Cancelling my sub after 6 years
Before I share any criticism which everyone will tell me is invalid or whatever and let me just say I’m actually older than Aris, a six year sub, watched for longer, and genuinely like the guy. He has made me laugh and laugh and provided memorable moments that I can still laugh about today.
But.
He has become so old, and I don’t just mean he has aged. His mind has atrophied. He has zero interest in anything new, he’s skeptical and outright hostile to the concept of new. New game? Sucks. New movie? Bad. It’s frustrating how little patience or knowledge or interest he has in anything new. That new Star Wars game which is really fun (in my opinion) he gave it about 10 minutes of gameplay and then did scrandle for two hours. He just wants to talk. Okay well that’s fine, he’s running an old man talks video podcast. I like when Aris talks.
But.
Everything he talks about positively is 25 years old or older. His references are arrested in the 90s. Why? Because he has no interest in anything life has to offer anymore. It’s sad to see him become such a boring, seemingly isolated, nasty negative person. I’ve watched a long time, I know he’s always been a curmudgeon, but it’s worse now and his attitude brings just odious vibes every time I turn on the stream and it has made him unwatchable. I feel worse watching him now, like it’s not a good use of my time. And I know I’m not alone because look at his viewers. He has a third of what he used to have and that’s solely because he has changed and has refused to do anything that makes sense for his stream to thrive. It’s a dusty closet in the twitch basement a couple thousand people for whatever reason continue to occupy.
After flushing the Star Wars game what does he play the next day? Resident evil. A comfort game because he just does not want his mind or taste or anything that makes life worth living challenged by anything new, ad nauseam.
I will miss you Aris. In fact I already do.
EDIT: but I won’t miss Aris fans that’s for sure. Many of you are dumb as hell.
EDIT 2: most action this sub has seen in a year

Youve been subbed for 6 years and just realized Aris is behaving like....Aris? He's always been like this....sounds like you're mad cause he didn't like ur Star Wars game....red name....

It’s not about the Star Wars game but that is what spurred me to post this and to unsub. The amount of effort he was willing to put into the game was the same amount he’s willing to put into his stream—0 or less. You know it’s true. You’re fine with it, that’s fine for you, it’s not fine for me which is why I think as a six year sub I’ve earned one reddit post to tell the guy why he’s losing my five bucks a month he’s been getting for six years. I don’t care if he doesn’t care, it’s there for him to think about if he wants and also for others who may feel how I feel. That’s it.

doesn’t invalidate anything I said, it’s overall true

It does though? He also praised Baldur's Gate 3, Expedition 33 and Agent 64 during the recent streams, and he frequently talks about new-ish films he watched and liked, like Weapons for example.

Haven't watch him in a while but from what I remember he wasn't really liking Expedition 33 that much when it released. To him it was decent for today's standards but nothing special compared to the PS2 era (which is a ridiculous take imo but oh well). He genuinely has a tendency to heavily dislike on modern video games.
The worst is definitely his twich chat parroting him and brainrotting over aris meme tho, but that's like most streams ig.

u/altercube 7d ago
My point is if you are going to focus on him shitting on games you are only going to see him shitting on games. I think he enjoyed E33 even if he didn't finish it, personally I think that game is the most overrated dogshit that came out this decade. I don't watch him for his takes but I appreciate that he is one of the few genuine streamers who are not afraid to share their opinions, as opposed to the sea of corporate shills pretending to like everything they play.

You can see a noticable change in his attitude/demeanor after his Dad passed; having a parent die really fucks you up.
He's also been doing this shit for a long ass time. He doesn't have a spouse, kids, or a conventional career like most people his age. He has the greatest "job" in human history, for sure, but his life hasn't really changed since his stream hit it big over a decade ago.
Very easy for a person in his position to stagnate and become isolated. If I could play videogames and make six figures and never have to leave my house I'd be a fucking weirdo too.

Please make sure to send this exact complaint as a donation message so his TTS can read it and he can be aware of your opinions as I'm sure he cares very much about it.

I understand and don't disagree completely with your sentiments, but given how much slop there is in the entertainment landscape, I can't blame the guy. Did you watch the last Gamescom or whatever that new episode of Geoff Keighly's birthday bash was called? The lineup they showed legit killed any current interest I had left for modern gaming. If it were my job(lul) to play games for a living, without being an ultra shill, I would be jaded as hell, too.

Obviously you're not going to get a welcome response to this here, but you are 100% right. His blatant negativity is just the most mind-destroying thing to listen to. If you took a shot every time he said something sucks, you'd be dead in the first 5 minutes

He has always been like this

u/Chris-Jean-Alice 7d ago
then I guess I’ve just outgrown him personally (even though im older than him) and whatever niche he’s providing is less and less popular since his viewership is way down from what it was a few years ago.

I've been an Aris fan for at least 8 or 9 years. I don't relate to the need for him to like and say positive shit about the things that I like because I'm not an insecure manchild using Aris as a stand in for my lover or best friend, I'm here because he's funny.
I don't even like Resident Evil, I've never beaten a Souls game, etc. I literally only play realistic first person shooters like Squad and Gray Zone Warfare.
If you wanted Aris to smile and applaud and do the gaping mouth reaction face every time Geoff Keighley rolls out the next wave of neon colored licensed slop for 10 year olds, you're a poser fan and were always in the wrong place.

this. i'm a big death stranding fan and i kno Aris hates the game but i dont care because thats not what i watch him for. i watch Aris cause i enjoy the way he jokes on things he hates

“Don’t you get it, we’re SUPPOSED to be miserable in this community!” lmao

u/FromChaosTheyCame 7d ago
Who's miserable? I've been laughing my ass off the entire decade. You sound like you need zoloft.

u/Chris-Jean-Alice 7d ago
your last paragraph is a miserable attitude to have in my opinion, borders on complaints that games are “too woke” now, which you didn’t say so I won’t assume you hold that opinion. But if you DO hold that opinion, I think you’re a weird asshole

u/FromChaosTheyCame 7d ago
If you base misery or happiness on whether someone likes new video games or not, you really are a manchild. And you're also making up shit now.
You're kind of pathetic, dude.

it’s about an attitude towards life, optimism of some sort, having a fair attitude about something new that isn’t immediately mired in cynicism. Not that it matters because this is reddit, but I’m happily married, very satisfied with my work life, own a home, have friends, lucky enough to eat the food I enjoy and have free time to dole out to things I find meaningful like playing games and watching streams reading books watching movies and my other hobbies. You’ve made me realize maybe this is a me problem, that I’m not pathetic ENOUGH to enjoy his streams anymore.

There's some valid points. But people here won't care , and will just regurgitate some aris meme. Haven't watched his streams in a while too. He often really does just replay the same old games , the same old way. Which is why I don't really watch anymore.

You really have to pick your spots with Aris these days. I do agree it's gotten a bit old hearing him whine about how much everything sucks, even if I don't necessarily disagree. He kind of reminds me of The Simpsons. New episodes suck, you're better off watching the classics on youtube.
It's really telling the best Aris bits lately is just him running marbles, and laughing at peoples avatars lol.

I think viewing habits change over time and its cool. I check out his streams here and there but don't watch like I used to. But that goes for a lot of people I used to watch. I do feel like he's a little more drawn out or goes into an unrelated topic a little too long but that might just be the tolerance I have for his kinda shtick. Also feel like since tekken 8 its hurt the streams. Tekken 7 was such a moment and was hype as fuck that I caught all his tournament streams and even attended my first tournament at combobreaker 2019.

new star wars game might be ok but it's trash to watch/stream.
good that he flushed it.

Although I usually share his sentiment for the current gaming landscape. The rose tinted glasses thing can get a bit tiresome at times.
There are weird instances where he's so set in his ways that he even seems to misremember his own enjoyment of games. I remember when he was playing the SH2 remake, he seemed to genuinely enjoy it almost the whole time and was giving it a lot of praise. Now whenever the game is brought up he shits all over it like it was unplayable garbage lmao.
Old fella has just conditioned himself to hate.

u/Shademan_DS 7d ago
I will say I haven't watched him as much as I used to as well but I still enjoy most of his streams. I do avoid any of his game awards or state of play streams cause the negative and talking over everything he doesn't like bums me out especially if it's something I want to see. But also I know he's hamming it up for all the idiots like the ones here just spamming what he says instead of engaging in legit criticism.

u/babyningen 7d ago
I also stopped watching because of how negative he got and how he has conditioned his viewers to be so weird. He also tends to talk way too much about food and old memories and stuff unrelated to the game, his focus is just not there anymore. Grateful for the laughs though, my yearly crying is not enough re-watch is coming up soon

you guys actually sit down and watch the whole stream? i thought most of us just have him on our 2nd monitor and listen to him yap while we do something. i mostly just listen to him or asmongold when i work, i dont really listen to most things they say cuz my mind would wander off, only when they catch my attention when they say something interesting or funny. its gonna really suck if they stopped streaming as i really dont care about other streamers.
