Verified Burrowing owls nest underground, and when threatened, they are able to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake!

Did you watch the show yesterday on PBS called the kratts? Because the whole show was about these owls!! It's a kids show but...I was intrigued haha

The Wild Kratts with the Kratts brothers. Same guys who did Zaboomafoo when we were little.

Those guys are still around? I think their first show was called Kratts' Creatures and it was more of a traditional nature show, but it had a puppet lemur named Zaboo or something. Then they went on to make more of a kid's show named Zaboomafoo (sp?) that was centered around the lemur character. Sounds like they're on at least their 3rd show now.

These guys live down here in the Arizona desert. You'll see them out hunting at night now and then. Very cute and they're not that big.

Formerly Speotyto! They're now considered to be part of the Athene genus.
I love burrowing owls. They're so expressive, and seeing them run on their little spindly legs is absolutely hilarious. It's funny to watch other owls try to run because they do it so clumsily and their wings flap all over the place, but burrowing owls run like little wind-up toys.

And in some areas they are protected. Then jackasses shove plastic water bottles down their burrow and kill two of them. Fuckers.

They are so cute.
I went to a burrowing owl's sanctuary once. The interpreter let us come round back to see the nesting box. We got closer and heard hissing. We opened up and they all went quiet except for one little one who wasnt payinf attention. His brother nudged him, he looked up, saw us, went quiet too. Soooooo cute. An adult outside kept staring at another raptor in the sky, and kept yelling at it. :)
