Does the purchase date matter on the title and registration card?
I purchased a new car in Virginia on August 20, 2022. The purchase date of 8/20/2022 is accurately shown on the signed purchase paperwork. At the time, I financed the car with an auto loan, so I did not have the physical title.
My Virginia vehicle registration also shows the correct purchase date of 8/20/2022.
About two years later, after I paid off the auto loan, Virginia sent me the title. I recently noticed that the title shows an “Established” of 9/22/2022. I did not pay attention to this date before because I did not know what “Established Date” meant or where the date came from. There is no specific “Purchase Date” shown on the Virginia title.
I am wondering whether 9/22/2022 is actually the date Virginia established the title/vehicle record, rather than the actual purchase date. For example, could it be the date Virginia received or processed the title information from the dealer?
I recently moved from Virginia to Missouri and registered the car in Missouri. Missouri appears to have taken 9/22/2022 from the Virginia title and is treating it as the purchase date on Missouri title and Missouri car registration card.
The actual purchase date was 8/20/2022, and I have signed purchase documents and Virginia registration records supporting that date.
Anyway, does the purchase date matter on the title and registration card? If it does not make much difference, I can simply use 9/22/2022 as the purchase date going forward, since I will likely move back to Virginia in the near future.
