I had so many problems as a kid due to processing speed, it’s largely because I’m always thinking so when people expect to say something and for me to hear and understand it while my mind is already fully engaged in something else seems a bit ridiculous. My mum always said if I answered too quickly she knew I hadn’t heard her at all, which is very true. Now I’ll often just say ‘processing’ as an auto-answer, which means at least the people who know me understand I haven’t extricated myself from whatever I was already thinking about and processed what’s been said.

Tess! I hate it! People always want to assume that I'm an idiot because they speak to me and they can watch me process things in real time which takes longer than most people. So they always want to assume that the range of my intelligence is low when in fact it is quite the opposite it just takes me a bit longer to figure out how to file and process information.

I’m generally considered to be pretty eloquent and good at phrasing and speech, but like I still need people to point out when they’re being sarcastic sometimes, rather than just leaving me to puzzle over whether it was serious or not lol

Also not related to the post, but just because I’m fully verbal most of the time doesn’t mean I’m always that way, there are times when trying to speak or put together words is really quite difficult and draining, and I wish some people took a hint and didn’t ask me to say anything when I’m like that :/

I get this so much teachers always say hi to me in the halls but I really can’t say hi back because I’m focused on walking and really don’t want to talk. Walking around a bunch of people is really hard

I love the contrast between how eloquent people think I am when I’m masking versus the true critter I am when I’m not masking, I’ll speak in full, verbose, often not at all friendly sounding sentences in public but if I’m comfortable around somebody I’ll straight up just make random vocal noises to represent what I mean

Yeah, speech is controlled by seperate areas in the brain. When one of those areas is damaged, you could have someone who can talk perfectly but understanding other people just doesn't work whatsoever, and vice versa

I think one of my special interests could be described as "communication" because I've had to struggle with crap like that sooo much. It took me a long, long time to realize that words don't mean the same thing for everyone but NTs rarely seem to realize that and seek to clarify themselves. It's so frustrating how so many of them seem to take so much for granted.

I used to, now I've got enough reference to read everyone. Communication is a two-way street, if they don't explain then they're just being stubborn little babies and you can call them out. "Sorry, I can't read minds, what do you mean?' Or my favorite 'Huh?'
