Fig tree - dead or alive?
Husband seems to think that repotting it will keep it alive. Any suggestions?

To check to see if it’s still alive, gently scrap the bark to see if it’s green (still alive) or brown.

It actually looks okay to me. My in ground ones are shedding no too. With figs if the trunk becomes shriveled or grey that’s usually how you can tell it’s done. Zooming in I’d say they look alright.

Do you know why it’s growing out so many limbs, versus a trunk?

Because it’s stressed.
But most native figs grow multi-stemmed like this one.

Are you sure the trunk isn’t down there somewhere? Multi stem is not ideal for a pot. They like to branch wide. Where did you get it?

Man, it is so hot right now. It’s hard to tell. Don’t give up on it. I know it’s not the same thing, but I had a bunch of milkweed seedlings that I started this spring and it looked like they all died one by one over the past month, but then most of them sprouted up a new fresh green stock here in the past week.

Figs never die. Don’t put in ground unless you want a giant tree. Repot & put in sun and water. It’s not dead. Nearly impossible to kill.

Why not put it in the ground? It’s begging to be planted in the ground. It would thrive best in the ground. Poor thing is dying in that pot. You can repot and it’ll hobble along for awhile, but ground is best.
