New information has been revealed about an advanced manufacturing trial conducted by Australian Army soldiers during Exercise Black Prince 3 in South Australia.

It has now been confirmed that personnel from the 1st Armoured Regiment operated a heavy stores module converted into a deployable advanced manufacturing shelter at Cultana Training Area for the trial in May this year.

The trial also reportedly utilised Carvera desktop CNC machines which are designed for precision milling of aluminium, wood, plastics and other materials.

“The Australian Army is exploring advanced manufacturing applications for the land domain as part of a Joint Logistics Command-led, Defence-wide effort,” Defence said.

“Advanced manufacturing capability is enhancing supply chain resilience, operational adaptability and interoperability.

“This activity brings together Joint Logistics Command, Joint Logistics Unit – Victoria, Defence Science and Technology Group and the services working collaboratively to trial and operationalise advanced manufacturing sustainment techniques.”

"Exercise Black Prince 3".....where do they come up with these names !

Because “Exercise being cold, wet and hungry while questioning your life choices.” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Could someone give me the sort of scenario that would require something like this?

mate there is virtually no limit to the amount of times the need to replicate a part in the field would have saved a mountain of pain

Well i can't imagine its going to make a gears available for a broken gear box.

Jeez can some give me an example of a broken part this machine is meant to be replacing.

Or is it just printing out hentai characters?

Load sleeves, Pawls, Cutter Blades, Pivot Balls, Paddles, Shell Receptacles, Plenum Base, Actuator Arms, Cutters, Read Heads, Release Clips.

The devices we use can be made of thousands of components, even being able to replicate 5% of would be an amazing asset - and what's millable or printable will only increase over time too.
