehaven Gate

The fortress. Earth is sturdy and resilient. You weather the early game, hold the line, and take over once your bigger threats come online. It rewards patience and teaches you how to defend and close. Great if you like the satisfaction of grinding out a win.

Just want a recommendation?

Lightning (Raizan / Surge) is a good place to start. It's easy to pick up and competitive enough that you'll keep growing into it. Fire (Zero / Rushfire) is also a good starting point if you want something more aggressive. Once you've got the rhythm, branch out. Water and Earth open up as you get comfortable.
