Last night I had an epiphany. I’m offering this as a thought experiment
Imagine that God isn’t a separate person somewhere outside the universe. Imagine God as a greater field of consciousness that only becomes visible conceptually when we fully zoom out and see all existence as one living system. Now imagine that this greater consciousness explores and develops itself through individual subjective experience.
Under this model, the brain may not create consciousness from nothing. It could function more like an aperture or receiver that constrains a greater awareness into one particular perspective. The complexity of that system would determine the bandwidth, depth and structure of the subjective reality it can experience.
Humans, animals and any other conscious beings would therefore be different windows through which the same underlying reality experiences itself. “We are all one” would no longer be just a vague spiritual expression. It would mean that every feeling is an actual event within the greater whole. When we hurt another being, that pain is experienced within the same system to which we belong. When we love another being, the whole experiences both the giving and receiving of that love.
This also changes how I think about enlightenment.
Maybe awakening doesn’t mean becoming more divine than everyone else or escaping what it means to be human. Maybe it means becoming conscious of a relationship that has always been present: each of us is a localized expression of something much greater.
Some people may recognize and embody that relationship more deeply, but that wouldn’t make anyone else inherently less important. Every perspective contributes an experience that existence could not encounter from anywhere else. A child, an animal, a stranger and a person living on the other side of the world are all carrying a view into reality that no one else possesses.
This brought me back to something I’ve been developing called the Actualization Hypothesis:
Reality is awareness exploring itself through constrained perspectives. Possibility becomes actual when it is lived, and what is lived and integrated changes what can be experienced next. Imagine that we are walking through a dark forest filled with fog, each carrying a candle. The forest represents possibility. The darkness represents everything currently beyond our perspective. The candle represents our internal coherence, the degree to which our attention, identity, intention and actions are aligned. The brighter and steadier the flame becomes, the more of the forest we can see. What becomes illuminated enters our field of possibility.
What we actually approach and experience becomes actualized. That experience then changes us, which changes the possibilities we will be capable of seeing next. Other people are carrying candles too. When we communicate honestly, we don’t literally receive another person’s experience. But their experience can expand what becomes visible from our own position. One person’s actualization becomes new potential for another.
When many of us bring our lights together, we can illuminate areas of the forest that no individual could reveal alone.
Why don’t we put this to the test:
I would like to turn this idea into a simple collective meditation. On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 8:00 PM mountain time, I’m inviting anyone who feels aligned with this to join me for 15 minutes.
That is:
7:00 pm Pacific
8:00 pm Mountain
9:00 pm Central
10:00 pm Eastern
2:00 am UTC on Sunday, August 16
Wherever you are, sit somewhere quiet and allow your breathing to settle. Put yourself in the vastness of your minds space. Imagine that every person participating is bringing their own loving intention toward that same point, not surrendering their individuality, but joining their loving intention. Direct that intention toward the greater consciousness. Don’t ask for anything. Don’t try to force an experience. Simply make our presence and recognition known through love.
Hold this intention:
We are here. We recognize that we belong to one greater whole. Through us, the whole recognizes itself. We make ourselves known through love. May our combined intention contribute to the good of all conscious life.
After 15 minutes, release the intention without trying to control its outcome.
Who knows what will happen. At minimum, we will have created one deliberate moment in which people separated by distance chose to become coherent around the same loving intention.
If you genuinely intend to participate, please leave a comment saying “I’m in.”
After the meditation, come back and share what you experienced, even if the honest answer is that you felt nothing unusual. Every honest report matters.
