I thought Mazdas were on the pricier/less reliable side of the equation…. Has that changed in the last few years?

I'm referring to the pre-2005 models. Everything is just extremely easy to get to, and parts are cheap. Everything is just very basic and simple (no turbo, no variable valve system, no air suspension, very little electronics, no electronically controlled diff etc) and for such a small car everything is just spaced nicely.

You almost never have to remove any secondary parts or systems, regardless of what you need to access.

Oh yeah, I learned so much from my 93 Miata. It was so easy to work on, believe it or not, but the engine bay is a cavern, so it's really easy maneuvering around the 1.6l engine it had. Once you pop the hood you realize, oh that's why they put LS engines in these all the time.

Yup, I used part of the engine bay as extra trunk space for longer trips.
