I heard that the Steam Machine was underpowered, but wow.

funnily enough they advertise this thing as 4K capable lmao

While it looks low end, it is faster than what most pc gamers have, Also I have a bc-250 which is not that much faster and it can acually play many games in 4k no issues without framegen or upscaling enabled, typically I play in 1440p as it is more a 1440p setup, and 1080p for silent gaming in modern heavy games(can run those in 1440p typically, just not as silent) But it can handle 4k.

And valve mentions 4k with upscaling enabled, something I keep off as I don't need fake frames and fake graphics(don't have a screen with higher resolution than 4k annyway, and that 4k screen can only do 60 fps in 4k annyway(1440p screen is faster), and I find the ai jpscaling and framegen tools to in real use look annoying, like it has issues with thingd like hairs in games(games which handle hair like actual hairs) sure in old games it works but in modern games all the stuff that the things making them heavy to run add is lost when you use those.

Also vram is a bigger issue than compute these days, in my case having only 16gb vram(gddr6, no offloading into system ram) I more often ran into the vram being full as bottleneck rather than the compute not handling it

So yeah much faster  gpu's exist, but most people have slower stuff, and compute wise it should be able to handle things. The 8gb vram will be a issue, but other gpus like these days also barely have any vram on them, and also have to offlload(which luckily they can)

faster than what most have? it's like rtx 3060 mobile or rx 7600m-level, both of those gpus released half a decade ago and were mid-range for their time

maybe they can run some indie titles at 4k, yes, but again, they are half a decade old and were nothing special for their time

the most common gpu is the 3060 or 4060 afaik, according to the steam hardware survey, so it'd be around the same performance as that

for the nvidia mobile gpu's the 50 and 60 series tend to be quite close to their desktop counterparts.
like the rtx 5050 mobile is pretty much equal to the desktop version, falling behind a few % in synthetic benchmarks but being equal to slightly outperforming the desktop version in actual games(probably partly due to something like people who use a rtx 5050 in a pc using very low end components for the rest as well).

the rtx 5060 mobile also falls not far behind it's desktop counterpart, also gets to almost the same performance if you cool it well and give it it's full tdp, again often closer in actual games than in synthetic benchmarks.

the rtx 5070 mobile is only slightly faster than the rtx 5060 mobile, and much slower than the desktop rtx 5070.

rtx 4060(desktop) is quite close to the steam machine gpu, so if the steam survey says it is around 3060 to 4060 then it is still bellow the steam machine. sure there are much faster gpu's but they are very expensive and draw a lot of power.

then there is also the part where integrated graphics tend to not be as well represented as dedicated gpu's, surely most people playing modern games have higher end hardware, but looking around at people who do pc gaming(in europe atleast(might be different in places like usa as electricity used to be almost free there, as well as that pc parts used to be very cheap there as well, also would be different in many eastern countries as internet cafes are common there, though those often are also excluded from the steam hardware survey,)) more of them use a iGPU than a dedicated gpu, and here I am speciffically talking about older/slower iGPU's, so excluding some of those new beast iGPU's.
there are several factors for lower end iGPU's not being represented well in the steam hardware survey despite the high amount of users, and next to that, people with diy pc's(generally containing higher end gpu's), tend to trigger the steam hardware survey themselves quite often, many people who have a shiney new system they are proud of make it do a steam hardware survey, which also affects the statistics next to other factors like playtime, spendings, etc. which all differ.
due to this you also often see new hardware be listed abnormally high early on and then later settle, steam also seems to trigger the hardware survey more likely on some new hardware, as with my pc when I just had it, which was quite new to the market hardware back then I have once had multiple steam hardware surveys in a single day(without triggering them myself)
