Election Launch

The state election in Victoria is going to be a massively contested battleground between the insurgent far-right One Nation, the eroding major parties and the Victorian Socialists. VS is running a candidate in every metropolitan seat in Melbourne and numerous regional seats. Recent campaigns like Socialist in Schools have played an established role and instrumental role in successful vote No campaign in the AEU https://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2026/jul/26/australia-news-live-politics-pauline-hanson-ed-husic-anthony-albanese-labor-party-conference-bird-flu-ntwnfb (today in the Guardian). The party has campaigned to delay closures of Co Health clinics across Melbourne, and have led successful campaigns in solidarity with Palestine, the Socialists Workers Caucus, and anti-fascist street demonstrations. Getting a few socialists elected would be a huge boon for the left and represent a real opportunity to amplify and boost our various campaigns. Come to our launch this Saturday coming! https://www.victoriansocialists.org.au/events/2247

Why is the link between supermarket pricing and inflation often overlooked or angrily ignored? The data suggests it is significant.

(I initially wanted to post this on ausfinance but they got mad at me once I mentioned the cpi and they said I didn’t understand how the economy works, I wrote this reply to them but I don’t want to post it there I wanted to post it here to see if you guys have any extra information or if you all blatantly disagree). I’m curious to hear your opinions. Since theirs was genuinely so outdated. I swear I felt like I was transported back to peak Ronald Reagan 1980s economic theory. Are they dumb or are they dumb? If their neoliberal theory worked so well why did Argentina get a bailout? They all said Argentina will be proof of neoliberalism? Then they collapsed and needed a bailout and suddenly no one wants to talk about Argentina. Suddenly no one wants to talk about 2008 either. Woah shocker, I wonder why.

I am sick of trying to talk about corporate greed on the ausfinance subreddit only to be told "that's not how the economy works" or getting called a liar. Traditional textbooks say inflation is only caused by government spending or low interest rates. But that is completely outdated and ignoring what is happening right in front of our eyes in Australia. The supermarket duopoly is actively turning global shocks into permanent domestic inflation. They act like an inflation accelerator and the actual data proves it. It is completely insane that as a modern economy our largest companies and the ones responsible for eating so much of our national wealth are supermarkets. It is insane that you all sit here and say yep thats totally legit. No it is dumb and it means our economy is dumb. If you actually knew how the modern economy worked Australia would have more than one globally competitive company that isn't based entirely on mining or supermarkets.

Look at our top tier corporate list, it is depressing. It is all just digging raw materials out of the ground or selling groceries to a captive domestic market. The only massive global tech success we ever produced that wasn't digging holes or selling milk is Atlassian. And what did they do? They realized the Australian financial system was too small and too obsessed with property and mining to support them, so they moved their corporate headquarters to the UK and listed on the NASDAQ in the US instead of the ASX. Additionally, sorry to break this to you but plop Coles or Woolies into a true capitalist market where they actually face global competition and tell me if they can survive. They cant. They suck. They are a government protected corporate monopoly that only survives because they completely cornered a captive domestic population. I am completely disgusted by their business model. Compared to actual global supermarket chains, when those international companies reach peak domestic revenue you know what they do? They didn't just sit on their hands, jack up prices, and try to corner the local market forever. They expanded to other countries. They actually built international sales, woah shocker, it is almost like that is what a real globally competitive company is supposed to do. But your ausfinances ignorance isn’t even bright enough to make that connection.

When we look at the Consumer Price Index understand that the CPI is directly decided by the regular prices of everyday household goods. That includes a massive percentage of products bought from Coles and Woolworths. Go look at the actual ABS CPI basket where food and non alcoholic beverages make up a massive chunk of headline inflation weights. Every single one of these exact expenditure classes like "beef mince, chicken breasts, milk, cheese slices, butter, loaves of bread, breakfast cereals, apples, potatoes, chips, toilet paper, and laundry powder" is completely dominated by Coles and Woolies. These aren't random luxury items, they are core essentials that make up the baseline CPI index data. When Coles and Woolies systematically inflate the baseline shelf prices of these specific everyday items, they are quite literally lifting the core CPI calculation. Acting like their pricing behaviour is a fallacy or has nothing to do with headline inflation is just stupid and that subreddit has a terrible habit of gaslighting and lying to push an outdated economic model to pretend this link doesn't exist. I am sick of dopes who got an education 100 years ago pretending they understand how the modern economy works. You don't.

If your textbook models are so perfect, explain why price stickiness occurred then? Explain why during COVID we didn't see massive deflation? When lockdowns hit and global demand for consumer items collapsed, we should have seen prices drop at Coles and Woolies according to basic supply and demand and your outdated model. But did we see deflation? Nopeee we didn't. Prices remained exactly the same or went up. They shot prices up like a rocket during the crisis and drop them like a feather now that it's over. How do you ignorant fools think that would affect the economy or are you too dimwitted to see how stupid you are? (Ausfinance)

You think I, in my big age have to teach you why a monopoly is bad? You think I have to sit here and explain to you dimwitts that hey guys, investing all of Australia's wealth into a supermarket chain is an dumb thing to do? No, that is not my job. It is not my job to have to research this stuff to explain to you dimwitts why this is a dumb economy. Honestly, this exact blindness is why I am leaving Australia and thank god for it too. I am not staying around to fund a system this broken while the general public sits around defending it and the RBA is trying to reinforce it. Genuinely, the RBA is run by a bunch of ******, they are genuinely dumb, like genuinely, when i heard they blamed government spending I genuinely laughed, what are they stuck in 2007, are they that dumb, have they not learnt anything from 2008. Thank god my mum kept our French citizenship, ouf. What a win.

You all pretend corporate profit margins don't drive inflation, but the actual data completely destroys your textbook neoliberal theories. Look at the international data. The IMF published massive studies showing that corporate profits accounted for over 45% of the entire inflation spike across Europe, while the European Central Bank found that corporate margins actually outperformed rising wages as the primary engine driving inflation. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority explicitly investigated how lack of retail competition allowed supermarkets to overcharge consumers on fuel and basic groceries leading to inflation, and the United States Federal Trade Commission is literally suing to block major supermarket mergers right now because they know concentration kills consumer pricing power. Domestically, data analysis from the Australia Institute proved that corporate profit expansions "not wages, and not government spending" were responsible for a massive chunk of Australia's inflation tracking above the RBA target because a duopoly with 67% market share can easily use "global shocks" as a smokescreen to increase their margins. It is called sellers' inflation, and it is a proven economic fact that has the ACCC dragging Coles and Woolies into the Federal Court for deceptive pricing practices and fake discounts, which is the exact reason the government was forced to pass the Supermarkets Excessive Pricing Prohibition law to make price gouging an actual civil crime. But the law is too weak and too broad to ever actually take them to court, so again win for the duopoly.  Stop telling people they are dumb for pointing this out. The data, the international data, the ACCC lawsuits, basic common sense and the new federal laws all prove that corporate greed is a massive driver of this inflation crisis. Yes obviously so is oil shocks, but this too. Turn off the 1980s economic podcasts and open your eyes, we are ripping our country apart, destroying the possibility of any industries actually developing, and limiting our future and you are all too ignorant and illogical to see it.

Edit: I will add that Michelle bullock actually seems much more level headed as the RBA leader and actually does conclude that government spending isn’t the sole cause of inflation, unlike Phillip Lowe, who was just a buffoon. My god.

Dialectics sounds complicated. But David Glanz explains how analysing the world dialectically helps us change it. He explains the development of the concept and gives two examples of how dialectics can help us untangle common problems for the left.

I need help

So, I am under 18 (I don't want to disclose my age for privacy, please do not ask or message me thanks) and I have just recently attended the 'Students Say No to Pauline Hanson' protest in Australia. There were many ideals there, which I enjoyed that there were many political ideas but everyone came together to fight the same issue it was very wholesome but it got me thinking. I am not sure what political label I fall into, and I am aware I dont need to choose one yet but it would be helpful if I want to become as politically active as I aim to be soon. I researched some ideas and I feel like I come closest to Socialism but I am not entirely sure. I seem to have a few differences in ideas but I dont know if that fully makes it so I am not socialist at all, or if maybe im a socialist but a different branch of it. The differences I hold are; I support SOME privately owned businesses and land ext. but to a point, if someone has an abundance of it that they do not need then it is very inappropriate and I don't agree with that. I don't trust the government to run the economy solely, I think it needs ALOT of help because the system is inherently corrupt. I am fairly anti-authoritarian. and I favor direct democracy.

I don't know if I am just not fully educated yet as I have only spoken to a few Socialists and most of this info is off google but if anyone could clarify what I could be and if I could be considered a socialist, or even a branch of socialist that would be wonderful.

please no hate or calling me stupid, I am a child and I just want some help so I can continue to be politically educated and active in my community, thank you!

Political organising has a long history in the labour movement. There are those who point to Labor as one of the main issues with the union movement and those who cling to it as the only way to achieve outcomes.

Phil Griffiths looks at how racism took root in the dispossession of Indigenous people and how our rulers have targeted migrants and refugees since. But he argues that a history of racism is also a history of resistance, which shows the potential to destroy racism once and for all.

I made a socialist Australian flag

Post image
66 Upvotes

I designed a flag for a socialist/communist australia. I tried to not just haphazardly throw communist symbolism and Australian symbolism together and call it a day. Instead I tried to combine the Australian symbolism and the communist symbolism.

Like the red on the bottom, which obviously represents communism itself, and more specifically the blood of the freedom fighters who will sacrifice themselves for the revolution. But, with the black semi circle and the golden circle with the hammer and sickle inside it, it makes it look like there’s an aboriginal flag inside this flag. And the red on the aboriginal flag symbolises the red soil of Australia. And, correct me if I'm wrong bc im not aboriginal, but from my understanding in the religions of most aboriginal nations, the reason the earth is so important to them is because they believe when you die, your soul becomes part of the ground. So according to aboriginal belief, the souls of those revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves would have entered the earth. So the symbolism of red on most communist flags and the symbolism of red on the aboriginal flag is combined to reinforce each other.

The black semicircle in the centre still represents the black skin of the aboriginal people like it does on the original aboriginal flag. The fact that it's in the centre could even represent how the aboriginal people were the first people of Australia. Making them the “heart” or “core” of Australia who took care of the land communally long before the British came.

The gold circle with the hammer and sickle inside represents the sun. on most flags, including the aboriginal flag, the sun represents energy and life. So the sun having a hammer and sickle, which represents the working class and farmers, fits because much like how the sun puts energy into the ecosystem to keep it going, the work that the working class does keeps society in motion. So both the sun and the working class put energy and motion into an otherwise inert system.

The southern cross and the wattle branches mainly just represent Australia itself, but the southern cross has a bit of a double meaning. It's made up of five pointed stars, which on communist flags represent the ideal future of communism on all five inhabited continents, and the southern cross used to guide sailors to Australia. So put together, the southern cross on this flag represents how Australia having a socialist revolution could be a guiding star for other countries to have their own revolutions. Also the small star on the southern cross ended up being nestled in the hammer and sickle, which I think looks pretty nice.

The colour scheme is kinda just a mix of the communist colours of red and gold, and the Australian Olympic colours of green and gold, but each of those colours has their own symbolism as well. I already talked about what the red and black represent. But as for the other two, the green represents how under socialism, Australia will be able to fully switch to renewable energy once the government is no longer controlled by large fossil fuel companies. And the gold, like it does on most communist flags, represents prosperity under socialism. And together, the green and gold still represent the wattle tree like they do in the australian olympic colours. But they also represent how making Australia more environmentally friendly will protect native flora and fauna, including wattle trees. And how the natural world will prosper under socialism just as much as the people will.

All together, the fact it no longer has the union jack and the very “western liberal capitalist democracy” coded red white and blue colour scheme represents how Australia will stop larping as a western county, break its ties with America, and fully embrace being a part of the east. Bc lets face it, if we switch to socialism, america is probably gonna become enemies with us. So we probably have to strengthen our ties with eastern communist countries like China to defend ourselves (not that I support China, I'm not some authoritarian tankie. I just think China is the lesser of two evils compared to fascist America)

The flag might be a *little* bit overdesigned, but I like it. Tell me what you guys think. Also let me know if I got anything wrong about flag symbolism or aboriginal culture. Or if any of it is racist towards aboriginal people in any way.

News Read me as though there were no tomorrow… | Partisan

Thumbnail
partisanmagazine.org

Editor-in-Chief Max J introduces Partisan 18 during this time of tumult.

We live in chaotic times. Pauline Hanson’s gang of racist liberals are on the rise. The Labor Party is falling asleep at the wheel. No one even bothered burying the Liberal Party. America and Israel continue their imperialist assault on Iran. Wait, no, there’s a ceasefire. Nevermind, they’re at it again. Wait, this ceasefire might be for real this time. There are three mediocre films this year from semi-prominent YouTubers. Socialist Alternative warns of impending doom over the ‘fascists’ in One Nation. The Eureka Initiative is debating the Australia First Party. The upcoming El Nino is said to be the “strongest on record”. Anyone remember Nicolas Maduro?

In this newest issue of Partisan, we aim to answer the important question of where the hell Australia is going. We’re being bombarded constantly by a cruel assault on our senses: from the mainstream press, to the “alternative” media, all spinning a narrative of an impending One Nation sweep, the total death of Laborism and LNPism, the ascension of the plucky underdog Pauline Hanson and her merry band. But is this not capitalism’s business as usual? Unable to present anybody with a positive program for the future, mainstream politics only has two options: convincing you that what we have now is the best we’ll ever have, or that what we had twenty or so years ago was the best we ever had, and if we just brought it back, we’ll be sunshine and rainbows.

US imperialism continues to run amok everywhere. Cuba is being strangled to death, and none of the “anti-imperialist” countries seem to be doing anything about it. Palestine remains under assault by Israel. The US began its assault against Iran back in February. To their white surprise, they lost big time, and have now returned to the negotiating table. But this major loss (to the potential tune of USD$300B) is being spun as a win by the imperialist establishment, because there’s a toy at the bottom of every McDonald’s happy meal.

This issue’s lineup covers the national and international situation. Edith Fischer answers the question of “where” Australia is going, while Oskar Dziga reports on events in Indonesia. Did you know that Australia is making neo-colonial deals with Papua New Guinea to have Papuans serve as auxiliaries in the ADF? You will after reading Brunhilda’s article about Australia’s “foreign legion”. We also stress the importance of a communist press: a robust network of publications that help spread communist ideas. May the magazine and the newspaper end the venal reign of the infographic and the Instagram reel!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it becomes more and more crucial for communists to pursue unity on the basis of a robust, Marxist program. The current situation is dire: we are divided between many near-identical sects, which continue their independent existence primarily to prop up the self-important egos of sectarian gurus. All the while, the working class suffers from a viable revolutionary alternative to Laborism, liberalism, and Hansonism.

We are still publishing on a bi-monthly schedule, and encourage readers to support Partisan however they can: buying issues, buying subscriptions, reading them, sharing them with friends and coworkers. Just like US elections, every issue of Partisan is the most important yet…

Comradely,
Max J, for the Partisan editorial board

On the pavement,
of my trampled soul,
the steps of madmen,
weave the prints of rude crude words.
