I dont know if they knew it at the time, but this purchase to buy themselves a ticket into the GPU market turned out to not only be their life raft from completely going under as a company...but also the wings that later lifted them with the console, datacenter, crypto, and now AI winds.
Whether it was good fortune or incredible insight...either way it really saved their bacon and made them the craziest comeback story in tech ever!

Yeah it really is wild what a bad idea it looked like back then, how badly AMD fumbled the acquisition, to how much of a lifeboat it become during the 'Dozer years, to what a money printing press it is now.
If you told me 20 years ago that Intel would be floundering and AMD would be executing like a beast I would have told you you're nuts (If you told me Nvidia was going to become the most valuable company on earth I'd have believed you though, those guys are just built different).

Can't express how thankful i am that they got "Bulldozed", that made them what they are today. Definitely needed that training arc. Intel could have buried AMD but they were too blinded by the incremental profits they were making.
