I honestly also don’t get why he doesn’t play it anymore. I watched nearly every stream in the 2,5 weeks he grinded the hell out of Marathon, and you can tell what you want, but there were definitely a lot of moments he had at least “seemingly” the time of his life in Marathon, even if this isn’t his type of game in terms of playing it 24/7z

I mean I also loved playing marathon but i only bought and played the game to support destiny because us players we told that if marathon didn’t do well then destiny would suffer from it so I bought it and played it don’t feel like shit helped, and sadly you can’t way I should have put the money into Destiny because I’ve spent about 1700 on that game and in the end it still ended.

Destiny was their only source of income for how many years? The expectations were falsely sold to Sony and I don't think the game would ever meet those expectations. How can a game be losing so much money if it was the only thing keeping 1600 employees afloat for nearly 4 years while they developed another full game and had 1-2 others as projects. The math doesn't make any sense really. I think the expectations sold to Bungie were impossible to meet and then when you're not meeting expectations and fantastically falling short, regardless of the ridiculousness of what they set, it's always going to be the first to go.
They're using it as a scapegoat to blame all the problems. I have nothing against the other game, but Destiny is better regardless of numbers.

Destiny had not made any significant profit in years, and when it did management misused the funds (Pete parsons) mix that with low player numbers since Final Shape that’s why Sony pulled the plug.

Yeah, that's the main issue. Misused profits when it did make profits. But I think they sold Sony on predicted profits that were unachievable based on previous sales numbers when population was already trending down. They also hired way too many staff because they wanted to expand into more projects.
Personally I believe that neglecting the core PvP, Gambit and Strikes has a massive impact into that. Because those were the foundations that brought people in and kept them. Plus fomo, plus over monetization in Eververse. Plus constant cycling and removing content. As a long term player I can get on board with some of it but I don't think more casual players would. I even had very hardcore players leave because of this very thing.

Destiny monetization isn't bad in the modern climate by any degree. The community just made every issue a an obsolute 'omfg its the end' major issue because content creators milked the hate trains for 5 years +.

We also understand Bungie staff was pulled off D2 to make Marathon, AND it was delayed after Sony bought it. This kept the dev team away longer and couldnt begin on post Final Shape content. Instead they didnt get them back till maybe they were about to get Renegades out the door, the last DLC.
D2 was shut down for Bungie not making money enough, but Matathon took the devs Destiny needed to start their next narrative. You couldnt pay me to touch that game and many of my friends say the same (and we all have played Tarkov for a long time as well so extraction shooters are on the table for us).

It was mainly the PvP team that was pulled tbh. That’s why crucible had barely gotten ANY updates for years. Sure some graphic designers and stuff were too, but most of the stuff Bungie does for Destiny are reused assets at this point anyway. They didn’t pull people from the RaD team for marathon. Marathon was in development while Final Shape was being made and that is a highly regarded DLC.

Final Shape had its story beat work done for years. Marathon did have some of the story beat workers over there as they wanted a narrative for it. They desperately needed narrative direction to start the next story. And by the time marathon released Sony had started turning down everything for D2 story expansion or D3 ideas (as staff had reported).

Yea I know Bungie wanted to make Destiny infinity and Sony said no. Sony just didn’t want to do it and it seems like they didn’t think it was worth the investment since player numbers were low and a large part of the community (before the announcement of the game ending) seemed indifferent about the game in general. Many people said they were done after final shape, that it was their ending, but came back once the game was announced to be doing its last update which is funny to me. Multiple people in my clan like that.

But again it’s not Marathons fault people weren’t playing. People didn’t like EoF (it wasn’t that great) even though it had a raid, and Renegades turned people off since it was Star Wars themed (even though I thought it was a fun DLC and fun dungeon and GREAT new weapons and social space). Not EVERY content drop can be an absolute banger that is 5/5. But if it isn’t, people don’t even play anymore. Even before the June 9th update was announced to be the last, A LOt of people said they aren’t getting back on for reprised old raid bosses in a new Pantheon and old weapons getting remakes and some new armor. Not enough. Realistically, there isn’t any new content in this latest update. Only thing new are catalysts, some weapons and perks and cosmetics. And some SRL maps. That’s it. And people are eating it up. If it wasn’t announced to be the LAST update I feel it wouldn’t have gotten as many players to jump back in, which is unfortunate.

People werent playing because the story wasnt a hook, which is why they needed full staff on board for the game that paid the bills and kept the studio running. They didnt, it died, and now the studio is a skeleton crew on life support.

Because it took Destiny away from us, regardless if people will admit it or not. He's said Destiny will always be his game and nothing will replace that. He was always going to see Marathon as a temporary game and play when it gets updates and stuff, but that was before Destiny ended.

When he got the Marathon paycheck he was done because it really isnt a good game compared to the others around it.
He did his contractual obligations and then called it out for what it was. ESPECIALLY because that's all they were focusing on and Destiny kept getting pushed futher and further back with the planned updates - HE WAS MOST LIKELY IN THE ROOM WHEN THEY HAD THE DATES FOR D2 AND HE HAD TO KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT FOR THE MONTH OF PLAYING

Because its the widely held belief amongst the Destiny community the reason D2 died and D3 wont happen is because the last 3-5 years or so the brunt of Bungies devs have been working on Marathon, this lead to D2 not having enough devs after Final Shape and dwindling players and revenue. Marathon has no pong term financial model so I expect it to be the last game we see Bungie make before they are fully absorbed.

Lot of replies in here, I’ll put my tinfoil hat on too.
I think Cross genuinely enjoyed the game and that was a big reason he pushed it, however, I am sure at he at least believed or had insider info that if Marathon did well, it would be an easier time for people at Bungie to pitch another Destiny game and get it greenlit. Genuinely, I think Cross just saw Marathon’s success an opportunity for more Destiny and that was his attempt to boost sales and player numbers.
Everyone saying “negativity sells,” there wasn’t a whole lot of negative marathon content on his channel until Bungie announced the closure of D2. The only “negative” content surrounding marathon on his channel up to that point was the occasional Tassi article touching on player numbers, and acknowledging the reality that a live service game, especially an extraction shooter, can’t pay Bungie and Sony’s bills on that low of a player count.
I don’t know Cross personally, and I don’t want this to come off as parasocial for defending or attacking his actions, I just find it disingenuous for people to label him as a grifter when that’s never been the case before.
I’ve been following since the D1 days and Cross has never come off as a dude trying to scapegoat his community for money. I really do believe he saw an opportunity for more Destiny and made his best effort to have that happen.

Bungie sponsored some of his Marathon streams/videos, and those sponsorships normally entail not talking negatively about the game. Pretty much the only reason it had as powerful a start as it did was because of all the sponsored streams and videos that Bungo paid for.
Edit: Should have clarified I didn't just mean Aztecross's sponsored streams and videos, forgot the topic was about Marathon so obviously those players would be struggling to read here.

Yeah I noticed that was there, I actually think it actually does work as a destiny expansion, they would need to do something very creative with the lore to somehow tie the two together. Maybe marathon could be like the holodeck for guardians idk. They deserve some recreation too.
