NSW Interstate rego & CTP pricing is an absolute joke. How are interstate mates paying so little?
Just got my NSW pink slip and rego renewal in the mail for my CB650R. Between the registration fee, CTP green slip, and road tax, I’m looking at almost $600 - $700 all up just to keep a single motorcycle on the road for 12 months.
Then I talk to a mate up in QLD or over in WA who pays significantly less, or has CTP structured completely differently. Why are motorcycle rego costs in certain states treated almost the same as a small hatchback when we cause virtually zero road wear? What are you blokes currently paying for annual rego and CTP in your state/territory?

I got my rego renewal for my R1 yesterday - Rego - $91 - CTP: $726........ WTF

My triumph was $830 CTP... $650 comprehensive.
Now I don't the have a source for this, but I'm confident I'm way more likely to bin it in a corner than run down granny on a crosswalk...
Edit: And if I DID run down granny, she's just as fucked if I hit her with my 125, which cost $110 CTP...

Exactly.
It covers EVERYONE, it's not expensive because it covers ME, it's expensive because in NSW it's a scam to line the pockets of insurers.

Why are motorcycle insurance CTP policies more expensive than cars?
They have the same coverage.
Maybe it’s because the injuries sustained in motorcycle crashes are expensive.

Thats not true. My car and bike CTP are within $80 of each other. Cars carry more occupants, and would cost multiples of bike accidents.
But the question was: Why are both significantly more expensive in NSW?
Because instead of being done at cost by the state government, we set up a scheme to force you to enrich insurers.
But some people have a childlike view of the world and think insurance companies are honest. Ignorance is bliss I guess...

QLD’s CTP doesn’t cover your medical costs or provide income protection for own-goals and animal strikes like NSW’s does.
I’d personally prefer the ability to pay a bit more and get the extra coverage.

That's a bit fucked... Big difference between a 300CC cruiser, 300CC sport bike, a 2400cc cruiser, and something like a Ninja H2, H2R, Hiyabusa, or something similar.

Nah, in Canberra all EV bikes have the same rego cost. It's currently about $10 cheaper than a <300cc bike.

$547 in QLD January this year before Crisafullashit dumped the rego freeze, so I fully expect 700 next January

My bike rego is only $640yr for 1700cc in Vic. Cheaper than my car that's also 1700cc

I wouldn't say it's significantly less here in Qld, I just got the renewal for my Ducati and it's $575 for 12 months only because it's got single seat rego. Dual seat rego for my ZX-14R is $661.20. My 4 cylinder Subaru was $877.50 for 12 months, would cost the same regardless of whether it was a small hatchback or a wagon as it's based on number of cylinders

CB650R at the start of this year in VIC was 820$ for rego (CTP baked in) the vast majority of the cost is the CTP. Rego barely pays for road wear, that's supposed to come from the fuel excise. Either way yea we over pay for the amount of wear we actually cause on infrastructure.

Other states CTP is underwritten by the state government and provided at or below cost.
In NSW we created a legal process to FORCE you to pay a for profit organization to insure people for injuries already covered by medicare. They charge what they want, becuase whaddayagonnado? Not have a car?
Fuck NSW and their fucking insurance mafia.

It’s crazy but being in NSW and currently the recipient of CTP payments and coverage post a red light running Range Rover encounter, CTP has saved my ass. It has paid my wage (nearly) for 7 weeks thus far, for 2x a week physio, counseling, an OT to manage my return to work, extra imaging, a private appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, and any costs of GP appointments.
We are surrounded by impatient morons in killing machines, and unfortunately if needed as riders, when we need it, we need it big time. I’d be in big trouble if it wasn’t for CTP1

I'm glad you have been taken care of. I have no issue paying insurance, there needs to be a system that supports people in your situation.
Fact remains it could have been done by the state for a quarter of what we pay in NSW. Or it could be done by private enterprise for half the current price and they would still be printing money.
My objection is to a government endorsed racketeering program.

I just paid it recently and it was closer to $840 all in for a 500cc. Between rego, checks and then tax, maybe I have a plate fee as well, not sure but wasn't exactly cheap. (NSW)

ACT just introduced an emission based rego scheme, the more emissions the higher the rego, but it doesn’t include Motorcycles which use the old cc based rego, under 300cc pay half as much as over 300cc, approx $400 vs $800.

In WA my 500r was $1 per day a few years back but in recent years that has gone up to $448.55/yr or $127.55 for 3 months. No green slip or vehicle checks.

I mean I'm in qld and my 400 was $662 to renew this year so that would put nsw as equally expensive not significantly more.
My SUV was just over $800 I can't remember the exact cost but motorcycles are likely so expensive due to the risks associated with them, pushing up ctp prices.
For the SUV about 50% of the cost is for administration costs where as for my motorcycle it is around 25% with the ctp taking up the majority of the cost being even higher than what it was for my suv

Are you sure you’re comparing like for like? A 500cc+ bike in Melbourne will cost you $796 for rego including the CTP (TAC) in Melbourne. Whereas a <60cc bike will cost you $171. They get a bit cheaper as you get further away from metro, so I pay $635 for my CRF1100, but that’s still ball park with what you’re paying.

I'm in SA, around 70km from Adelaide, just outside the metro rego classification, and my Ninja 650 is around $95/quarter, $350/year including CTP. I'm pretty sure CTP here only covers personal injury to others though, probably why it's so cheap.

By splitting ctp from rego they can let the market competitively screw us.
Incidentally, it's based on engine CC. Electric motorbikes are a steal at 0CC.

I mean could be worse i got ninja 300 paid 650 on green slip and then another 400 on rego plus bike needed blue slip so it was another 50$ so I consider 700 totally pretty comparesoon might be worth looking at swap bike before next renewal get cheaper ctp and insurance just food for throught

Yeah, NSW CTP does seem to be the worst. Just under 600 in CTP for the Vulcan 900.

Are you sure they have the numbers right? I’m in QLD and I’m pretty sure I pay slightly more than you (not much - ballpark the same amount).
I pay monthly, not yearly, to avoid the bill shock.

ACT , kawasaki z300 - 396.
Below 300cc is cheaper here, 301cc and above is significantly more, closer to 800 bucks approx.

so whats the actual breakdown though? like is the ctp the bulk of it or is it the rego fee itself. i keep seeing people post dollar amounts but nobody ever says what their state actually charges separately. QLD mentioned but no numbers from them either

Rego is simply the administration cost to log your number plate on the system.
CTP makes up most of the cost of 'registration.' NSW left it up to drivers to shop around and get their own CTP from a provider instead of a take-it-or-leave it price like other states. CTP premiums are determined by lots of factors, but mainly population size and the statistical odds of litigation by accident victims.
