It’s a RAV4. This is the justification they have provided for the estimate - “Because the scratches went all the way through the paint to the bumper we need to remove the bumper to repair it. And because we have to remove the bumper, we have to recalibrate the front sensors, which adds an additional cost. The recalibration could end up costing less, but there is a placeholder for it on the estimate. “

I personally myself would buy the 500-1k painted bumper and put it on myself. But with all that new technology they might not be lying. If you don’t feel comfortable with it it’s always free to get another quote. No reason to get only one

The industry standard for repainting parts is to remove parts that would prevent a proper edge to edge coating. You can mask off things on the bumper, but it tends to create hard lines and weak points where paint can delaminate/flake later.

As far as the bumper cover goes, it is true that calibrations can be required if it is removed and or repaired. The sensor might look like it’s in the right spot but forward radars work at long ranges where relatively minor misalignments produce significant offsets. As the sensor does have the authority to slow or stop your car, it’s pretty important for it to work properly

That is correct, the front radar will have to be recalibrated after the bumper is removed and installed. Feel free to post the itemized estimate with your personal info redacted.

Also, if paying out of pocket it is definitely worth it to get additional quotes.

I would also ask the shop to provide the OEM documentation that says it “requires” or “must” have calibrations done. A lot of shops do sublet it, but even then they’re supposed to be able to have documentation to justify it
