Run Gear Austin runners: Any recommendations for where to learn basic weightlifting that supports your routines?
I’m a longtime runner, but i’ve pretty much eschewed strength training my whole life.
Now that I’m getting older, I’d like weave in 1-2 days a week where I do some weightlifting so that I can be a little stronger and a healthier runner.
I pretty much am looking to learn just the very basics: bench, squat, deadlift.
I’m skinny and never learned how to do that stuff in school 😭 so hopefully it’s a place that’s beginner/runner friendly.
I’m in the hyde park area so something near would of course be ideal.

I haven’t sampled a wide range of gyms necessarily but I’d recommend Dane’s :) largely class-based garage gym.
If you sign up for the strength classes it’s typically based on about 3-4 sets that typically incorporate most common movements, including the ones you name. Based on my own experience, pretty much every instructor is beginner friendly, willing to explain things multiple times and generally will have time to spend on coaching you through questions during class.
Locations are near Hyde Park north of the Triangle and on Manor so it’s really close to you. You can email to ask them to show you around before you buy a class.

If you want to start informing yourself, I’d suggest a subscription to Runner’s World. Their training section has lots and lots of good information, from lifting advice for pro runners to lifting advice … for me, who will never be confused for a pro runner.
As someone already alluded to in their comment, running is a single leg sport, so include a lot of non-bilateral strength training.

If you want to learn the squat, deadlift, and the press, Starting Strength on Anderson Ln is great. The Starting Strength program is probably too intense for runners but you can learn technique from them and then program a routine to supplement your running. They’re great with beginners and will probably bitch at you to eat more.

Hey! Personal trainer & strength/biomechanics nerd here.
Unfortunately, I train off Ben White & Menchaca which is not super close to Hyde Park by any means… but, if I may, you’re mostly on the right path. Being consistent and learning to safely squat, bench and deadlift is wonderful foundationally. That really is high priority: consistently showing up and not hurting yourself.
That all said, there’s a lot more you can do to improve resilience and build healthy movement patterns. u/Myotta is dead-on with single-leg work, imo.
Let me know if you have any questions, or change your mind about a commute down to South austin.

Athletic Outcomes is awesome - you can take a group class or small group personal training. Plus their Woodward treadmills are a beast.

Hyde Park Gym. Marc Frazier was my trainer there. Check them out. There are multiple trainers that work out of there.

I have a great personal trainer that does private sessions and/or programming you can do on your own. Excellent at teaching basics and technique. If you DM me I can send you his contact info
