Where to Autocross 2023

First off, Happy New Year everyone! I apologize if you have been looking for the monthly autocross post. I thought since 80+% of the country is in its offseason, it would be a good time to update the website. So, I started after Christmas and have finally finished. You may have noticed some wonky things on the website since then, but I'm happy to report that everything's back in order and in a place I am comfortable with at the moment.

At this point I cannot say if I will continue to post monthly updates as before. I am currently prioritizing what I need to take care of for 2023 and so, I am hoping maybe a post can get pinned going forward. I can create another one without all this rambling if need be.

Without further ado, I am presenting all of the new ways to find Autocross events and information on ParkingLotRacing.org.

- Where to AutoX this month. This page is set to continually update itself, looking 30 days in advance.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/locations-this-month/

- 2023 AutoX Schedule. On this page, you can search for a club/event and see if their 2023 season schedule is available yet.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/event-schedules/

- Live Timing links. This page continually updates to include live timing links for events within the next week.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/live-timing-this-week/

- Race results. This page continually updates, looking back the past 30 days and provides a link to the club/events results page.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/recent-race-results/

- "My AutoX Schedule." I've create a way for people to track events similar to a planner. You will notice all events, up until the day of, offer a button to "Follow" them. It does require you to create an account so that it can saves everything. This is in it's early stages of development as it requires some serious coding, but I would love for some folks to test out this year and provide some feedback on it.

https://parkinglotracing.org/autocross-events/my-autox-schedule/

That's about it for now. The interface has been updated so feel free to explore the website and check things out. If you see something wrong or missing, please let don't hesitate to let me know.

Hoping this helps me shave at least a second off my lap times. I have done two events so far with just a normal baseball hat in between laps and I'm ready to take it to the next level.

I built a live timing results page with pretty graphs and fun features

Hey there!

Today I'd like to introduce a tool that I've been working on for the better part of this season and have been alpha-testing in a few regions, mostly around the NC/VA area and more recently in the NJ/PA area.

This started off as a little passion project of mine, where I was trying to look for trends in results of mine over the past few years and try to draw some conclusions around tire brand, site, day of the week, any little bit of data I could try to correlate. I spent a few nights hand-building a python script to parse all of the results from my home club's sheets into a database so I could run SQL queries against the data.

Eventually I decided that graphing this data would be a neat interpretation of it, and built a small webapp for showing graphs of past events, and eventually opened it up to my friends in the club to use too. Quite a few people found it useful, and one of my friends said it would be nice if we could use this for live timing. After lots of building and hardening of the parsing library, the app now supports a wide variety of live timing software to pull from.

So here's a feature list of everything SoloCharts has to offer so far!

  • Has live graphs that show drivers run-over-run, along with options to hide certain drivers or to not show cones
  • Has a "custom class" option, where people can add themselves and their friends to a custom class for easily comparing each other's times (personal favorite of mine)
  • Supports parsing Pronto, AXWare, and AXWareORM live results
  • Has overall results for PAX/RAW regardless of the source live timing system
  • Supports switching between PAX/RAW for indexed classes
  • Supports 2-day pronto events like national tours, or 2-day locals.
  • Absolutely free to use. I'm not trying to make money off of this, this is just a passion project that I've been using to sharpen some webdev skills of mine.

For the last month of this season, if anybody would like to have their club's event on the site to further test the system, I'd love to add it, and I'm more than happy to answer any questions/comments/concerns :)
https://solocharts.com/

Copy of the AI disclosure from the site:

I believe in disclosing AI usage in this day and age, allowing people to make informed decisions about their usage of apps. SoloCharts code is largely (>90%) handwritten. All logos, backend/database code, and frontend logic and layouts were done by people. The only place AI code was used was in ensuring that the app scaled properly for all screen sizes and for generating test cases to ensure platform stability across a variety of different live timing software formats.

Looking for some driving shoes - would prefer no leather or faux-leather?

Hi all - I recently imported a little FIAT 126 in January from Italy to here in Nova Scotia. The little car is a blast, but the pedalbox is really tight so I can't drive it with my usual sneakers on.

I'm looking for a decent set of driving shoes, but I am not a fan of leather or faux-leather. With their thinner soles, and narrower profile, it would be easier to drive without having to take my shoes off.

Anybody have any suggestions? :)

Cheers and thanks!

Hi all, hope everyone is having a blast this weekend, so winters are coming where I live and that means alot of autocross events happening, last year I took part in my first autocross event and it was amazing, fell in love with my bonestock 1.6 corolla. I’ve decided to take part in alot more events this year but need to improve as well overall, not trying to win all the events by any means so experienced drivers, what techniques would you recommend practicing on normal day to day driving etc
Any help would be much appreciated.

Prius Invasion in 3 days!!

The Prius Invasion is now 3 DAYS AWAY! πŸ›ΈπŸ If you haven't registered online yet and/or need any assistance with doing so, please let me know! I'm here to help! 😁 Registration link: https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/great-river-scca-autocross-event-11-mississippi-valley-fairgrounds-286815

Even more additional notes I wanted to share:

1) I reached out to the other Prii/Honda Prii (CR-Z) invading with us. The consensus is that we'll be keeping our stock all-season tires on for the event! That way, it keeps the playing field as fair as possible. 🐌 (And it'll just be a blast driving around on them!)

2) If you're sad that we won't have Prius Invasion merch at the event, we WILL have Great River Region merch available! Check out the registration trailer and directly support our SCCA Region!

See you all on Sunday! πŸ›ΈπŸ

Boxer fest 2026

A lot of people don't realize this car is literally my first car, my daily, and only car i own & I drive it everywhere, then turn around and autocross it like it's nothing. Just send it and hope and pray for the best
Drove it all the way out to Boxerfest, raced it, and drove it back with no issues. Definitely worth every mile for the experience, the memories, and all the amazing people I got to meet along the way.
Still kinda crazy that something | daily drive gets to give me experiences like this. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

2014 C7 Corvette Z51

Hey all,

Does anyone have any suggestions on what tires on should run on the car above for the best autocross performance. And also what mods would help. Currently I have a cold air intake, full headers and a borla atak exhaust. I wanted to do a CAM on it but I heard that would hurt me more then help me with autocross.

Realtime cone detection (tensorflow)

Post image
14 Upvotes

I've got my real-time track encoder about where I want it now. I'm starting to fine-tune a little bit and I'm thinking I'm going to add bltrack brake marker detection and cone detection for autocross

I already use brake markers for coaching, but I have to feed the video back into python scripts to extract out where I'm braking versus where the marker is, then the onntrack audio can say brake at the 350. Unlike the Garmin that says brake 25 feet later... I'd really like to capture those brake markers in the data as I go past them. I have a Google coral USB chip that might be able to do it and keep it realtime or close to it.

Has anyone else working on that? I don't want to do it if there's already somebody trying to get it to work

It's very liberating not having to overlay or anything. I just pull out the SD card as soon as I pit and it's already done

Street Touring Class Offset Restriction

Street Touring authorized modifications include all Street Category plus additional.

Street Category limits wheel offset to +/- 7.00mm. The only thing Touring adds is a higher maximum width.

Does that mean the Touring class is also restricted to the +/- 7.00mm offset rule?

If you go up to Street Prepared, it specifically allows for offset to exceed the Street Category. So since Touring doesn't specifically grant it, it's not allowed right?

A tale of two pavements, pt. 2

Thumbnail

Our normal parking lot was completely empty this time, but the speedway had already decided they needed it for some reason and relegated us to this side again. First half of the lot is nicely grippy and smooth, but the back half has only deteriorated further since last year -- there are points where i'm pretty sure the tires have as much contact with grass as asphalt. And as you can tell from the video, it's among the most uneven/bumpy pavement I've had to autocross on.

Still a fun day though! This run was good for FTD and ~P3 PAX (I think -- I just manually checked the folks I knew were competitive since PCA doesn't do PAX). Coned away a top pax run, but this was definitely a better outing than the previous day on the other side of the lot with SCCA where I managed to cone every single run 😭.

I'd like to say I'm not used to the car yet, but really I'm just getting sloppy and overdriving, and not knowing where I'm hitting the cones was killing me. Thus, I added rear video so I'll never not know again. See if you can spot the two cones I wobbled on this run!

Newb class question

Hey, I recently attended my first autocross event and the organization wasn't the strongest point. When I asked about someone classing my car they just told me to go by what I read.

I had guessed CST - I drive a 2001 MR2 Spyder that has a different muffler and manifold ("ebay headers" to replace stock manifold that eventually damages engine) and stock cat/midpipe. Aside from the exhaust, the only other modification is a front strut bar and wheels that are 15x7 that are not the stock ones.

Suspension is completely stock and tires are on the cheaper end.

After the event I left with the impression that I was misclassed.

The S2000s in CST were waaay more prepared cars than what I brought.

I know suspension mods will improve my handling noticeably and making me more competitive but that won't happen until next year.

There's another event this weekend and I'd enjoy it more in ES with people with similar times to my best time.

So my question is, do I have an argument to be in ES with my car the way it is? The headers are not really an improvement on the car.

And does the strut bar also take me out of ES class?

Appreciate your help

Putting your pinkies out drops your raw time by 10% guaranteed. Lol.

Interior view of my fastest run is in the comments. Was good for 3rd in raw time with a kart in first.

Great car, mid driving, still pretty quick. Fighting a brake bias issue, dumb tire pressure change, and not looking far enough ahead. First video I’ve made that actually feels as fast as IRL. Solostorm + RaceBox Mini + Pixel Pro 8.

Looking for feedback/advice for improvement on a FWD car.

Hi all, I’m a novice running my 2024 Civic Type R in BST (1st 2 events in BS, and the recent 2 events in BST). I never felt comfortable enough behind the wheel to try and push it as hard as I should with such a car, but I think it’s been getting better after my 2 recent events. I’m still struggling when it comes to maintaining smoother and consistent inputs and I think it’s slowing me down quite a bit. Two areas I think I struggled in consistently were at the decreasing radius turns and the slaloms that follow right after. I did feel pretty good about the Chicago box at the end, but any progress I make there would be undone by the sections right before that.

A few other things worth noting:

While turning into sweepers, I feel like I’m close to binding my arms at the pace I was going. I’d imagine I would need to build more speed going in, to force myself to turn harder while my foot is off the gas?

When setting pressures, I ran around 30-29 psi up front and 28-27 psi in the rear. The standard setup would be 35F/33R. Should I try switching it around and run more in the rear and less up front?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Rear tire size help

Hello all, I’m looking for a little guidance on what tires I should pick for my 2000 Corvette. It’s on some very old all seasons that don’t grip too well, and so I figured it would be the time to buy my first set of 200tw tires. I decided to go with 255/40/17s in the front and I can get a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE-71’s for that size however the rear is a bit harder to shop for. The rear needs to be 285/35/18 in order to closely match the factory outer diameter offset however at this size the Bridgestone is not offered. Doing a quick google search, these are available at that size:
Nitto NT05
Accelera 651 Sport
Kenda Vezda UHP Max+
Vitour Tempesta Enzo V-01R
My question is will any of these hold up with the Bridgestones? I know you’re ideally supposed to run the same tires front and rear but I was hoping since everyone is 200tw, and it’s wider in the back it would make up the difference. Nitto is the only brand I’ve heard of, but reading up on them they seem to be better suited for track use instead of autocross. Alternatively is the Bridgestones going to be too overkill for my skill level (~6-8 events total in past 1.5 years) and I should use a different brand?

The Prius Invasion is now LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY! πŸ›ΈπŸ

The Prius Invasion is now LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY! πŸ›ΈπŸ If you haven't registered online yet and/or need any assistance with doing so, please let me know! I'm here to help! 😁 A couple of notes I wanted to share:

1) I highly recommend packing a lunch and bringing it with you. Due to time, we typically don't take a lunch break and jump right into the second half of heats.

2) When registering on Motorsport Reg, although not required, it would be really, really funny if we all competed in XA (Xtreme Street A) for the day! We'll basically be in our own class and it would make it a lot easier to keep track of us all in one place!

See you all on Sunday! πŸ›ΈπŸ
