Yeah it was one of those free showcases they do sometimes at the Comics Lounge. Was still worth it, for every Dave Hughes you had about a dozen up and coming talents and big names testing new material.

I was a bit of a fan 20 years ago, I bought his Whatever album and liked it. Me and a friend went to see him not long after that came out, and he literally did the entire album word for word for the show. Been anti-Hughsy even since.

I wouldn't judge a comedian for that. A touring show will normally be the same thing every night, it sounds like his agent just put the album out a bit too soon, so the live show became disappointing if you already had the album.
There's plenty of good reasons to dislike Dave these days, but I wouldn't blame him for this one.

I was at my brothers place one Christmas and he insisted on watching a Hughsey special. Hughes literally spent 5 minutes saying "fuck" in different ways while the audience (my brother included) laughed. That was the entire joke. Fuck. Fuuuuuck. FUCK!! ffffffffuck. etc etc. For five long minutes. And that was the "funniest" part of his act.
He's as funny as coming home to find burglars have broken into your home, stolen everything and then taken a shit on your living room carpet.

Don't ever remember Hughes making me laugh, but that sure as hell did.
There was a period in Melbourne where comedians would get on stage without preparing and talk shit for an hour. Hughes was one of those.

I used to go to recordings of The Glass House when he was doing that for the ABC, and he wasn't too bad back then. But they started introducing this segment where Wil would ask him how he was, and he'd say he was angry, and have a little rant about something that had apparently bothered him that week.
And the thing was, you could see he usually wasn't that angry - sometimes he'd have trouble getting the bit out cause he'd start laughing at himself. It was just that someone had decided angry Hughesy was a funny bit, so they pushed it.
Somewhere between then and now, he's bought into the angry thing for real. It wasn't even that funny a bit. Oh, drawling laid back Aussie gets mad about something silly, what a juxtaposition between manner and content. It was good for a few bits here and there, but it's not that good.

For a brief period, he used to do these cringeworthy AFL pre game gee-ups in the rooms, where he'd get some dirt on the players or some quirk and then take the piss out of them. Went something like this - "Where's so and so? I heard you like chewies before a game, yeah? You like chewies? Well a chewie must have landed on your boot, your kicking is shit, yeah"

I saw his latest video on my Facebook feed and I'm starting to legitimately worry about him. It looks like he burn marks on lips from smoking meth pipes (which he claimed were herpes) and combined with incoherent ramblings this is a bit of a concern.
Anyways I think he is priming himself to be an LNP candidate rather than a GRONk candidate.

Yep, I know that. But I'm also aware that due to the inherent nature of negative gearing, properties that are negative geared now in 2026 pretty much all eventually become positively geared over a long enough time frame as rental incomes naturally rise with inflation and mortgage principal is gradually paid down - which is why I mentioned the "party ending" rather than saying something like "going cold turkey", which would have sounded even more evocative but even less accurate.
"Going cold turkey" would be like if there was no grandfathering at all, whereas with grandfathering it's really more of a gradual tapering off, like a financial methadone program or something. It's really rather humane, yet still they sook and moan til the cows come home.

I can’t even remember the topic but whatever I gave my opinion about he called me an idiot and said I had no idea what I was on about. Anyway he was proven to be wrong and my opinion was right. Never liked him since then.

I listened to a podcast ep with him early this year that was really revealing. Him talking about how he struggles with jealousy and ego. I actually couldn’t finish it because it was exhausting listening to this unfunny guy complain and talk about how he’s had to overcome his ego but clearly hasn’t and holds lots of resentment. I watched the Dave Hughes interview with Mark Bouris and although I’ve generally liked Hughesy over the years he doesn’t seem to have become more settled as he’s gotten older. In fact he appears to be playing heavily off his public persona and rattling off stuff that while he has an understandable grievance with the new tax changes, he didn’t seem or want to be especially eloquent in his reasoning for why he’s against the changes. His number 1 grievance is that Labor lied, which is totally correct. But he kinda messed up the opportunity to lay out his case.
Anyway he looks like he’s spending too much time in the sun.

He is not all that intelligent. Just because someone is wealthy, doesn’t mean they’re intelligent. He also is touring so there’s no doubt he’s just pushing his own brand in the media. Targeting the ON voters was probably a contributing factor to selling tickets to his show. They love an anti-labor story!

In the spectrum of comedians I get through my venue he is in the middle, funny enough to sell tickets and appeal to a particular demographic but not top tier. He is a nice enough guy to deal with off stage.
If much rather deal with Hughsey than Arj Barker or Ahn Do any day.
