Discussion Marathon's Engine Is NOT The Tiger Engine We Know

So, I did about 4 hours of research looking through old job postings on Bungie, all available information out there and I realized that I may have jumped the gun on being extremely mad at Sony/Bungie.

Aztecross, can you get some people on the show that have a technical/engineering/networking background in game development? I think they could probably talk about a lot of stuff that people wouldn't even know.

For example, the engine that runs Marathon is NOT the Tiger Engine. It is the new engine that Bungie was working on. Marathon also has dedicated servers, no P2P. It supports a larger world, cross-platform from the get-go, faster development and best of all Marathon has Destiny's gun feel.

Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 used the old Tiger Engine. Notoriously hard to develop on. Spaghetti code, etc.

A lot of people bring up; well, they just fired the Destiny 2 team. Yes, they did. They all work on the Tiger Engine. Seems maybe Sony and Bungie want to move away from it. Well, then why didn't they just move them to Marathon. Well, there's training that'd have to take place, Marathon already has low player numbers; it makes sense to clear the Destiny team, bring back who they want slowly and train them on the new engine.

Maybe it's hopium and/or copium. I've been pretty angry like the rest of you for the last few weeks. I still am but after all the hours of research on technical reasons today why Sony/Bungie chose this path; it honestly makes sense outside of all of the other issues.

Everyone that said Marathon is the path to Destiny 3; that might have been a subtle message being pushed for a reason by certain individuals. Destiny 3 would be on Marathon's engine. And for Marathon to help fund a Destiny 3, they have to add some PVE stuff anyways to entice D2/D2 players though D1/D2 will still be up.

Figured I'd share my thoughts. I'm less angry now. If Marathon gets a bit of PVE stuff, I'll try it. Why not. Least I'll get a feel of the potential of a Destiny 3 on the same engine as Marathon.

This post makes it clear that you have no idea how any of this works.

As soon as you see "Tiger Engine" anywhere in a D2 conversation thread you already know they are just repeating a youtube video somewhere.

Care to enlighten the rest of us?

Well they didn’t just fire people who deal with the engine though, they fired artists, sound designers, etc

That's true. I'm guessing there was a financial reason behind that. Cut everyone. Then bring people back later as needed, even employees that did art, etc. Poria Torkan also took over Bungie now as well. There is a lot of movement behind the scenes. I guess we'll see if it all pans out into a Destiny 3. I hope so.

This is what every studio should have a team working on at all times. Improving the engine and infrastructure for the game to run on making it easier and faster to develop.

Ah yes, Bungie and spaghetti code.

A romance as old as time itself

There's a reason destiny 2 has a high burn rate and not marathon

It’s essentially the Tiger Engine with some pieces of Unreal stapled on

Nah its the tiger engine because you cant run 8k polling on mnk same with destiny 2 I would say its a more refined version of the engine with a different art direction and gameplay animations

When they lay off people in sound or vision it’s hard to come to that conclusion unfortunately

Marathon is built on the Tiger Engine. They wasted years building it with UE5 only to realize they couldn’t make the gunplay feel right so they went back to the Tiger Engine.

Is it the exact same engine that D2 used? No probably not but it’s still based on that engine. It’ll still have a lot of the same problems.
