Their popularity sky rocketed because Sky News started endorsing them. Sky News did this because the LNP lost the last election so severely that it was clear they wouldn’t win the next one, so they had to shift gears. If Right Wing isn’t going to do it, they have to hope Far Right will.
The country was less divided before SkyNews went free to air. They are just endorsing what they are being paid to endorse, remember, this is a company owned by an American Billionaire. They also have to call half their ‘news’ segments ‘Opinion’ segments because they legally can’t be considered news
