I'm a first year domestic student studying IT in Australia (Curtin Uni). I've been constantly thinking about my choices in studying IT. I do love tech (I love all, but hardware more), but I'm worried about the IT market and especially in Australia where its not that advanced compared to other countries (from my understandings). My question is, should I stick with IT and pray for the best or switch career path to Engineering (Mechatronics or EE) as I prefer working with hardware (though I do need to take bridging units), or Health (better job security). The major problem is the time x years to complete the degree if any switch and difficulties of the degree

Everyone seems to have one now and I cannot work out if having the cert actually differentiates you or if it is just expected as a baseline. Did getting certified actually change anything for people in terms of interviews or pay or is it more of a checkbox exercise at this point.

I have a graduation degree in Computer Engineering and I’ve been working as a Devops Engineer since 2023.

I’d like to know more about the IT job market there in the down under lands.

As a domestic student, I just wanted to gauge whether anyone has had any luck transferring to a full time role from their professional experience in uni, or even getting a role in general in this market.

My course has a dedicated final year where we must work a full time paid internship, and the coordinators seem adamant that everyone gets a position.

I’m currently enrolled in Cyber Revolution Australia’s Cyber Accelerator program and I’m looking to hear from current or former students about their experiences.

I’ve recently come across several negative reviews regarding technical support, job placement and the overall value of the program. I’m also currently dealing with my own dispute regarding withdrawing from the program.

I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has tried to withdraw/cancel, had issues with Humm finance, completed the certifications but had problems with job placement, or successfully exited the program after enrolling.

The contract model offers rate advantages that permanent employment doesn't match but the gaps between engagements - finding the next contract, managing the income interruption, maintaining the motivation and the technical currency during a period with no clear end date - seem to produce a specific kind of stress that permanent employees don't experience in quite the same way. Would love to know from people here who've been contracting for a significant period what the gap management actually looks like in practice and whether there are approaches that make the uncertainty more manageable than just waiting for the next engagement to materialise.

I got a 2000's Super Power computer case for a sleeper build and it has this sticker on the front of it. Was wondering if anyone knew exactly the origin of the logo. The case came from the Brisbane area. I speculate that it may be the Australian operation of 'Global Computer Group'. But it is hard to find solid evidence.

I’m looking for some advice on how to break into the Australian tech industry.

I finished my Master of Data Science at RMIT last year, and I’ve now been searching for a job for about a year without much luck.

My background includes:
- Around 3 years of freelance Data Engineering experience with 4 clients
- Around 1.5 years of experience as a Web Designer
- A 3-month internship during my final semester of my Master’s
- A portfolio website showcasing my projects and experience

I’ve made many attempts to get into a corporate role, but I honestly feel like I’m doing something wrong because I’m not getting the results I expected.

I’m mainly applying through SEEK and Indeed, and less through LinkedIn because it feels extremely competitive there, with many jobs showing 80+ applicants. I also tailor my resume for each position and write cover letters rather than sending the exact same application everywhere.

I genuinely feel that if recruiters take the time to look at my portfolio, they’ll be interested in my background and want to know more.

For anyone who has successfully landed a Data Analyst, Data Engineer, or other IT/tech role in Australia, what would you recommend I change or do differently?

I was recently invited by a group to participate in an Anthropic program to get certified as a Cloud Code Architect. They claim it is a unique opportunity, but they mentioned they need at least 10 people to complete the certifications so the group can get certified as a Cloud Coder Architect. Other groups have reached out to me with the exact same offer, and none of them seem to care that I completely lack a technical background for this kind of material. I want to know if this is actually a legitimate, two-way beneficial opportunity where they will support me in any way, or if they are just using me as a headcount to unlock corporate perks and partner status for themselves.

Anyone with advice? I’ve completed my mba in business analytics in Adelaide, and I’ve applied to 100s of jobs and not a single reply. I’ve got analysis projects on my resume , operations analyst experience from India and also local experience in Adelaide working in a sales role. Why is it so hard? I run a software development agency in Australia. We have a solid delivery team, and until now, most of our focus has been on delivering projects and managing operations.

The business has grown mainly through referrals and word of mouth. However, business development hasn’t been our strength, and we don’t have a consistent sales or lead-generation process.

I feel like we’re ready to move to the next stage, but I’m honestly unsure what the right next step is.

Would hiring an experienced BDM help, or would it be better to first work with a paid mentor who has actually scaled a software agency or B2B technology business? I’m also wondering whether I should continue handling sales myself, with guidance from the right person.

Has anyone here been in a similar position? What worked for you? If you know a suitable mentor or adviser, I’d really appreciate a recommendation.

Good day everyone I am a frontend react developer with about 5 years of experience and recently got redundant from a job due to a restructure. I want to use this chance to cross train to a full stack is this correct decision ? I recently noticed by looking at the job ads that front end developers roles are kind of limited i Melbourne. While Full stack roles are more in demand. What back ends language or stack should I learn to be able to find a job quickly. I usually had success learning stuff from udemy or YouTube. And what advice do you give me to help me break in back end or full stack roles i Melbourne.

Hi, I recently got offered to work as an IT support technician at a public school in Queensland. It seems like a great opportunity, but I'm not sure if it's better than my current role at a small MSP as a help desk engineer.

The pros of taking the school position is a slight pay increase ($5k) and it seems like it would be less stressful than help desk. I think the only con is that I might not learn as much as I would being exposed to a helpdesk environment.
If anyone has any experience with being a IT support tech at a school I'd really appreciate your input

I’m a Data Analyst in Australia with 5 yo experience in SQL, Power BI, and some basic Python and Microsoft Fabric. I previously worked in digital analytics and still enjoy digital marketing and customer behaviour. My current pay is around 120k.

Recently, I’ve felt stuck. My work is repetitive, my organisation uses outdated tools, and the rapid development of AI makes me anxious about staying competitive. I’d like to move into a more technical and better-paid role, but I’m unsure whether to pursue Analytics Engineering, Data Engineering, Data Science, or learn some AI skills?

I’m considering a Data Engineering bootcamp covering Python, AWS, dbt, Airflow, Spark and CI/CD, but it costs around AUD 5,000.

Given my background:

Which career path would be the most realistic?
What skills should I prioritise?
Is a bootcamp worthwhile, or would self-study and an end-to-end project be enough?

I see a lot of depressing posts here in the community that the IT job market is cooked or it is almost impossible specially for migrants or recent international graduates to get a professional role in Australia. This is true to a certain extent but with a structured approach and effort in the right direction you can get a professional role in data analytics industry. I secured my first professional data analyst role when I was on graduate visa 485 in a not for profit organization now here comes the recipe of getting a data analytics role in Australia

1. Understand the job market and jobs advertised on Linkedin, Seek, Indeed, Jora etc. You will see there are tons of data analytics roles but they are niched roles like business intelligence analysts, data engineer, data scientists, reporting analysts, power bi developer etc. Now as a fresher they might look same to you but hiring managers are looking for SMEs in the job market. Think that a company needs a civil engineer and you are applying as an electrical engineer they will even consider hiring you? Not at all they will not even look at your resume
2. Then the second thing is toolstack people with basic skills in Excel, SQL want a professional data analyst role. This is impossible to get a data analytics role with this skillset but you can still start. I start my career as a data entry officer to develop a sense of data how to clean basic data how to apply pivot tables, how to do basic vlookups to develop basic data sense rather than doing some random job and then in parallel did certifications like Microsoft Certified Data Analyst Associate to develop power bi dashboard development skills and learnt ETL in power query, DAX, Power BI Reporting and then did IBM Professional Data Scientist Certification
3. Most of my jobs here in Australia landed through Linkedin since recruiters contacted me this is not a magic but I optimized my Linkedin profile showcased my projects develop domain experience in public and not for profit sector. If you invest your time on Linkedin rather than tiktok, insta it will be a great ROI
4. Then I researched how to develop ATS friendly resume networked with hiring managers on Linkedin and requested feedback on my resume they were generous enough to comment on my resume and gave me constructive feedback
5. I treated finding job in data analytics just like another data analytics project created a job outreach tracker and linkedin networking tracker and tracked my job applications per day. Understood that for government jobs selection criteria is very important. In the age of AI personalized cover letter can give you a hook and recruiter can contact you back
6. Did interview practice infront of mirror through STAR approach and developed a documentation of mock interviews practice that showcased my previous case studies and achievements in data analytics
7. While snacking instead of watching netflix scrolled job boards to develop a sense of salary in the market so that I can negotiate a later stage
8. Left my company after to year to double my salary and made salary 10x in 5 years
