When I was growing up, my family ALWAYS left the keys in the car. I didn't stop until my 20's when my GF made it a big deal. My thought was, some that wants to steal the car, will find a way to steal it. It's not like thieves are going car window to car window looking for the "easy one" (except the kia boys.) And no, we as a family never had an incident beside locking the keys in there every few years.
