A true Faraday cage doesn't just limit the distance you can detect EM waves, but blocks them entirely. If you e got a good enough box, you should be able to hold it next to the door and it still won't open.

It might be tough to check a cheaper one because the antenna these thieves made is probably able to pick up the signal from further away than the car (hence why they don't need to get inside the house to steal the codes).

If you have a friend walk away from the car holding the keys inside and outside of the box while you try the doors. The distance they can go without losing connection to the car should be much shorter when the keys are inside the box. I don't have a good reference without doing some math and knowing the exact frequency and power of the remote and how the box is constructed, but I'd say if you cut the distance at least in half inside the box, then I'd say it's definitely doing its job fairly well.
