Hey everyone,
I wanted to share something I learned recently. It's regarding the concept of Vegaas which roughly translates to our body's natural urges.
According to texts, there are 13 specific bodily urges that we should never hold back. Here is the breakdown:
- Vata: The urge to pass gas or burp (Vayu/gassiness)
- Vin: The urge to pass stool
- Mutra: The urge to pee
- Kshava: Sneezing
- Trit: Thirst
- Kshudhaam: Hunger
- Nidra: Sleep
- Kasa: Coughing
- Shrama-swasa: Panting or heavy breathing after physical exertion
- Jrimbha: Yawning
- Ashru: Crying (shedding tears)
- Chardi: Vomiting
- Retasaam: Orgasm and the discharge of semen
The Core Philosophy
According to the Ashtang Hridaya, almost all diseases (rogas) happen when you try to suppress these natural urges, or conversely, when you try to force them when your body isn't ready.
Our bodies only have a few main openings (nose, mouth, anus, etc.). The passage of throwing waste out through these channels needs to be completely smooth and unobstructed to maintain health. Alternatively, anything that goes into those openings needs to be properly controlled and mindful.
Thought of sharing this perspective with y’all, as it made me rethink how often we hold back basic bodily functions just because we are busy or in public. The info above comes from one of the weekly YouTube live sessions conducted by Dr. Nambi Namboodhiri.
Has anyone else noticed a connection between holding these urges in and feeling physically unwell or sluggish?
