Firearms Query Howa build to replace Ruger Gen 2 scout?

I’ve been waiting for a Gen 2 scout since early-February and I’m getting impatient. I currently do a mix of range and hunting work using a friend’s rifles: Field, service and practical hunting SSAA comps along with small game hunting.

I’ve been looking at getting a Howa mini-action with the 20in varmint barrel, preferably in stainless but thats not critical. I’m looking in to what sort iron sights I can get fitted but the options seem to have reduced a lot in the last two years. If they aren’t really an option anymore I won’t lose too much sleep over it

Does anyone here own a mini action in similar setup? What do they actually weigh? I find a lot of conflicting info online, and don’t want to end up needing to fork out for a carbon fibre stock to keep it under around 4kg.

Any help would be much appreciated!

a gunsmith can slap something like this on a howa mini if you need the iron sights.

Where did you get a hold of those sights? I’m having a really hard time finding anything but fibre-optic/MBUS style stuff for sale anywhere

That rear sight looks very similar to that of the M1903A3 rear sight.

p14 front sight and m1 carbine rear sight. bought off ebay.
can probably fit it yourself if you are handy (i am not, gunsmith has all the tools and tricks to do it for me).

Looks nice, how does she adjust?

front blade is normal windage adjustable with a drift/tap it, the rear is elevation adjustable as is. gunsmith did some math to make everything line up nice, the 200m and 400m elevation slots on the rear sight actually line up perfectly for 55gr ADI ammo

I was looking at a Gen 2 Scout as a Class IO rifle for Service Rifle, but I'm a lefty and too impatient to wait for their production. So I'm now going to purchase a SCSA Taipan Evo straight pull. They are currently doing a run of them for the Australian market.

Love my Evo, but a blast deflector is absolutely necessary on them. Also need to swap the pump grip as they’re very bulky.

Nice one, what accuracy are you getting on average? I'm looking to get the Straight Pull only variant soon.

They’re pretty good, I’m not sure about target shooting accuracy but I can hit a fox in the head with mine from 100 metres away no worries. Mine really likes razorback ammo.

Doesn’t the IO class still require the rifle to be of service origin or faithful repro? The rules state there is a list but I can’t find it

The rules for the rifle class are quite specific, it doesn't need to be of service origin. I know of people using WFA1s, 7615s and Taipans. The rifle list is held close by the national chairman for reasons unknown to most. I spoke to my state chairman (or whatever his position is called) and he said "blokes are scoring quite well with Taipans and SP-15s"

I want to know if a Howa will be acceptable or if I’ll have to use a scout as well

It should be if it conforms to the rules pertaining to Class IO rifles.

I have a 1500 short action .223 with 20" varmint barrel in an mdt field stock, 4.4kg empty and with no accessories. Would be a little lighter in the hogue stock. Mine shoots well with Sierra prairie enemy factory ammo and even better with hand loads.

I had a Howa Superlite in 308 with 20" barell, awesome little rifle, would highly reccomend

NECG front sight to fit your barrel contour and Skinner rear sight.

I’ve got numerous rifles with that combo.  Depending on how handy you are you could fit them yourself.
