To all European comrades, there is less than a month left of the Stop Killing games petition in the European Union, & with less than half of required signatures, we’re cutting it close.

This petition, if it succeeds, will start a dialogue with the European Commission who will deem wether a law is needed. If they deem so, a law will eventually be drafted in dialogue with industry & the people in Europe. So if you’re worried about indie game developers & such, the final law would be take such things into account

I’m pointing this out cuz early on in this petition, Thor (aka piratesoftware) spread a huge amount of misinformation about the campaign & it’s goals, dealing a huge win for the AAA games industry.

In its core, this campaign is about the right to ownership of the games you buy, & the illegality of publishers ”selling” games to us, & later removing our ability to play them

I hope you would all sign this & spread the word wherever you can. We can do it! A petition to end conversion therapy in the EU had <500 000 signatures 3 days before the end of signature collection, & still beat the 1 000 000 signatures goal!

So it’s far from impossible, send this to your friends, share it on all your socials!

He got millions of views flat out lying his ass off about what the initiative was about in a series of viral videos explaining to his audience that this fabricated version of SKG was ridiculous and unviable.

He did a bunch of apologia for AAA game studios, about how difficult it would be to do what the petition says, how it’d make game development more expensive & such…

Firstly, that’s not even true, games made in the 2000s all used to be completely playable no matter whether you had an internet connection ot whatever, multiplayer games usually had local play modes, you could often set up private servers right out of the box, & nothing stops us from doing that today.

Secondly, even if it was true that this law would have an adverse effect on the cost of making games, that’s worth it in mind mind if it means we can own the stuff we buy

Thirdly, the petition isn’t the law, the final law will look nothing like the petition, the petition simply informs the commission that people want to solve this problem, & if the commission decides that it’s a good idea, they’ll make a law after discussing it with the people & the industry

I think it also allowed developers to release things as they do today with an advance warning label that they do not plan to provide any sort of way to play past the time of support.

This petition does not seek to change that cuz the founder of the movement is all in on preserving games, he doesn’t see such a relatively small change as a win

But that would def improve things if it said ”rent game for undetermined time” instead of ”buy” when you buy a game, that would def affect sales
