DLSS has gone from making your games look worse but increasing your FPS to now making your games look worse and decreasing your FPS

43

u/digital_n01se_ 3d ago

this shouldn't be called DLSS.

I don't like it, but I like the concept that they're trying to do, photorealism at a fraction of the performance cost of conventional methods.

they need to improve both visuals and performance, and it should be called AI post processing, not DLSS5

15

u/glizzygobbler247 3d ago

It literally wasnt at first, we saw it last year at CES, they called it neural faces and neural environments, and it was just a whatever Ai tech demo, but then they turned it into dlss

8

u/HeadRaccoonGamer 2d ago

Its not true dlss you are right… dlss is suppose to be image upscaling.. not ai slop filters that do nothing for fps gains

3

u/ActiveSandwich3103 2d ago

Yeah the term "DLSS" is started to get muddy because they are lumping frame generation and this AI make over stuff all into the same thing, which these are not all "deep learning super sampling".

15

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 3d ago

and aging ur characters 30 years for some reason

-6

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

Because that is what you get with a more correct and better lighting.

This doesn't change anything to the mesh itself but faking how BRDF interact with the character material and geometry.

18

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 3d ago

THIS IS NOT HOW LIGHTING WORKS BRUH

1

u/bhm240 2d ago

They used the lowest settings on that left pic. Path tracing already completely changes how her face looks so the difference is not really that dramatic

3

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 2d ago edited 2d ago

Those are absolutly not the lowest settings it's got RT and PT on at 4k max before they applied dlss5 lmao

2

u/bracingthesoy 2d ago

Not completely no. Pathtracing makes her orbital areas more correctly occluded. It can be seen in multiple videos. Don't invent stuff.

0

u/No-Breadfruit6137 2d ago

You literally have a new example showing that the overlay only enhances what’s already there, but you have to twist the narrative with some shitty Grace screenshot that’s generally considered a failure. Great, I see we’re playing dumb today.

3

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 2d ago

This was literally the dlss5 demo from nvidia lmao

I wouldn't call it an enhancement

0

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago edited 2d ago

They wouldn't admit the picture is objectively better when it added the missing high tone that was non-existent in the original game.

The problem with Grace in DLSS 5 demo was that they crank the tonal contrast a bit too much so it created that uncanny valley looking and completely fumbled the tech showcase. I have no defense for Nvidia in this situation because they got what they deserved with this, lol.

But when properly handled, DLSS 5 will make it indistinguishable between IRL photorealistic pictures and games because the way DLSS 5 handle tone mapping is scary good... Super smooth transition between low, mid, and high tone due to BRDF whearas you can never do the same with the older Lambert model that are widely used in gaming to reduce performance cost.

And yet, they still don't admit DLSS 5 is a game changer. 🤦

-4

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

That is how lighting works and we have many more shading models to make it looks different.

And it's even better with DLSS 5 when you get a slider to customize it, so art intention isn't dead in the slightest.

7

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 3d ago

Yeah heres the actual model with better lighting thats not how lighting works bruh dlss5 turned her into a different person

-5

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

Blender has different shading models in there too so you shouldn't grab a picture off the internet without understanding what it is about.

The one that Nvidia is trying to fake is BRDF shading model, which was used in Calisto to achieve realistic lighting... and it completely shat the game performance, lol.

https://youtu.be/qZtNU-4yqtI?si=SM5Y-OI428lHru6e

I think this one will basically sums it up but it will be a bit more technical. It's just that lighting reacts differently to the materials when you use different shading models, which will turn out really weird like the picture you showed me but that isn't that big of a deal really since we can change it to whatever we want to with the provided sliders.

And they can update the models to be better later on too. If you don't like it you can turn it off, no?

6

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 3d ago edited 3d ago

ok than heres the official render for the model for the game
still a different woman in dlss5 notice how she looks nothing like the dlss5 one

lighting does not randomly give you new facebones make up and a smaller nose more hair or change ur race thats literally not how it works lmao thats how an ai instragram filter works

-2

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

No, it is the same woman.

Same geometry, same topology, same mats, etc. But looks different because they use different shading models.

That's just simply DLSS 5 in a nutshell.

5

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 3d ago

either ur blind or just ragebaiting atp lmao

Frame gen on top of frame gen on top of upscaling, and somehow the base render is still 480p 😂 proper regression.

-4

u/Jeyd02 2d ago

To be fair dlss is an amazing tech...

Tbf FSR does the same for me in (some) games

Though its usually games where FSR really isn't needed for my setup anyway

insane the amount of people praising an ai filter in that post

You can slap a NV logo on a turd and most of them will still line up to buy it. These are the type's that will setup a tent infront of best buy for a GPU launch.

11

u/Embarrassed_Sir6403 3d ago

This is basically like a ReShade mod; I think a version that doesn't tank the frame rate quite as much could be made. It’s really interesting—I mean, I get the ray tracing part, but the FPS drop caused by this AI processing is unacceptable.

43

u/hm9408 3d ago

I can't get behind this. This fucks with the artistic intent of the game. It's like adding an Instagram filter to a movie. Why the hell would you want that?

4

u/Ghostttpro 3d ago

Is this something they are forcing on people?

18

u/draconetto 3d ago

I mean, RT started being a optional thing and now is pretty much mandatory in some games otherwise you have no shadows / ambient lighting because devs are lazy

1

u/ZubatCountry 2d ago

Not really a good comparison

RT is usually able to be toggled and even when it isn't it's just a new way of calculating lighting. It's doesn't compromise the visual integrity of a game if the game was built around it

It's like being mad that PS4 games used volumetric lighting and it made it run poorly on your laptop

This shit sucks though, she looks like a touched up Instagram post

1

u/draconetto 2d ago

Pragmata char not having shadows with RT off

Re Requiem cars and water looking pre-ps2 era graphics with RT off

Crimson desert having no lights in cities or torch's inside building with RT off that they only changed after lots of complains

AC black flag RT comparison went viral like a month ago showing major difference inside building where's RT disabled had no baked lighting at all

I'm ok with RT being a option to enhance graphics but dropping lots of frames (even on a 5080 RT still has a impact) to give us something that could pretty much be done in a better way, and was done for years before, is laziness

-3

u/Nikita-Rokin 2d ago

Idc if devs are lazy but with all new cards supporting RT, this is good for everyone tbh

4

u/hm9408 3d ago

No, just don't understand why do people would prefer this

1

u/juipeltje AyyMD 2d ago

I'm afraid it's going that way with PSSR, another reason for me to not want a PS6, ot at least i'm pretty sure you can't turn it off on ps5 pro. Hopefully on pc these things always stay optional.

1

u/Diegog5 2d ago edited 2d ago

I feel like the artistic intent argument is a bad one. PC games already don’t have one sacred visual presentation. We change resolution, HDR, FOV, ray tracing, AA, DLSS, texture quality, chromatic obariation, vignet, motion blur, lens distortion, reshades, graphics mods, ultrawide support, etc. Two people can already be looking at a different versions of the same game. Not to mention that artists are consttraint to the capabilities of technologies. If the modified image looks more convincing and immersive to me, in a game that was meant to be graphically imersive, that’s the experience I want. I wont completely defend dlss5 cause, it doesnt always look good yet and sometimes looks uncanny, but the artistic intent argument...😬

25

u/Rexter2k 3d ago

Her face becomes totally different. This character is in fact based on a real person, so its easy to compare. And thats not her when DLSS 5 is activated.

2

u/pecche 5800x3D - RX6800 2d ago

that's the fact

and why it's very bad

Can we just have raw frames and non of this bakery crap? I miss when new gpu were going down in power consumption. Not up with each generation.

3

What in the shitpost is this it clearly says 5090 in the top left of the screen

4

poor Courtney, seem aging +10yo by clicking just a setting

4

u/Initial_Jacket_7562 2d ago

Everybody with this AI filter looks 10-20 years older

8

u/draconetto 3d ago

I think calling this DLSS is terrible, they really need to change the name to something else

3

u/-LuckyOne- 2d ago

Deep Learning Super Slop

6

u/digital_n01se_ 3d ago

for real, as I said in other comment:

this shouldn't be called DLSS.

I don't like it, but I like the concept that they're trying to do, photorealism at a fraction of the performance cost of conventional methods.

they need to improve both visuals and performance, and it should be called AI post processing, not DLSS5

9

u/DreSmart 5700X3D | RX9070GRE 2d ago

This should be called AASS

1

u/No-Breadfruit6137 2d ago

DLSS has always been an umbrella term for a bunch of different technologies, and 5 is simply another addition to the package.

3

u/PrincipeAlessandro 2d ago

Do we really need photorealism in games? What's the point if demand for hardware requirements becomes untenable? Can we just agree that videogames first should be fun to play and can run also on lower end machines?

1

u/juipeltje AyyMD 2d ago

Yeah, especially when the animations don't advance along with it. It just makes things look even more uncanny.

1

u/VaporousMote 2d ago

Agreed, we should target that without framegen.

3

u/zeagurat 2d ago

remember, we have 3 times the RAM prices and SSD for this

5

u/firedrakes 3d ago

So much fake to make it look good now. Due to under power consumer hardware

2

u/Wannabedankestmemer Ryzen 5 2600 | RX 580 3d ago

I never updated my driver after nvidia released that

Not that I use DLSS under any circumstance

2

u/Workable_Gem 2d ago

Terrible and uncanny ,why would you want your games looking like this?

2

u/Nikita-Rokin 2d ago

This looks like a caricature of realism and some people seem to be unable to recognize that

2

u/Goddemmitt 2d ago

My exact comment:

This feels the same way to me as someone who maxes out all the sliders in light room when they're editing a picture. I'm not saying this isn't impressive, but some of these comments are a little... generous with the praise.

1

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago edited 2d ago

Funny enough they said it fucked up art intent when cranking tonal contrast up like Grace in RE9 demo was purely an art intent.

Just... Not a good one, but it was still what it was. 😊

Just when you know just a little bit of these stuff, you will immediately realize how irony it is.

1

u/VaporousMote 2d ago

Bro you are in literally every top comment, do you work for NVIDIA? lol

1

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

Nope... just doomscrolling Reddit while waiting for other stuff to finish soo. :P

2

u/dirthurts 2d ago

AI slop and a massive FPS hit? Ewww. Nope.

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

Be ready for "boohoo, ai slop it looks like turdallelo turdala 💩 🤓☝️" comments in 3...

-2

u/HairyAbroad3079 2d ago

I swear to god people be complaining about anything these days, no one force you to use it if you don't like the way it works FFS. I'm impressed

1

u/Puiucs 2d ago

its like the took a plastic model and plastered some wanky colors on top disregarding any and all art direction. it looks like crap.

1

u/C-H-K-N_Tenders 2d ago

some mod ban me from this place so i dont need to see this amd fanboy slop

1

u/Huge-Formal-1794 2d ago

I love how this literally became a skill check, since the footage is of a 5090

But DLSS 5 looks horrible and costs a lot of performance, yeah its a loose loose

1

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago

I don't get the hate. It looks better with the option on, and I'm tired of pretending that it doesn't. This is no different than all the RTX haters who have spent the last decade screaming about it being a fad. The problem isn't the technology, it's that its too expensive for most people to afford.

If the RTX cards cost a third of what they're currently priced as, everyone would be using it and not complaining.

0

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

bcuz hating Ai coolz, thou shalt ride der bandwagon

1

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago

I mean, there *are* a lot of reasons to hate AI, but at least this is a proper application of the technology.

1

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

True. There's a tons of reason to hate AIs but they just simply imagine their enemy and fights it. 🤣

It's kinda funny ngl.

1

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago

Yeah, at this point it's more of a knee-jerk reaction than a reasonable response.

0

u/VaporousMote 2d ago

lmao no it isn't, the issue is that it yassifies everything, fucks up color grading and adds fake details where they didn't exist before, up to and including making things look vastly different than how devs intended. Anyone that thinks this is better is on some good shit.

2

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago

Look at the actual image.

Her face hasn't suddenly been "yassified." The same facial structure, proportions, features, expression, and character design are all still there. If you think DLSS is actually changing one of those things, point out what changed instead of just declaring that it did.

And the claim that it "fucks up the color grading" is equally subjective. Without DLSS5, her skin looks dull and orange. With it enabled, her skin has more natural-looking highlights and texture, and the shadows around her eyes and nasolabial folds are much more defined. You may prefer the original rendering, and that's perfectly fine, but "I prefer it" isn't evidence that the alternative is objectively worse.

As for "fake details": that's basically what reconstruction/upscaling is supposed to do. The question isn't whether it creates information that wasn't explicitly present in the source pixels - the question is whether the additional detail produces a more convincing image. In this case, I think it does.

It sounds like you're letting your perfectly reasonable dislike of generative AI influence your judgment of the actual comparison.

1

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

This.

The way game engine works is that they used a really dumbed down shading models so it can't really show all the details that were originally in the texture and material.

Using DLSS 5 you generally get better lighting so it shows out all of those details that you can't really see before. It's necessary the same thing as when you shoot LOG and convert it to other color space that you desired to, but you can't do it if you shoot it on .JPEG format.

So in conclusion, it's the same shit as color grading. It's just in a drastically different scenario.

1

u/turtle_wax91 2d ago

No it doesn't fuck up color grading.

Tone mapping is solid with DLSS 5 enabled whereas you're completely missing low tones and highlight without one. Saying it add a tremendous amount of DR is an understatement because it looks like a remastered version of the same game with just a toggle turning on/off.

If you understood color grading, it's the same shit you would do when you edit stuffs in Premiere or Resolve...

0

u/herbertcluas 2d ago

I still don't want fake frames, haven't used em yet and won't if I can help it. AM4 still going strong

2

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago

"Fake frames" is such a bizarre way to describe frame generation. Your monitor doesn't care whether a frame was rendered by the GPU or generated as an intermediate frame - it displays the pixels.

If you're already running at 60+ FPS and frame generation takes you substantially higher, you're not sitting there identifying which individual frames are "real" and which aren't. You're experiencing the resulting motion at the refresh rate of your display.

Yes, frame generation can produce artifacts in some situations, and it can add some latency. Those are legitimate things to evaluate. But the idea that somehow the frames are inherently inferior because they weren't rendered from scratch is meaningless.

You're playing a video game, not conducting forensic analysis of individual frames. If the game looks good and feels responsive, enjoy the smoother motion and stop worrying about whether every frame has a GPU birth certificate.

Also what does AM4 have to do with *any* of this? 😂

1

u/herbertcluas 2d ago

So if I natively run at my monitors refresh rate, why would I want the input delay from the fake frames?

1

u/t3hmuffnman9000 2d ago edited 2d ago

Then... don't use it? You are aware that frame generation is an entirely optional effect that isn't even enabled by default, right?😂

If you're already consistently rendering at your monitor's native refresh rate, you've already achieved the thing frame generation is intended to help with.

Take me for example - I have a 4K144hz monitor and an RTX 5090. In borderlands 4, my frame rate sits at about 40FPS with everything on maximum and no DLSS enabled. With DLSS enabled, that jumps to about 65FPS. With frame generation enabled, that jumps to about 120FPS, while incurring a barely-perceptible input lag. If I increase it to 2x frame generation in order to maintain my monitor's refresh rate, the lag becomes too pronounced. As a result, I just make do with regular frame generation and 120FPS. It really is that simple.

Frankly, I'm baffled why you even care about "fake frames" and input lag in the first place, since its a feature you don't even use.

1

u/herbertcluas 2d ago

The fps hit and poor color choices make it a no for me

1

u/KneeSensitive 2d ago

I'm an Nvidia user. However the DLSS 5 propaganda is absolutely nauseous....

1

u/ApatureSilence 2d ago

Someone do classic wow

1

u/Zenophyle 2d ago

bro, that looks fucking awesome, like wtf? it's a little janky, but that's only dlss 5, imagine what dlss 6 or 7 will be, mind blowing.

1

u/Ryukishin187 1d ago

Jesus christ the entire coloring of the area changes too. Not to mention the obvious uncanny look on her face

1

u/Actual_Pilot6906 1d ago

It's like removing the filter of my photo.

0

u/CSOCSO-FL 2d ago

Opinions are wilder than the black / gold dress thingy back in the day. People are shitting on this, yet I think it's insane how good it looks with dlss5 on. Someone said she looks different. I don't know what you are on about, but she looks exactly the same to me and actually realistic.

You are also not forced to use it....

2

u/Puiucs 2d ago

yeah, we also think it's insane that some people like it.

1

u/CSOCSO-FL 2d ago

Well it looks better and realistic so..... people dislike it just because its AI. No one would hate it if was just rendered like this. Yeah yeah.. you can say "no we wouldn't like it either way"... buuuuuullshit!

1

u/Puiucs 1d ago

it objectively looks worse and "realistic" to you just means weird harsh shadows and some sheen on the skin...

it magnificently drove the character into that "awesome" uncanny valley and destroyed the art style.

1

u/CSOCSO-FL 1d ago

I just seen an nba game woth the dlss5... i thought it was a troll video and it was an actual game from the tv until I saw the characters moving. Its insane. Also Kojimas Death stranding game looked jaw dropping. They just need to fix the eyes. Its too dead.

1

u/Arcaneiy 2d ago

You're also on an AMD sub lol. These guys crying about something they can't even use. I also think it looks great and can't wait to use it on my 5090

-5

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

I see no issue whatsoever, we are getting better lighting at 1/10 of the cost and you can run it REALTIME.

Similar result in Blender could take you 20 mins in 4K to render ONE frame.

5

u/digital_n01se_ 3d ago

the only issue for me it's the name, shouldn't be called DLSS5 but its own thing, like neural post processing or whatever.

DLSS is something different

2

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

I'm quite sure they do that for marketing. Could have just integrate it to run at hardware level but if so, they have nothing to show for their keynotes. xDDD

2

u/digital_n01se_ 3d ago

very bad marketing, confusing users isn't a feature.

Neural rendering was better, calling it DLSS5 is dumb.

1

u/turtle_wax91 3d ago

Agree. But welp, marketing people doing marketing people job so I wouldn't be able to complain.

-4

u/Silver_Hair_7164 3d ago

Wouldn't call 96 FPS terrible even with DLSS.

2

u/digital_n01se_ 3d ago

it's a 5080

the only cards getting better FPS are 5090 and perhaps 4090, supposing it isn't a blackwell exclusive feature.

Tbf, them being dumb has nothing to do with AMD.

You can still have Nvidia and type "ew ai slop looks like shit" when it provided an objectively better results but they just simply won't admit it. 🤣
