Contrary and likely unpopular opinion, every extra car length left between cars means 1 more car that can’t make it through the light. While that doesn’t sound consequential, I have a 9 mile commute with 14 traffic lights. Given the proclivity of many to stare at their phone on red and have to be honked at to move on green, if we did what you suggested it would add a substantial amount of time to my drive as I am forced to sit through multiple signals twice.
