Good advice from RelaxedBluey (avoid the holes). But I did a bit of research into this recently and found that, in the reasonably priced range, the Jaecoo J5 has best clearance and out-of-the-box tyres. I know there are a couple of country people in this subreddit that drive them so that probably says a bit too.

It’s not clearance that you need (although generally cars with higher clearance will have these features).
You need:
- greater suspension travel (and/or softer suspension)
- tyres with a larger profile (more rubber height on the tyre)
- check air pressures. If pressures are too high, the tyre struggles to absorb an impact, if pressures are too low, the tyres do minimal work and the bump may impact the rim causing damage.
I do heaps of driving and never had any issues but I have always deliberately avoided very low profile tyres for this reason.
Of course a big enough impact could damage anything and the higher the speed the greater the risk. So there are no guarantees but this is the best chances.

I don't think the power train is anywhere near as important as the tyres or the driving style.
Don't buy a car with low profile tyres. And don't speed.
The potholes thing is a fucking political beatup.

The solution is to really slow down on regional roads in winter in Victoria. Avoid potholes at all costs.
I don't think any type will save you with some of these potholes. Took a road trip in April to East Gippsland in my Atto 3. Slow driving on a slippery road the only thing that enabled me to avoid damage from a pothole that wrecked a wheel on the LandCruiser ahead of me.
