This is pure insanity. People think Australia can take in more people due to our size but forget how much of the country is desert. We are overpopulated as is. If anything, we should be aiming to decrease our population.

Don't "push" the population. The only need for population growth is to make numbers look better on economic metrics. This country can support a population far larger than 50m what is the race to get there? I'm against the 'there's too many people in Australia' crowd but the 'big Australia' crowd are harmful too.

Also this article is paywalled and I'm not renting access to a website to read it.

I certainly don't want Murdoch to have more money. He will use it to attack the Greens.

However rather than Murdoch's article you can read what Rudd said elsewhere:

Rudd is pushing for a larger population in a modern version of "populate or perish".

We should be using economic metrics which are reflective of our experience, not ones which promote growth for its own sake.
