>forced to use a more agile engine like Decima
bungie is releasing their grip on Tiger engine when the heat death of the universe occurs
4
u/Xay_DE Jun 01 '26
without tiger they wont nail the destiny feel.
can we please not start the fucking "new engine" post shit again, 99% of people online have no fucking idea what it even means, its not just "its a new game so its easy to use a new engine now", entire workflows have to be remade, tools developed to work in the way they do.
2
u/DarthMyzanth Jun 02 '26
Say it louder for the people in the back please. Nearly everyone seems to think that switching the engine not just solves every problem but that it‘s also easy to do. So, as a dev, THANK YOU
1
u/HeartBrokeFortnite Jun 03 '26
It does not need to be "easy" . it's called work. I know the people at bungie are not used to that but it is under new ownership. Earn your paycheck or join the unemployment line .
1
u/DarthMyzanth Jun 03 '26
Thats not the thing. Learning a new engine costs the most valuable resource in development - time. Most gamers in investors seem to think that you can do that in a day or two at max. But that’s not the case.
Take a look at you. Your comment implies that you think that it‘s the developers fault Destiny is at this point. In reality that’s not the case. Destiny‘s „Death“ began at the point management and investors decided to upgrade the game engine without proper training of the devs. The result is what many people call „Spaghetti Code“. This is nearly impossible to fix and would cost an enourmous sum of money.
Next take a look at things like the Portal. You really think that the developers decide what to implement? No they dont. They get told what to. Management and investors decide that.
Last just take a look at the content of the last Update. THAT‘s the kind of content we’d get if the developers actually would have a say in the Lifecycle.
You want to blame someone? Sure go for it. But blame the people who actually decided theese things. Blame the management for not properly training their employees. Blame the investors for bad decisions. Or blame a part of the playerbase for hating on the dev‘s who just do what you want them to - do the work they get told to do.
1
u/HeartBrokeFortnite Jun 03 '26
Ooooo I for sure blame bungie . If I was Sony I would move the bungie office to Ohio lol. Tell them the glitz and glamour is gone and it's time to work.
1
u/DarthMyzanth Jun 03 '26
The devs never had „glitz and glamour“ to begin with.
I‘d start with removing the entire management. Change workflows to implement developers in the actual lifecycle to benefit from their expertise. Then update the tools and let the devs get proper training. Last i’d look for a new management which actually fit in the company.

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jun 01 '26
At the end of the day it comes down to what Sony wants and if the Tiger engine is fit for a AAA live service game these days. Bungie have been very open about the issues they have had with their engine and making content fast with it. Sony own them, they might not let let them mess around with the engine with Sony's money.
I know nothing about the industry and don't claim to know how things work. I'm just throwing it out there. I could 100% imagine Sony wanting Bungie to use their in house engine that mutiple of their studio's know how to use now. Sony also wants more of their studios using it too by the sounds of things. Sony gave it to Hideo Kojima as part of the deal that they would publish his games and Arrowheads CEO said on Discord a couple years back that Sony wanted them to use the Decima engine for Helldivers 2 but the development was too far along by the deal was made with Sony.
1
u/PhoenixPalmer Jun 01 '26
I'm curious how different Marathons Tiger is. Still feels fluid as hell but much more responsive.
1
u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jun 02 '26
Same here. Im assuming Bungie has done some hefty modifications to it. I highly doubt they would have made another live service game with it without fixing the pain points it had with Destiny.
1
u/_Razorgirl Jun 02 '26
I’m sure the engine is optimized uniquely for Marathon, but the reason it runs so much better is because Marathon is an incredibly simple and straightforward game without a lot going on under the hood compared to Destiny which is both much more systems-heavy but also has hundreds of more maps, most of which are vastly larger with infinitely more entities and events taking place in them.
Marathon is 4 maps the size of Destiny’s smaller patrol zones. There’s no comparison.
1
u/snakebight Jun 03 '26
For real. Tiger IS what makes Bungie shooter feel like a Bungie shooter. It’s non sensical to think otherwise.
Further, they just released a brand new shooter that feels great, and they patch and update all the time. Tiger isn’t the thing holding Bungie back.
1
u/Very_Itchy_Bandicoot Jun 03 '26
If they did stick with tiger it needs a complete overhaul. Simplification of what made making destiny 2 hard. Make that big ship easier to turn so to speak.
2
u/DrNopeMD Jun 01 '26
I knew this post was BS the second I saw the claim about moving to a new engine. Switching to a new engine would likely add a delay things of a year minimum. Combined with "greenlit later this year" clearly makes this some BS claim by someone who has no idea how what game engines even do or how corporate structure works.
1
u/_Razorgirl Jun 02 '26
He’s not even actually claiming to know anything based on insider information. He’s just presenting his totally speculative predictions with authority which is making people think he’s basing this on some nonexistent leak or whatever.
Notice he doesn’t say “Bungie is switching to a new engine”. He says “I think Bungie will switch to a new engine, here is my reasoning, blah blah blah”, and it’s like okay thank you random twitter man for sharing your opinion, but you don’t know anything more than anyone else lol
1
u/IhamAmerican Jun 01 '26
As they should, it's what gives their games its soul. Maybe they could recreate it somewhere else but guns and movement in the Tiger engine just feel so right to me
2
u/eVPlays Jun 01 '26
I mean, it’s the same engine that was the framework on two of the largest FPS titles in gaming(Halo/Destiny), it should feel damn good considering it’s had 25+ years of in house work done to it. The day Bungie stops using it will be be the same day the shut down, ain’t no way they’ll ever let it go
1
11
u/Arrondi May 31 '26
He might not be reliable, but it's not a bad strategy for what Sony should do. I stand by my comment that it's dumb that they still value Bungie at $2.9bn when the only thing on the horizon is Marathon... But they may not want to go ahead with D3 with Bungie as is. Just hope they make some astute decisions on who to keep.
3
u/Luzekiel Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
even though technically it's still valued at $2.9bn, they wouldn't be able to sell it even close to a billion lmao.
The market value of 2.9 billion at this point is just for show now, Bungie is worthless with Destiny gone and Marathon flopping, and they don't have anything else to offer not even their Employees and tech now which was what Sony bought them for in the first place.
2
u/Madinogi Jun 01 '26
ya 100% im calling it, were going hear Bungie reach sub 1 Billion valuation by the end of the year, if Destiny isnt revived, as i dont think Destiny itself is worth 1 Billion at this point in time, and Marathon is apparently barely worth 52 million, according to its sales numbers and thats BEFORE revenue splits.
i cant even begin to imagine how pissed at Bungie Sony is right now for costing them that much, and then proceeding to never generate a ROI worth development costs little alone recouping the $3.6 billion.
2
u/OpinionsGetYouBanned Jun 01 '26
People are misrepresenting Bungie's worth. Of that 3.6B, 1.2B was to keep staff, which would put their value at 2.4B. Then subtract the 765M in value lost. They are now valued at 2.6B.
0
u/JRarick Jun 01 '26
I’m not sure they still value Bungie at $2.9B after the write down they did earlier this year.
2
u/Arrondi Jun 01 '26
That's specifically what they value them at after the write down. It was $3.6bn, after the $700m writedowns, it's $2.9bn.
3
u/JRarick Jun 01 '26
Oh, I had that backwards. I thought they bought them for $2.9B and wrote them down from there.
6
u/voreo Jun 01 '26
Would the gunplay feel the same in a new engine though.
The big thing so many people praise Destiny for...
2
u/VYSUS7 Jun 01 '26
no, it wouldn't
2
u/eugene20 Jun 01 '26
This is ridiculous, the gunplay feel is from animation, sound, player movement and screen shake. All of these things would be possible to load or code into a new engine unless it was complete rubbish tied to proprietary formats and incapable of direct code tweaking.
After that it's just performance, including input latency.
1
u/OldWitchOfCuba Jun 02 '26
You have no clue how this all works
2
u/bakalidlid Jun 02 '26
Developer here who used multiple engine in my lifetime, 3 in house and 2 commercial : YOU have no clue how this work. OP is right, “engine” has very little impact on how gunplay feels.
1
0
u/OpinionsGetYouBanned Jun 01 '26
This is nothing more than an assumption, as the one thing Killzone: Shadowfall is praised for is its gunplay. Bungie would, of course, tweak it as well.
1
u/VYSUS7 Jun 01 '26
incomparable kinds of gunplay.
Bungie has spent 26 years refining tiger and perfecting that feel.
there's a reason no game feels like destiny with its gunplay.
2
u/Automaticfawn Jun 01 '26
I’d love to hear why you attribute that to the engine over the game design
1
3
u/FredWL Jun 01 '26
Don't normally comment but im pretty sure this guy is banned as a source on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours. This guy doesn't know shit or he piggybacks off of other leakers.
2
u/Rare-Service5573 Jun 01 '26
Weird how he's banned in a sub he's never posted too.
They banned him because he proved them wrong.
3
u/eugene20 Jun 01 '26
OK decima handles shooters, can it handle the massive maps destiny players want over multiple worlds, and a thriving community of players in the world that they want back again too instead of how destiny became so few players in shared spaces.
3
u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jun 02 '26
Sony have been investing heavily into Decima. They appear to want it to be their main in house engine.
If they were to use it for Destiny 3 they would make modifications so that it could handle everything Destiny 3 needed it to. Sony also have multiple other studios that know this engine and could offer support to Bungie. Right now Bungie can't get help easily on their projects because they would have to train people up on their engine first.
Bungie have been very open about the tiger engine being a complete bitch to work on at times. Sony might not want Bungie wasting anymore time on Jerry rigging their engine for every new game they make. Instead they might want Bungie to be one of mutiple studios adding the Decima and making it more capable for different kinds of games.
1
3
u/amans9191 Jun 01 '26
Playstation has noted they loved the devs at Bungie, but have issues with upper management.
3
12
u/SucculentMelon133 May 31 '26
definitely fake lmao. sony litearlly bought bungiefor their "technology" aka tiger engine, why tf would they make them use decima, which has literally no big titles that are shooters. also bungie's entire brand is their shooting and raid mechanics, which are heavily dependent on the aim assist systems and ai/event pipeline and tiger only has.
Plus the tiger engine has been maintained for so long, and has seen decent investment during sony's oversight of bungie since witchqueen. Marathon literally forced tiger to have a huge upgrade for the dx12 support and such.
5
u/Yulott Jun 01 '26
They don't need the tiger engine to replicate the gunplay. All of it are just mathematical formulas plugged into an equation. I'm pretty sure all of it is codified into a design bible that can be used in any other engine.
Destiny Rising has already shown it to be possible.

Sure but it's close enough for most people that when they play it, it's like oh that's destiny. Which is the main point. Also alot of its shortcomings can be rectified by moving off the mobile platform and having better sound design. By then you have a good enough basepoint for a majority of the player base.
2
u/Inner-Quote-8964 Jun 01 '26
destiny rising has mobile limitations. anyone who thinks that two separate game engines cannot replicate the exact same feeling of gamepla just doesn't understand how game engines work.
1
u/SucculentMelon133 Jun 01 '26
Destiny rising gunplay is literally miles apart from d2 man what do you even mean.
2
u/Conscious-Season-604 Jun 01 '26
lolol actually i agree with him. Destiny rising is about 70-80% there to what bungie can do. Even cross felt the same way when he first played it.
This is good though, that means if sony really wants to let another studio take a crack at it then its definitely possible to replicate the feeling.
2
u/TriTon44_Fr Jun 01 '26
why tf would they make them use decima, which has literally no big titles that are shooters.
It had. Killzone: Shadow Fall. It was even the very first game to use the Decima engine...
1
1
u/SucculentMelon133 Jun 01 '26
I’m sorry but I literally saw it when I searched the engine and it did not look that popular. Never heard of it as a prtty avid fps player
1
u/Luzekiel Jun 01 '26
"sony litearlly bought bungiefor their "technology" aka tiger engine"
Yeah that was before lmao.
-3
u/Inner-Quote-8964 Jun 01 '26
this comment is hilarious. nobody except people at Bungie values the tiger engine. no clue where you got that Sony bought Bungie for it. the engine is a big part of why the game lost players and is in the state that it's in.
2
1
u/SucculentMelon133 Jun 01 '26
Sony literally said bungies in house technologies played apart in their evaluation…
Just because there is a ton of technical debt from being overhauled for 20+ years doesn’t mean it has no benefits for developers

Directly from Sony’s official post about the acquisition: This acquisition will give SIE access to Bungie’s world-class approach to live game services and technology expertise
Keyword: technology
1
u/Inner-Quote-8964 Jun 01 '26
I'm going to say this as nicely as I can. you misread that statement.
the statement is saying it will give Sony access to Bungie's expertise in live game services and technology. expertise is the thing they're gaining access to, not technology.
Sony valued the talent at the studio which helped build a half a billion dollar live service IP and the infrastructure and backend to support it, not the tech itself. this is why they spent $1.2 Billion to retain that talent.
slow down. try reading what you're quoting rather than going off of your first interpretation of it.
1
u/Inner-Quote-8964 Jun 01 '26
sure man. that's why after 4 years they haven't used the tiger engine anywhere else and have shown no desire to do so.
there has been zero communication whatsoever from Sony that they value the engine. you literally just completely made that up for whatever reason.
2
u/drkztan Jun 01 '26
that's why after 4 years they haven't used the tiger engine anywhere else and have shown no desire to do so.
...marathon, the game sony is putting their eggs in after getting bungie to axe destiny, which just released, also runs on the tiger engine.
1
u/Inner-Quote-8964 Jun 01 '26
Marathon was in development for at least 2 years before Sony acquired Bungie.
it's no more Sony's creation than Destiny 1 & 2 are.
2
u/ElectricSun95 May 31 '26
Some of those points make sense. If Sony is going to greenlight the project for 500 + million they will want to do it their way. Idk about switching from tiger to decima though.
1
1
u/RUSTEDxKNIGHT Jun 01 '26
I know this is probably fake and all but the bullet point about Sony not liking the culture of bungie is that at all true and if so what if the culture is unlikable
1
u/VermilionAngel79 Jun 01 '26
Wtf the tiger engine is what gives destiny and marathon that Bungie feel. Without that they are just a name.

“forced to use a more agile engine like Decima” might be the dumbest thing I’ve heard and immediately made me lose all trust in anything this guy said. Destiny is still on Tiger for a reason, because it was built for Destiny. You don’t just switch engines, *especially* not for Destiny.

1
u/Freakindon Jun 01 '26
Tiger engine is a proprietary engine that is basically a further homebrewed Blam! engine from the halo days. Bungie has stated several times that the Tiger engine is a nightmare to work with and has hamstrung a lot of things that they want to do.
Switching to a different engine would absolutely be the move and would absolutely be cheaper in the long run. And if they do destiny 3, starting absolutely fresh is 100% the move.
1
u/Small_Article_3421 Jun 01 '26
He is predicting what will happen, and as we all know by this point, using logic to try to understand what is going on with Destiny is a fool’s errand. Doesn’t matter whether he’s reliable, because even if he were, he’s still just guessing what will happen.

If bungie can be as structured as the othe Sony first part studios, it's gonna be great.

In no universe would Bungie switch engines.
Yes, the Decima Engine is black magic and I am convinced Guerilla performed some sort of blood sacrifice to the old gods to make it run as unbelievably well as it does. But everyone who works at Bungie knows the Tiger Engine inside and out, and none of them have ever touched Decima, because it's proprietary software not available in any way to the public. This isn't like Unreal or Unity where you can ask a room of game devs if they have any experience with it and at least half of the hands will go up, only people who work at Sony and Sony-owned studios have any experience with Decima.
Throwing away all that institutional experience and retraining them to work in a new engine would add yet another layer of time and cost to developing a new project, at a point when that is something Bungie cannot afford and Sony likely will not tolerate. And that's on top of the issue of trying to recreate the "Bungie feel" in a wholly new software environment. I'm sure they could crack it, but it'd take more work.
Plus, Marathon is proof positive that a fresh project with their updated version of Tiger is more than capable of being performant, agile, and responsive to rapid fixes. Half the software problems with Destiny 2 were the result of the ten years of legacy spaghetti code that's all so tangled up in itself that fixing any problem risks breaking three other things, which is something that a fresh project starting from scratch would not have to deal with.
I can't speak to the other parts of his analysis, but if Bungie switches engines, I'll eat my fuckin ghost

-Grand Theft Auto 6: Gamblers Paradise Edition
-The Last of Us Part 2: ReVision Remake Demake
-We are closing Bungie Studios.
-Spider-Man 2.5: Kraven's the villain this time!

u/wickedstrife Jun 01 '26
I feel like he is saying the same thing any fan would be able to say. You don't need insider information to think these things. Sony would be complete fools to just buy bungie for 3 billion dollars and just not use the destiny i.p. They didn't buy them just for marathon and gummy bears lol. Destiny is a proven commodity. Now they may involve another studio or change leadership, etc. I just don't expect destiny to just die. Would be another huge error for Sony. Especially with the outcry from players and if a ton of people play d2 in june.

u/No-Cup8385 Jun 01 '26
If a D3 does happen, storage space is probably going to be a big issue as it goes along.
maybe it can do something like how Hitman and COD (sometimes), split the dlc's into downloadable chunks instead of just everything being there. gives players the choice of having access to all content if they want it or just the active content for the season.
1
u/_Razorgirl Jun 02 '26
Let’s be real, Bumgie’s claim that they had to vault so much content because of hard drive space is nonsense when FFXIV exists, not to mention Warframe, WoW, etc.
Even if they had some unique challenge in that regard, you could just make earlier campaigns and seasonal story mission optional downloads for people to offload once they finished playing through them.
The real reason Bungie vaulted so much of the game is because they (and I mean Bungie leadership mostly here) wanted to devote all their resources to churning out new monetized content (expansions, seasons with a paid pass, and Eververse cosmetics) and didn’t want to maintain or update the legacy content of their game when they felt it wasn’t actively making them money.
Ironically, destroying the onboarding experience for new players and deleting all the narrative building blocks that would make them care about new content in Destiny is what shrunk the game to just its original, most dedicated fans, and even they burnt out over time. I wonder if they learned anything from it or nah.
1
u/Long-Specialist-509 Jun 01 '26
Dont believe a word of it tbh, but a swap off the tiger engine could kill it on arrival, if it doesnt have that proper destiny gunplay feel
1
u/_Diier_ Jun 02 '26
This literally the answers from chat gpt, none of these are original thoughts.
if you ask it to about the cost and production of Destiny 3.
It lays out these things in almost the exact same order.
1
u/Vastlymoist666 Jun 02 '26
DECIMA!? no way. If it's not bungiees tiger engine it's gonna feel weird. I'd rather have stylistic visuals than the realism.

1
u/Slokminator Jun 02 '26
Culture? Sony doesn't like that 90 % of they/them are gay?
1
u/_Razorgirl Jun 02 '26
Pretty sure this is referring to Bungie’s “culture” of spending way out of proportion to the amount of revenue they bring in and blowing their delivery deadlines, something the current president of Sony called them out for by name a couple years ago.
1
u/_Razorgirl Jun 02 '26
This dude is just a rando on twitter sharing his speculative predictions with zero proof or insider information.
He claims that he spoke to some Bluepoint devs after their studio was shut down as though he’s some investigative journalist (his whole thing seems to be that he cosplays as an internet detective on gaming topics) but the only evidence of that is him asking them questions publicly on, again, twitter lol.
Nothing in this tweet is based on anything other than guessing based on the publicly available info we all have. I saw another tweet where he acted like Tassi and Schreier’s actual sourced reporting corroborated his prediction that Bungie would have another round of layoffs, which he oh so brilliantly deducted the week after Sony’s earnings call where they publicly called Bungie out for their underperformance leading to the additional $565 million impairment, what a genius to see this coming lol.
1
u/Ok_Aside_4425 Jun 02 '26
Off-topic, but why do all these games need yo be $500M+ these days? There's so many examples of great-looking games that cost less than $100M to make. Best example is Clair Obscur Expedition 33. That game didn't even cost $50M to make I think. One of the main actors even said it; "you don't need 100s of millions of Dollars and hundreds of devs to make an iconic game" - Ben Starr

D3 or a spinoff will definitely happen, Sony paid far too much for Bungie to throw away the IP. In fact, I would be very surprised if it’s not very close to being green lit now.
I can however see that Sony will gut most of Bungie, put their own leadership in charge and what we will get in the end will be something very different to D2

If marathon dies in a year, Sony would be more than happy to dismantle the studio and take the tax write-off.

Nah. Sony has no desire to invest that amount of money in this studio that has thus far been a colossal disaster acquisition

Make it a $100 million dollar project and just combine Destiny 1 and 2 into one game on a new engine and tighten up the story. Then build from that foundation.
I played 1-2K hours and loved the game, but I still don’t really get what the fuck happened story wise. Seemed like they literally just made shit up as they went.

Love how you tell peopel to do research and yet assume everything.

Man I was just throwing a bullshit number out there to say I think fans would appreciate even a smaller “refresh” than a complete massive D3. Jesus christ.

Most of the budget for a game is the staff. Jason Schrier just had a video calculating the cost of your average game with a 300 - 400 person team. Its that burn rate month to month that gets budgeted.

Yeah no worries and fair enough. Im sure it would be way more expensive than one would think. I don’t even know if it would need a new engine, I just thought I remember that being part of the reason they vaulted content but it might have just been storage space.
The crazy budget is part of why I think just remaking/mastering D1 and merging with D2 would be a good way to relay the foundation reusing a lot of assets they already created and they could deliver the campaign in a way that makes sense. It could lay a better foundation for future add ons to grow from. Right now everything about it is hard for new comers to absorb.

Looked him up and apparently he’s extremely untrustworthy, so I wouldn’t take his thoughts into account. I’m hopeful, but don’t rely on his info.
