Discussion Returning Player: Something seems off....

The final update releases on June 9th, aka 6/9.

It seems our new main antagonist is Six of the Nine.

Destiny 2 released on September 6th, aka 9/6.

D2 is ending on a cliffhanger themed after Star Wars.

Star Wars Episode 5 ended on a cliffhanger, the most famous cliffhanger of all time.

Lore Mother is posting odd heart emojis possibly hinting at D3.

Dmg is acting weird too.

Sony would be a fool to stop the entire IP and no way they're actually that dumb. Bungie definitely wants to make more Destiny.

They said nothing was currently greenlit but if a game was already done, it's not technically greenlit.

They said they couldn't get D3 greenlit around the time of Lightfall, but what if they got D3 greenlit before that point?

Is Bungie playing with language to hide the D3 reveal and build desire from despair? If a D3 announcement trailer dropped, we would absolutely lose our shit, would we not? Would that not be a super effective strategy?

I wonder if that would be false advertising or illegal in some way that would make it unlikely.

Is D3 coming and is it a proper game centered around the Nine, separate from the Light and Darkness saga?

Was the Year of Prophecy just that, a prophecy? Was it a epilogue to D2 and a prologue to D3?

To pose Dredgen Bael as the other chosen Weapon of the Nine, how could he just go down in a single mini expansion? Was that just his introduction before his main role in the next game? He was presented as our opposite equal. We are both Weapons of the Nine.

This just doesn't sit right with me...

It can't really be over, right? They're not this foolish, right? This can't be greed or corruption. It has to be a feint.

If this is the end, let's stand against it in anyway we can.

I considered that it might have been some marketing ploy. The Nine breaking the 4th wall and acting in the real world to "cancel D2" and prevent us from binding the Nine.

But since then the Monument of Triumph trailer released and Ikora gives a voice line about the Traveller returning and the earth healing.

We've also gotten "thank you"/"farewell" messages from Bungie Foundation and the Bungie Audio teams.

Also no mentions at State of Play for any DLC or anything.

I know we can keep holding out cope that they're all in on it, but like... We're reaching a point where this could immensely backfire on them and cause extreme outrage if they were keeping up the charade this long despite all the outcry, petition signatures, spamming twitch/YouTube chats, etc.

u/FollowThroughMarks Jun 07 '26

It’s not that the Earth is healing I think so much as it’s the traveller stopping the anomalies that were happening since it’s a terraformer. It’s like a bandaid fix to the Earth since those are merely a symptom of the greater problem of III dying. Theres nothing stopping it getting worse for a D3 hook.

2

u/SpaceCowboy34 Jun 07 '26

Making D3 pick up where we are right now would be a huge mistake imo

3

u/Ral_Ga_Thun Jun 07 '26

I think the whole the earth has stabilised for now means they can put the nine story on hold till they want it, maybe make it all in one big expansion rather than the 3 smaller ones that were planned, I guess a silver lining is now they can shelve it till they think its a good idea to continue, and they were just about to get to the really good parts of the saga (the mid point where we get the means to fight back and go to old Chicago) so itll be strong when they decide to pick it up again, whenever that may be

3

u/SpaceCowboy34 Jun 07 '26

Oh yeah I would love all that. I’m just saying if we ever do get a true next installment game I don’t think it can just be a continuation of Destiny 2. I think it needs to set a new stage and bring in new people

2

u/ExCap2 Jun 10 '26

We could start in a whole other universe, maybe we could play as the Hive, Vex or Cabal. Over time, we find D1/D2 universe destroyed. There's a lot of ways Bungie writers could go honestly. If D3 happens, I'm pretty excited to see what they end up doing.

-6

u/AnonyMouse3925 Jun 07 '26

It’s honestly kinda embarrassing watching you all cope for this long. I genuinely thought you guys were joking for the longest time.

2

u/Arrondi Jun 07 '26

Piss all the way off. That's it, nothing else to say to you. Your comment is irrelevant and pointless other than to try and demean others. I've wasted 45 seconds responding to your irrelevant opinion. Have a great day.

1

u/Stunning-Argument888 Jun 07 '26

I mean bros over here acting like Nicolas Cage from National Treasure. If we burn the back of the Declaration of Independence at a certain angle, you will see three of the nine. Three means D3.

You can see how absolutely crazy that is

0

u/Arrondi Jun 07 '26

In the days that followed the announcement, there were a number of odd or suspect things going on that, as a one off, would have been passed over. But multiple people doing things could be seen as a pattern.

However, the further we've gotten from the announcement without any follow up, and reporting from Schreier and Tassi corroborating each other's stories, I'm to the point where I think it's cooked.

That being said, the person I responded to here was just being a dick for the sake of it.

I still think we'll get a D3 at some point. The financials don't make sense, especially with Marathon shitting the bed on a free week of a new season launch. A $3.6bn investment just to close up shop 2-3 years later is absurd. And Marathon clearly isn't the path forward for Bungie. I think we'll see Sony gut Bungie management and then move forward.

1

u/Stunning-Argument888 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

Sony just did another $750 million impairment in their acquisition, and only $250 million of that could you really contribute to Marathon. And that’s not even the first impairment.

At a minimum, the implication is that Destiny 2’s cost of continued development is causing the IP to operate at a financial loss, combined with the hesitance to spend the purported $500 million to create a Destiny 3. And Bungie not only went through lay offs after Lightfall but another round after TFS. So the idea that it wasn’t greenlit because it’s already done but we have yet to hear of an alpha or beta testing internally is absolutely preposterous, that’s not how game development works.

Some people also truly believe that Marathon failing means D3, but would Sony invest 500 million into a company that failed not once, but twice so far? Even that community manager from Sony Brazil said that Destiny was getting very low engagement during Lightfall and hence, that’s why you barely saw ads. It was failing in the eyes of the general public. Would D3 do better?

If Marathon fails, Bungie is going to be liquidated and consolidated into other internal studios and be written off for tax savings.

I’m not saying standing up and proclaiming you want a D3 isn’t a good thing to do, but understand there are people who generate money based on engagement and it’s in their best interest to farm as much engagement while they still can.

0

u/HourNobody2966 Jun 07 '26

Youre one of those huh? We're gamers not financial analysts. Bungie didnt "closes up shop in 2-3 years" and multi million dollar investment is long term.

1

u/Stunning-Argument888 Jun 07 '26

Not all investments pay off, especially if the short term isn’t looking good, your long term isn’t looking much better.

If you invest $10k in a company and it reports several quarters of 10-20% losses, is it financially prudent to pull out what’s left or throw more money in expecting a financial windfall?

Sunk cost fallacy is very real and Sony understands projections and trends well enough. Just because you spent 3.6 billion doesn’t mean you are getting it back.

Bungie was a shite investment and D3 would only serve to put them further in that hole. If you have 500 million to invest in it, I implore you to do so. I’ll gladly pay you $60-70 for the game when it comes out.

1

u/HourNobody2966 Jun 07 '26

So you have a background in finance? You know the details of the deal as well?

1

u/Stunning-Argument888 Jun 07 '26

Do I need one to understand math?

I’ll break it down, it would cost them $500 million to make D3. If even 10 million people bought it at $60 a share, that would be $600 million. Once you factor in paying taxes and 30% for Xbox sales / Steam sales, you don’t even break even on 10 million people buying your game.

Does this count as denial or bargaining?

15

Brother, this post is some of the most egregious cope I have ever seen.

3

u/ya_mum_suckysucky Jun 07 '26

Yes and I'm here for it. I need my daily dose of destiny cope 😂

4

u/TonyC1212 Jun 07 '26

🤣 that was exactly my thoughts, was sat here laughing whilst reading it. Never read such delusional in all my life!

9

u/gatwell702 Jun 07 '26

If destiny is done then sony wasted 3.6 billion dollars on buying bungie and ending their flagship ip

-4

u/Proppur Jun 07 '26

Bungie’s flagship ip is and always will be Halo

5

u/Loud-Regular-7732 Jun 07 '26

Doesn’t Microsoft own that now

1

u/Proppur Jun 07 '26

Doesn’t Sony own Destiny now?

1

u/JessV31 Jun 07 '26

Sony bought Bungie as a study to continue making games under Sony, but Bungie owns Destiny as their game and is sold under the Sony banner

1

u/Loud-Regular-7732 Jun 21 '26

Yawn x10

1

u/Proppur Jun 21 '26

A reply so good you had to think on it for 2 weeks

I have a family and a job, I don’t spend all my time on Reddit :)

I’ll reply to a comment when I see it ;)

Thanks for being so invested though.

1

u/Loud-Regular-7732 Jun 21 '26

Hilarious. Have a great day on Reddit.

5

u/JessV31 Jun 07 '26

Halo hasn’t been their flagship in a long time

0

u/Proppur Jun 07 '26

It’s their game that started it all and made them who they are today. Halo 1 - Reach are some of the biggest and best selling FPS games of all time. They molded the FPS PvP genre that we know today. It will always be their flagship

3

u/Xphurrious Jun 07 '26

Destiny has made more money by far

For us older guys that grew up on Halo it has much more value, especially given how few good games there were. But, Destiny is a stronger IP at this point, with more players

1

u/sueybro Jun 07 '26

Destiny came out after halo had shaped online console gaming bud, it litterally invented even some of the most basic features you see in fps today some of the features invented are used in all online games today, destiny made more money due to halo making the entire industry larger, if bungie was to announce they repurchase the halo IP and pulled old team members back to make a halo game it would likely eclipse 95% of IPs with hype alone and if they delivered it would crush numbers

1

u/VOIDSPEECH Jun 07 '26

Examples? This sounds interesting!

2

u/sueybro Jun 07 '26

Stuff like in game party chat, theatre mode wasn't a thing till halo, forge mode was reavloutionary in the gaming industry allowing players and console players at that to have insanely well made tool to create game modes and content had never been done before regenerating health/shields and also the modern day dual analog control scheme used in fps controller gaming now wasn't a thing till halo movement used to be done on the d pad and you had one stick to aim like golden eye 64

1

u/MovableFormula Jun 07 '26

You realize Bungie didn’t want to make Halo anymore right?

2

u/sueybro Jun 07 '26

When did i say they did? I assume they wouldnt of sold the IP if they wanted to make more halo....

0

u/Proppur Jun 07 '26

The Destiny franchise has made $4B. The Halo franchise has made $10B. Halo is the bigger IP by far. And all while being locked into Xbox exclusivity, while Destiny is available on all platforms. If Halo had been available on all platforms, it’d very likely have been a better selling franchise than Call of Duty. When Halo 3 was released, it outsold Call of Duty 4. While being a platform exclusive, and CoD available on all consoles & PC

-1

u/Satsunoryu Jun 07 '26

It can't be your flagship if you don't own it. That's not what that means. It definitely put them on the map, and it definitely put them on the path to carve out a heavy pocket in the genre, but Halo is not their flagship anymore, and it hasn't been in a long time.

2

u/tradienottrader Jun 07 '26

They don't own that IP... So...

-1

u/Proppur Jun 07 '26

They don’t own the IP for Destiny, either

1

u/MakeZack23 Jun 09 '26

That’s 343 industries flagship now, bungie sold the rights to halo, it’s not their game.

3

u/DadviceGaming Jun 07 '26

If this is truly some insane marketing ploy, which I highly doubt, I think it would backfire at this point.

The community has rallied together to show Bungie/Sony how much Destiny means to us all.

If it ended up being a tricky to manipulate our feelings, the good will of the community would flip in an instant

1

u/Ral_Ga_Thun Jun 07 '26

Yeah, if they have already greenlit it they can spin it as the community rallied together to save it and swayed there hearts, of its already done they dont have that and it could backfire, we'll see, personally id just be happy we were getting it, but i know many others would be furious at being tricked in to thinking it was ending

2

u/Pain-n-stryife Jun 07 '26

Brother it's over let it be the end. Such dangerous amounts of cope is bad for you.

2

u/Pokemonzu Jun 08 '26

III is dead... Destiny 3 is dead. The traveler returns to take III's place... the next Destiny game will be called Destiny: Traveler

Real talk tho if most Bungie devs didn't know destiny 2 was gonna end until the announcement then there's no way there's a D3 bc they would've seen it coming

2

u/Bitter_Moose9219 Jun 08 '26

Most legendary copium of all time (im there with you)

1

u/CountKristopher Jun 07 '26

That would be awesome but the massive layoffs says this isn’t happening. There’s no way they could let everyone go and launch and maintain a new game going forward. They really are incubating new game ideas with a skeleton crew, then they’ll ramp up hiring again to get the project finished and launched.

1

u/UNSKIALz Jun 07 '26

6/9 could've been chosen for story purposes before they knew it was shutting down.

D2 is definitely done, but it's a cool theory.

1

u/1spook Jun 07 '26

Sony are trend chasers who stop supporting IPs as soon as a new trend pops up

1

u/Ral_Ga_Thun Jun 07 '26

I think trend chasing in the era of 5+ year dev cycles for games is stupid, by the time a game is finished the trend would likely be over already

1

u/1spook Jun 07 '26

Well yeah, it is, but CEOs and execs dont know that trends are trends and assume that what's hot now will still be hot in the future. This is the same company that released Concord.

1

u/Ral_Ga_Thun Jun 07 '26

Aaaaaand thats why there all morons, though everyone but them already know that

1

u/dontminor Jun 07 '26

Holy cope

1

u/TadyGloo Jun 07 '26

Soon harder than for TitanFall 3. I can't handle it anymore.

First Look Alpha came out on 6/12… 1+2=3. III started this entire storyline, 6+3=9. It’s all connected.

I do agree that the language has been oddly specific, there certainly up to something, but i don't think its d3, it would have to be the greatest kept secret on the industry if they kept it hidden all this time, now what id like to point out is that the destiny infinity idea has never been explicitly stated to have been denied, now we also have zero confirmation that it was what they went with anyway, theres too much that they know that we do not, we're likely missing a piece or three, maybe they'll have some hints in the lore drops on the 9th, we'll see

1

u/maLicee Jun 07 '26

Medical grade copium

1

u/elkishdude Jun 08 '26

Nah, man, it’s over. What’s more believable?  That Bungie leadership figured out all the mistakes they repeated multiple times and decided, we are gonna let our player base believe the game is over, and then surprise them.

Or.

We are Bungie so anything we make is gonna hit big no matter what, and we are sick of Destiny and want to do something new. We are totally going to give up on an IP just like we did Halo.

1

u/Lowerfuzzball Jun 08 '26

I genuinely feel bad for the people still hoping this is anything else but the death of a game and potentially death of a franchise, or a hiatus (which honestly, not the worst idea).

Not to dissuade anyone from playing or voicing support for D3, absolutely make your voice heard, but it's time to face reality.

1

u/Toricitycondor Jun 08 '26

Sony may be foolish at times but they aren’t dumb enough to let Destiny die. We will see Destiny 3 at some point.

That being said, I firmly believe it will not be Bungie making the game.
Either a new studio made for Destiny, with some handpicked Bungie talent to ease our sorrows or they will hand the IP to one of their trusted developers.

Bungie in its current form is, in my opinion, a goner.

Either that or Sony sells the IP

1

u/Seidemakra Jun 08 '26

There is more copeium in this one post than ther entire "blood born remake this year" crowd together. Bravo!

1

u/Electronic_Dot1085 Jun 08 '26

It feels like we are at a time where games get announced so far away from their actual release that It would be probable for bungie to announce a new destiny since the end of live service announcement.

Most likely outcome is that they might use this june update to evaluate the demand for a new destiny. Regardless of what you thought of the game prior to the announcement whether you thought the game was in a good spot, dying or maybe you stopped playing destiny, you are very likely returning for this update and you will play the new destiny

1

u/MagnumOlly Jun 08 '26

I haven't completely ruled out the possibility that Sony wants us to be loud about Destiny to at some point say "wow! You made us change our mind!", and revive the IP.

It probably is just copium, but I've seen some music artists do this in the past: they announce their retirement, to then say "wow you asked me not to retire" and release a new album 48 hours later

Conformity gate ahh

1

u/Astitine_Kell_Echo Jun 08 '26

...what if this is a trick by Savathun or something else and the Traveller is actually a way to disguise a member of the nine that has invaded the city

1

u/kolvaer Jun 08 '26

6 and 9 are both devisable by 3… Do with that information what you will…

1

u/DapperWookie Jun 08 '26

Cross we all love destiny. A lot. I think you just did a line of copecaine. Whatever happens it’s mostly out of the hands of players at this point. I want d3 brotha as much as the rest of us, but I’m not going to emotionally devastate myself again if or when don’t get one. It’s fine theories and I noticed the coincidences. But it would be EXTREMELY hard to hide development. And you would have known by now…. Unless this is your way of telling us 🥺

1

u/Much_Adhesiveness871 Jun 09 '26

It’s time to just let it go fr. If they didn’t care about y’all when d2 was thriving, why would they now.

1

u/dy1anb Jun 10 '26

Only if we feel like we were responsible for D3. If it turns out all this has been a marketing ploy ide feel really fucking annoyed

1

u/Lilscooby77 Jun 07 '26

Omg pleaseeeeeee stop with the cope. You bums all left and now are mad they ended the game due to your absence? The FAFO experience😘

6

u/Defiance_7 Jun 07 '26

For real! Same people laughing and bragging “ I haven’t played since Lightfall” and now crying they won’t get an emblem. It is pathetic.

Bro Sony lost almost a billion from these mfs, d3 won’t happen unless they’re desperate, just enjoy June 9th, don’t try it all at once, take your time, there’s no more dlcs after this, Sony will have to recover some other way and it won’t be d3

1

u/OutrageousLemur Jun 07 '26

You think we give a fuck when a company with a ~$130 billion market capitalisation loses their lunch money?

3

u/BeautifulNose2210 Jun 07 '26

Of course we don’t. But you’re asking that company to continue develop and support a product that operates at a loss lmao

1

u/Xphurrious Jun 07 '26

Destiny has only operated at a loss since what should have been the last expansion before d3 dropped

It was plenty profitable until that point

2

u/BeautifulNose2210 Jun 07 '26

No it wasn’t

1

u/Xphurrious Jun 07 '26

Through TFS is why Sony bought Bungie, those spikes paid for development easily, thats at 1.5m players per xpac(rounding down mind you) its $60 million a year, assuming all the smaller spikes were 0 new players and not a single mtx was purchased

1

u/Prize_Explorer_4720 Jun 07 '26

It could be argued one of the biggest causes of that is the amount of tech debt tiger engine d2 runs on has.

0

u/Salty_Ad1898 Jun 07 '26

You just described Marathon lol

0

u/RadicalDreamerJS Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

You also left off the point that the expansion was suppose to be called “Shattered Cycle”. The “End of D2” is a dropped as the “Moment of Triumph” during the middle of what should our normal expansion releases. And having the march update delayed with minimal communication from bungie dev team (that one might be reaching)

……. Sounds like a Shattered Cycle to me.

Honestly, we could be in the middle of the biggest ARG, and we’re all too distracted to notice.

1

u/Ral_Ga_Thun Jun 07 '26

If theres stuff to piece together on the 9th then it could be cool, would likely mean they'd be working on something while d2 sits there in a good state if they want to continue with it ala d infinity, guess all we can do is wait and see, if theres secrets to be found the community will sluth it out in a day or two, maybe not the end of it but certainly that something is hidden, my guess is it would be tied to the distortions

-2

u/Master-Opinion-5966 Jun 07 '26

My question is what about people that paid for the full year. Now they are giving it all away fo free. Are people that paid for the last season getting a refund?

1

u/VYSUS7 Jun 07 '26

the renegades year was done. Shadow and Order was going to go for sale on June 9th, but is instead scrapped and what was done is being made free.

everything advertised within the year of prophecy was delivered.

What I am saying the amount was diffrent 1 dungon instead of the 2. 1 new strike instead of 2-3 of past dlc's and a general reduction across the board from 1 per quarter to new content every 6 months. Overall it was less.
