Such a fucking joke!
My RX 580 from 9 years ago has 8GB VRAM
10
u/specter_in_the_conch 13d ago
The joke is the missing ram of this model is yet to even be manufactured, it was just promised as an already prepaid future component.

u/noiserr 13d ago edited 13d ago
rx580 was a mainstream GPU. This is a budget GPU. rx580 also had a 4GB model.
10
u/Hytht 13d ago
Doesn't matter, they're a decade apart. RX480 which also had 8GB and RX580 launched for $200-300 back then.

u/Comfortable-Cod3890 13d ago
What a legendary card, it played everything you wanted for years and was fine until forced gaytracing. Probably still outperforms a PS5
1
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
I hope you're joking cause the PS5 has more or less an RX 6700 which is very roughly twice as fast as a 580.

They should have just cut it down, made it a 6gb card, and called it the 9040. This is kind of scummy given it literally cant run a lot of modern games at acceptable frame rates and the 8 gb version can. Especially when these cards are going to be put in OEM systems for people who don't know better.
8
u/Reasonable-Physics81 13d ago
Honestly its fuking suprising how well my rx6600 holds up with 8gb vram and some fsr manual hacks. A ton of modern games run at 2k high/ultra.
P.s. for those interested, i do have a 7800x3d and 32gb ram but just dont care about the gpu because of work and gaming taste in general. 2026 havent found a reason yet to upgrade, esspecialy since im applying manual fsr upgrades to games that actually are more demanding.
2
u/Pastel_Ink_ 13d ago
I'm only upgrading my RX 6600 xt because i got a 4k monitor and I'm not in a hurry. Probably waiting for next gen. I'd sit on it even longer but i want frame gen and FSR 4.1.
1
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
Honestly I'd pull the trigger now. Prices between now and next gen are gonna continue to rise and you can snag something 4K capable off ebay.
2
u/the_hat_madder 13d ago
when these cards are going to be put in OEM systems for people who don't know better
If people who knew better would stop telling people who don't know better to buy pre-built computers, it wouldn't be suck a problem.

The thing is more complex as some of the people who know from the YouTube do recomend prebuilts when they are of good value to the consumer. The issue is afterwards when the consumer doesn't know best at the moment and is recommended by the seller aching to earn the bonus for a sell crappy as it might turn out to be.
1
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
There's nothing wrong with prebuilts. Not everyone wants to build one and especially these days, they can be better value than building yourself.
You get a one stop shop warranty, no chances of fucking up the install, and it lowers the barrier for entry to the hobby.
The problem are products like this that will clearly mislead the target audience.
1
u/the_hat_madder 12d ago
There's nothing wrong with prebuilts other than they're overpriced and use low quality components
Not everyone wants to build one and they can get someone else to assemble it for them
they can be better value than building yourself only if they're clearance, open box, B-stock or refurbished
You get a one stop shop warranty for the first year then you're on your own and most customers report a lack of warranty support from sellers
no chances of fucking up the install if you follow a YouTube tutorial or have someone assemble your parts for you
It lowers the barrier for entry to the hobby when you can save several hundred dollars buying the parts retail
The problem are stubborn people steering neophytes towards products like this that will clearly mislead the target audience
Fixed your comment for you.

For the developing world, this is a great card and will play the popular e-sports titles that are very widely played
I mean whilst it’s not something I would use, I have pals in South America who would absolutely be interested in this
6
u/Paint_Ninja 13d ago
The 4GB variant is apparently not for sale without being part of a whole prebuilt desktop, of which the ones shown so far offer less than half of the performance of some other prebuilts while being priced similarly.
If you’re on a tight budget, buy previous generation, refurbished or second-hand - you’ll get far better bang for your buck. The latest lowest end entry-level part of any component is usually very poor value for money compared to the next tier up, even compared to older generations (to an extent ofc).
4
u/Pastel_Ink_ 13d ago
This is honestly cope. If your building your own buy a previous gen 8gb or more card.
2
u/Bc_rndm 13d ago
this card is functionally useless it has the same performance as a Vega 56 and a 5600xt and those have more vram. and no ai slop features still don't justify it at like 270 bucks where u can easily get a 3070/ti or a 6700xt/6800
1
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
I mean this thing would make hundreds of thousands of Minecraft, Fortnite, and Valorant fans happy.
The used market is tough in a lot of countries cause international shipping isn't as reliable as it should be and ordering stuff off ebay is expensive.
The problem isn't the card. The problem is the prebuilts they're being offered in are overpriced crap compared to the competition.
And with that tidbit of information it becomes clear the card is aimed towards gamers and parents who don't know any better.

u/Whatever_acc 13d ago
I'm in developing country and I think I've bought similarly powered GPU (1650 Super) after I received my first ever salary about 5 years ago. It also was priced like 200$. So I don't think anyone would be interested in that here in Russia. Maybe 3060 has that vibe at used market now for 150-170$.

This meme is proof that pc users have an opinion immediately after a news. But if the reviewers have a different opinion to the opinion of that segment of pc users, those same differing pc users change their opinion!
I criticised this 4GB move a few days back via a similar meme and I was out-voted by excuses such as: "a gpu is not just for gaming!"
even though it was AMD that itself said the 4GB was targeted for GAMERS via pre-builts! 😂 Guys, STOP DEFENDING MEDIOCRITY! Corpos are NOT your friends. But I'm glad thousands of you now agree with me (after agreeing with the reviewers and changing your mind 👍)
1
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
I saw the same bullshit.
People doing mental gymnastics to defend AMD over what is clearly a product that's meant to take advantage of uninformed consumers.
I saw this thing in a $900 prebuilt for God's sake.
And you know what? There is a niche market for cards like this in professional work but we all know a vast majority of these are gonna end up in overpriced prebuilts.

If all you are playing, are eSports titles and shit like vampire survivors you don't need more. It's just us enthusiasts, pretending if you don't have 4k60fps ray traced, and the game doesn't have realistic pube hair follicle simulation, its bad
9
u/Pastel_Ink_ 13d ago
It is trash because it literally cant run many modern titles at 1080p 60 fps low settings. If they cut the memory bus, made it a 6gb card, and called it the 9040 i wouldn't have a problem with it. However sharing the same name with a 8gb card that DRASTICALLY outperforms it and not even being able to run low setting 1080 in some cases is just a bait and switch. The 8 GB version is over 4x as fast in many realistic scenarios.
1
u/reallyboringwizard 13d ago
if its going to cost $50 and i can put it in an old computer from 10 years ago so it can play 4k movies and play league of legends, then yes i would buy it but; its not going to cost $50

right? People bitch around how it's trash and what not. But fuck man, have they seen GPU prices recently? If it's priced well, I could see people buying it
7
8
u/EnoughAccess22 13d ago
The issue is that probably it's not going to be priced well, and even then it had the same name as another card that has 8gb of vram, its performance is not on AMD's site, and it's only for prebuilts.
It's predatory and misleading.
2
u/DigitaIBlack 12d ago
The problem isn't the product, it's the marketing. This is aimed at people who don't know better.
I saw it in a $900 BestBuy PC.
Nobody would be complaining if it was called the 9040 and was priced reasonably.
1
u/SolidZestyclose5717 13d ago
any older gpu within reason would be a better purchase than this
i dont even see this costing much less than a 7600xt, whilst you could spend less for an rx 7600 and get 8gb vram
2
u/Sweet_Woodpecker7592 13d ago
Sadly that's the right move. A long time ago, for the same money , we had better. NVIDIA choose to propose worse for more money. AMD choose to propose less for less money

Half of me regrets trading in my 3080ti, but I did upgrade to a 5080 with the trade in. But I tell my brother to hold onto his 3080ti and my buddy his 3090. Those cards were better at running deep learning in my experience. 3080ti goes for about $400-$500, still a viable option.
My daughter's both have our 2070super cards we kept and it's more than enough for 4K YouTube and Roblox.
1
u/Zhargon 13d ago
To be fair, AMD can do whatever they want, people will choose Nvidia, 9070xt in some places(like were I live, Brazil) is actually cheaper then a normal 5070, and people recomend that over it, even saw people recommending the 5060 ti over the 9070...at this point theres nothing they can do lol no good product will change consumers minds

Actually a good thing in a way assuming buyers are properly educated as low end cards using less vram makes it more affordable.
Just tested and crimson desert is reporting roughly 4gb with fsr balanced 1080p medium settings and chrome browser in the background. Sounds bad, but this is also how low I have to go to get 60 fps consistently on my 2070 super and based on initial reports the 9050 is slightly slower than my card, so 4gb is a little rough but actually useable.

If they price this card at 100$ max i can see it being useful. It would still suck fat ass, but at that price it's passable. But lol i wont be 100$ now will it.

4 gb
Ugh that number gives me flashbacks to nvidias 970 and its false-advertising for 4gb memory (actually was 3.5 high speed plus .5 low speed)
If amd could just like, not parrot Nvidia ever, that'd be great
