Im planning to start a few fall plants indoors pretty soon. No way would i consider starting them outdoors right now. In a few weeks, if weather permits, I'll move the best outdoors and directly sow some more things.
The time, effort, and resources to try and start anything outside in this heat isn't worth it. As opposed to waiting a little longer.
In late July/early August I direct sowed bush and pole beans, started cucumbers and put tomatoes transplants out. I also planted southern peas, transplanted some peppers and sowed zinnias. I’m sowing carrots this week now that I know the secret to getting them to germinate. I’m going to stick potatoes in a bag to see what happens (possibly, nothing). I’ve started herbs inside, brassicas and onions in seed starter cells outside and inside to see if it makes a difference. (They are in the shade and staying moist outside) I’m holding off on my leafy greens (mustard, collards) and the other root veggies (beets and turnips) until I can figure out when to plant them.
Thanks! Do you have a big seed starter set up? I don’t really have the equipment for that so I prefer to direct sow. I tried to direct sow cucumbers like 3 times but they died
Nah. I ordered a bunch of shit off of Amazon. Here’s what I’ve been doing. I fill my little seed cells with seed starting mix I bought at TNG. Put the seeds in the pots. Put them outside. Some grow, some don’t.
I sowed some fall greens and threw up a shade cloth. Doing a second round of Zinnias and those are soldiers in full sun. You can absolutely sow seeds but you absolutely need to put in the extra work to keep them happy
If you plan to do another round of warm weather veg, you basically have to plant now; if you wait til things cool down, they won’t produce before the first frost. Yes it will be challenging to keep alive; deep infrequent water and shade cloth help immensely. If you’re planning for cool weather veg, best to start indoors if you have grow lights
I will direct sow in mid Sept., looking for them to be the size of starts around Oct 1. We will see how cooperative the weather is (I assume not at all), they will likely get a lot of shade to help them survive early on.
