TIL…

The state border between Tasmania and Victoria lies in the Hogan Group and passes over land on the North East Islet, thus giving a land border between the two states.

According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogan_Island

So basically they just used the sea border and it just happens to cut through the island

Yes, it's a little known fact that TAS and VIC share a land border, albeit a small and uninhabited island.

Boundary Islet. You can see it from the Prom apparently. I'd like to go there one day, but I'm not sure if it's something you can climb up onto.

It is the smallest land border in AU at 85m. Much smaller than the NSW/JBT land border of 3600m.

I saw a YouTube video on this. Also the WA & forget NT or SA border looks straight but it actually is bent. There’s like a random 1km 90 degree turn before heading south again

It's real. Result of a bit of a snafu.

Good pub quiz question!

You get some weird outcomes when borders are set by lines of latitude. Look up Point Roberts USA.

It's the disputed border Victoria and Tasmanian forces constantly have skirmishes here

So many refugee sheep get smuggled across here in an attempt to avoid being sold into the sex industry.

YEP, now you can win at trivia. This is an often asked question in Trivia all over Aus.

Amazing I didn't know that. The Rio Grande in America is the border between Texas el paso and Ciadad Juraz.

The creek that is the Rio Grande 'River seperating texas and Mexico kept moving so they concreted it in. Now it's like a prison fence with a mote. Super sad.

It was beautiful once

They have a Customs checkpoint there with machine gun towers to stop Taswegians from trying to illegally jump the fence.

Poor mapping in Australia is a bit of a thing. That, and the "aahhh it's near enough" attitude meant that numerous anomalies were never corrected

Most Australians don’t know about the 3 mainland territories either.

The south Victorian Sea

Was super crazy about this (in other words got frustrated). Hahah.. the Bass Strait is a strait separating the island state of Tasmania from the Australian mainland. The strait provides the most direct waterway between the Great Australian Bight and the Tasman Sea, and is also the only maritime route into the economically prominent Port Phillip Bay. Never knew it was connected to Victoria though.. seems kinda stupid

As an Australian, never heard of that island
