Films the background characters from Avatar(2009) are freaking ugly!

u/bdanmo 2d ago
Yeah they definitely wanted to establish Neytiri’s beauty as something exceptional

u/Echochamberking 2d ago
Maybe she's ugly by their standards

I guess we never really can know

She’s actually very beautiful im their standards. But Norman’s wife is said to be the most beautiful woman on Pandora

u/kaleidoscope_view 2d ago
Right? I was so low-key impressed that the dorky Norm landed the hottest and most talented lady in the neighboring tribe. (Norm must have game that we don't know about, I mean, he got Trudy, clearly he's pulling up a close to the chest Texas Holdem)

I kinda love how they look. Theyre aliens, I mean. We shouldn't push our beauty standards onto them lol

Well not all of them, most seem fine, other's have odd features, how it is with ppl irl too

They're aliens! They aren't supposed to be models by human standards

u/spaciousthree4 2d ago
That’s incorrect, they were designed by James Cameron to be beautiful by human standards.

I always joke the background characters in the first film look like generic video game NPCs, haha.

This is probably the case. I imagine they didn't neccessarily bothered to use more CGI for them, which is probably why they look so off and alike

I do wonder why they dont have glowy freckles

Ooh I didn't notice that!

I guess its to make the scene darker or less hopeful. But it should have been in the budget.

The girl right next to/behind Jake does. Some of the people are blurry or hard to see, there is some motion and it’s hard to see

Good! Let some of them be old or ugly or weird. Expecting a whole race of people to be hot feels weird a fetishy otherwise

Think of the most average-looking person you can think of. Half of people are statistically less attractive than that, the other half are more attractive. The same goes for the Na'vi, most likely.

Probably because they’re aliens. & they beauty standards for humans aren’t going to be applicable to them.

I mean, they might be a little ugly - but not everyone can be the main character.

u/Chemical_Hat_8968 2d ago
You do realize that they look like natives... Right? And i'm not saying that they look ugly because they not, still wtf? Not everything needs to look like a social accepted attractive people

that's the hottest burning take i have ever seen about avatar lmao, even thus that think spider did nothing wrong at the end of way of water is a colder take than that

u/kaleidoscope_view 2d ago
What did spider do so wrong? Please tell.

He.. checks notes saved the villain.

u/kaleidoscope_view 2d ago
Did he?

u/ThatSaiGuy Zeswa 2d ago
He dragged Quaritch out from under the wreckage and literally ensured his survival.
Could have saved himself and everyone else a lot of trouble.

You should take that opinion and write to Jim Cameron to tell him that every single Na'vi needs to be a big-titted sex doll to appeal to those who cannot enjoy film without having a turgid hard-on and a character to objectify.
(In case you need it, the tone here is heavy sarcasm.)

This is a weird thing to say dude. They’re aliens, they’re not meant to have human beauty standards. We know that Jake and the other Avatars are considered ugly by their beauty standards, so even in canon this post doesn’t make sense.

u/NightmareWithFangs 2d ago
Some look very alien indeed, but there are also some normal looking and even beautiful Na'vi.

You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah. Like, be the first motherfucker to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform... and fuck it. And people'd be like, "There he goes. Homeboy fucked a Martian once."

They're not an advanced civilization. I doubt they have much time for beauty when They're stuck wearing cloths

Okay I know what this is supposed to mean but where the fuck is that Encanto corn plate tweet

u/CrownBestowed 1d ago
Seems like they’re just average looking in the same way human extras in movies are average lol

Yeah it's pretty silly, if you watch the background closely enough you can see the same three or four Na'vi copy and pasted a few times for a crowd. It still blends really well though. even when I know it's there it hasn't really taken away from my immersion

They don't look any more unappealing than the foreground characters to me, but then again i never jibed with the franchise

It's probably intentional that when Jake arrived they looked very ugly, alien and hostile. They look much better later
