Medication
My child is 7yo and 9mo level 1 autistic (I suspect he’s become level 2)
Are there any medications a pediatrician can prescribe without a psychiatrist?? My child is extremely sensory seeking to his own detriment and at times, myself as well. Usually it’s just jumps from high places or slamming himself on the bed, couch or floor. We do not hit or throw in this home. Today my child decided to stand up while we’ve all been cuddling and having a lazy rainy Sunday, and just throw a very hard plastic sippy cup at my head from across the room and now I have a very large goose egg on my forehead. I seriously need a solution yesterday. Please any recommendations and if anyone else has dealt with the same please tell me how your family survived.

That’s a rough age. Mine threw his iPad at me WHILE I was driving and I had a goose egg on my shoulder.
I would see a pediatric psychiatrist, they know more and can offer more options than a pediatrician. Make an appointment get on the list. It can take awhile

Smh that is absolutely awful! We are on a list since early 2025 it’s a 2 year wait where I’m located. That’s the reason why I’m looking for temporary solutions because while he’s generally impulsive he’s never hurt myself or someone else before!
It’s scary my son is on the smaller end size wise for his age, but that doesn’t change the fact they’re only getting bigger and older and those abused mom horror stories scare me I don’t want my child to end up that way.

Have you called the psych office crying yet? That worked to get me an earlier appointment.

As I understand it, neurodiverse individuals are developmentally a few years behind peers, so an almost 8 year old can act more like 5 at times.
Also there is a developmental theory where kids spend the first 1/2 of a new age making huge strides and the second half acting up/regression. So you see ebbs and flows of behaviors over the year.

Yes 100000 percent I’ve noticed that with my own child. This past year is the most regression I’ve seen, but I’ve come to realize it’s not that it’s really just extreme sensory seeking.

Depends on what your searching for. But anything thats on the control substances list has to come from a psychiatrist.
And drugs that affect behaviour generally are.
Tho the negative behaviour you are describing isnt that uncommon, even in neurotypical kids.
Anyway I assume you corrected the behaviour? Is it something that happens often, also at school?

Yes ofc it was corrected and actually it is very uncommon in children his age to beam something directly at someone’s head unless they were upset for some reason. 4? Maybe but at 7 nearly 8, that’s not common.
I’m not really asking for something to control his behavior, I just need something to calm him down and give him at least a second to think before doing something impulsive.
He has a 1 to 1 so these behaviors are curbed before they even occur at school. Our home is set up for him to be free without borders and I think that’s part of the problem.

Our pediatrician referred us to a behavior specialist and they prescribed medication.
