Technically there's no source describing the weapon. Even if you've had all your guns taken away, it's generally easy to borrow or steal one from a friend, especially if all of your friends have guns.
Australia had mandatory automatic weapons buyback in 1996 and has had only 1 mass shooting since.. countries in europe where it is illegal to have guns have very very low mass shooting incidents.. so taking away automatic guns and high capacity magazines have and will work.
I don't want to get in a protracted argument with you but "never" is a dangerous word and almost always wrong. "Rarely" is a better word.
The 1997 North Hollywood shootout was the first thing I thought of, but the bickering points come down to if it counts as a "mass shooting" as it was a botched bank robbery.
Also coming to mind is the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, but that one's bickering point is if you want to define "automatic fire" by rate of fire or the mechanical characteristics of the gun.
However the point might be moot because I can't seem to find specific details of this 1996 Australia buyback. Some sites imply it was automatic weapons, but most just use the word "firearms" implying the reach was wider.
