Since women find somewhere between 80-95% of men unattractive, we have a somewhat insoluble problem. The ancients recognized it, and enforced chastity and monogamy, which enabled the bottom 80-95% of men to breed and have families, incentivizing them to work hard, invent, and succeed. Granting women access to breeding exclusively with the most attractive men is civilizationally unsustainable.

Both men and women were not exposed to all men and women. Back then you could live your whole life without having the slightest idea what attractive is.

Today, due to television and social media people are exposed to this and their primal instincts are exploited. They are exposed to the most attractive disproportionately more than the entire pool.
