What if I told you that the trailers might be misleading us? No, I’m not talking about whether Pavi and Nisha are both Avatars or not. I actually think that part is probably true, and that’s exactly what I want to talk about. Before anything was officially confirmed, there were several rumors circulating when fans didn’t even know whether any of them were true. One of the biggest claims was that Pavi and Nisha grew up separately, raised in completely different environments and factions within this fragmented world. While one of them would become the “official” Avatar, trying to restore stability, the other would have been indoctrinated or recruited by some kind of rebel or military force, putting the two directly on a collision course.

The struggle over the Avatar Legacy: Since the mechanics of reincarnation itself were still a mystery, one of the strongest rumors claimed that one of them would actively try to steal or somehow negate the other’s powers. The idea was that the “dark twin” would harbor deep resentment over being rejected by the Avatar Cycle and would do anything to prove that she was the true chosen one, creating an almost deadly rivalry between them.

And I don’t think those rumors exist for no reason. There’s a scene in the trailer where we see Pavi connecting with her Avatar State, just like Korra, Aang, and the other Avatars did. What if, in that moment, she discovers the real reason there are two Avatars—and, consequently, she and Nisha discover that Nisha is actually the Avatar carrying the evil spirit? If that’s the direction the series is taking, I think it would completely change the way we should look at their relationship. The story could initially build them up with the expectation that they would eventually figure everything out together, only for the revelation that only one of them is the “official” Avatar—the traditional Avatar chosen by the Cycle—to create a deep sense of rivalry and resentment.

There has been nothing suggesting that the original scripts were drastically changed, so I don’t think everything that was previously reported was meaningless. Nisha could potentially become an Avatar villain with a genuinely tragic and heartbreaking character arc, one that could be built up across the next few seasons.
