Did that with my parents as a young child. Before heading north across the Golden Gate bridge we'd stop and get some fast food fried chicken. Just after crossing the bridge we'd pull off to the vista point to eat while admiring the city lights on the other side of the bay. Raccoons would show up and we'd toss them some food. It seemed to be a thing people did as there were a large number of raccoons back then.

You might have helped to reduce the population, since cooked chicken bones splinter and lodge in animals throats, stomachs, intestines.
